While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose.

In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Stop World Hunger Presents Upcoming Events Over the past 39 years, Stop World Hunger Inc. has forwarded $136,110.65 to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest”, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. In addition, they collect food for our hungry neighbors on Long Island.

A special Tennis & Pickleball party will take place at Carefree Racquet

Club in North Merrick on March 21, 2020. The party will run from 8PMMidnight and admission is $20/players and $7.50/ non-players. Players will be guaranteed two hours of playing time (doubles) and refreshments will be available.

Also, applications are now available for their annual Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Tournament. This consists of singles for men, women and seniors (60+), as well as doubles for men, women and mixed teams. The cost

Nassau County Police Department POP (problemoriented policing) Officers Steven Russell and Thomas Lively along with Dr. Mary Koslap-Petraco, were presented recognition awards at MTAC’s recent Steering Committee meeting.

POP Officers Russell and Lively were acknowledged for their support of MTAC’s Secure

Monitor Dispose Campaign and outreach to inform the community to Secure Monitor and Dispose of unnecessary medications in the home. Dr. KoslapPetraco was recognized for her efforts in educating healthcare providers and patients to determine how and when opioids should be prescribed for chronic pain.

Since 1997, Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) has been Massapequas’ community coalition to prevent substance misuse among youth. MTAC has been recognized as one of

our nation’s leaders in mobilizing communities to prevent youth substance use and was awarded the prestigious Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program Grant by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in the Executive Office of the President of the United States. YES Community Counseling Center is the fiscal agent for MTAC’s DFC Grant which provides funding to community coalitions to strengthen infrastructure among local partners to create and sustain a reduction in youth substance use.

Berner Geography Bee Winner Berner Middle School Geography Bee champion Ken Zheng, an eighth grader, has qualified for the New York State National Geographic Geography Bee. He will take an online exam on March 27.

The deadline to challenge the assessment on your home was recently extended to Thursday, April 2nd. The free workshops will be held on: • Tuesday, March 24th at 7pm at Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. This seminar is offered in partnership with County Legislator Josh Lafazan and the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission. • Wednesday, March 25th at 2pm at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 W. Carl Street in Hicksville.

County Legislator Rose Walker and Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll. The workshop is open to residents from both the towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay. “While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as homeowner to challenge your assessment.

Remember, your assessment can only be lowered as the result of a challenge – it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,� said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees with the assessed value of your property, I invite you to attend one of these Property Tax Assessment Workshops, as the property tax grievance deadline of April 2nd is approaching.�

In January 2020, Nassau County notified residents of their home’s new

tentative assessed value for the 2021/2022 school tax period and the 2022 general tax period. Any residents who did not receive the notice may view it online at www.mynassauproperty. com or contact their local County legislator.

At the workshops, an assessment expert will answer questions and show residents how to use online tools to file an “Application for Correction of Assessment� online or via mail. There is no requirement to pay a law firm or agency to file a grievance.
