Maier Urges Residents To Donate Blood As National Shortage

Impacts Hospitals Residents Encouraged To Donate Blood On March 28th At Hicksville Athletic Center

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, March 28th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Councilwoman Maier stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though

a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

500 For 500 Writing Competition Announces Four

Councilwoman Maier added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back, to help ease the burden of our Healthcare Heroes as they continue to provide lifesaving efforts.” For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town’s Public Information Office at (516) 624-6380. Durso Rallies With Highway Crews For Local Street And Highway Funding

Assemblyman Michael Durso (R-Massapequa Park) joined highway crew members and highway superintendents from all corners of the state for a rally in Albany to increase funding in this year’s budget to repair and repave local streets, highways and culverts. The rally focused on funding for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS), which Gov. Hochul refused to increase in her executive budget proposal.

“As a former sanitation worker and municipal employee, I’ve seen how hard our highway crews work, day and night, to keep up with the endless potholes and terrible conditions of our local streets. They’re doing their part and Albany needs to step up and do theirs,”

Durso said.

The New York State Association of County Highway Superintendents and New York State Association of Town Superintendents of Highways, Inc. recently launched a ‘Local Roads are Essential’ advocacy campaign which coincides with today’s effort by legislators.

“Our taxes are sky high and settling for deficient bridges and cracked highways is unacceptable. Our families deserve peace of mind commuting to work and our businesses need dependable infrastructure when transporting their goods to market. I am calling on Gov. Hochul and leaders in both houses to join us and increase CHIPS funding in this year’s budget,” Durso concluded.

Special Olympics New York And Jersey Mike’s Team Up For Second Consecutive Day Of Giving On March 29th

Special Olympics New York is pleased to announce that 41 Jersey Mike’s Subs locations around the state will participate in the Day and Month of Giving campaigns for the second consecutive year.

During March, customers can donate to Special Olympics NY at participating Jersey Mike’s restaurants. The campaign culminates with a Day of Giving on Wednesday, March 29, when local Jersey Mike’s restaurants will give 100 percent of the day’s sales to the athletes of Special Olympics NY.

“I would like to extend a personal invitation to you and your family to visit Jersey Mike’s Subs throughout the month of

March, and especially on Day of Giving when 100 percent of sales – every penny – goes to help a great local cause,” said Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike’s founder and CEO.

“Jersey Mike’s is a true champion of champions. Every dollar donated during the Month of Giving – and every dollar spent at partner locations March 29 – will help change lives for people with intellectual differences,” said Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman. “Our athletes, families, and supporters look forward to celebrating inclusion with Jersey Mike’s all month long.”

Residents who love visiting the beach and want to help protect the shoreline can join Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board at the Towns’ annual Dune Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 25th at TOBAY Beach. The event begins at 10 a.m. by the dunes at TOBAY.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Dune Stabilization Project brings together residents of all ages in an effort to protect and preserve our beautiful shoreline and environment by planting stalks of dune grass. Dunes along our south shore continue to face environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the

beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds.”

The Dune Stabilization Project helps preserve our beach and barrier island for future generations. Volunteers work alongside Town officials and crews, as well as residents from across the Town who share an interest in helping preserve TOBAY Beach.

To register as a volunteer, residents can visit www.oysterbaytown. com/volunteerform. For additional information, contact the Department of Environmental Resources at (516) 677-5943 or email environmental@oysterbayny.gov.

These centers help train employees to meet the needs of the private sector, connecting qualified job seekers with employers, and by assisting applicants in accessing job

opportunities. The Centers offer Resource Rooms, which are equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, complete with Microsoft software and internet access. Additionally, these Centers offer residents access to job listings, resource materials, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones. The Centers provide employability and computer workshops, as well as career counselors who will guide residents through their job search. Computer workshops are taught on-site in modern computer labs. Residents can increase their marketability by updating or acquiring new computer skills at the Centers.

Fourth graders in Susan Crimarco’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are undoubtedly stronger readers after a monthlong competition.

Students participated in an iReady reading contest and the goal was for each child to pass at least 20 lessons in the digital

assessment tool. Teachers use iReady to determine a student’s reading needs, create a personalized instructional plan and monitor progress.

The competition in Ms. Crimarco’s class got pretty serious. When it was over, students collectively passed 1,301 lessons, well more than 20 per reader. The top

reader in the class passed 156 lessons, and everyone advanced multiple reading levels.

For their efforts, the class earned a week of no homework and the top five readers got a lunch of their choice with Ms. Crimarco. She said that next up will be an iReady math competition.

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine Companions

is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment. With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

the fulfillment of their lives through these dogs. The service dogs are not just partners, they are their right hand, their left hand, their legs and more. We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.”

Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities.

Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.

Looking to make a di erence? You can become a Puppy Raiser with the Long Island Chapter today. Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love. Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

NYS Assemblyman Durso, Nassau County Executive Blakeman & Massapequa Park Mayor Pearl Host A

(Narcan) Training

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso in partnership with Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Village of Massapequa Park Mayor Dan Pearl recently hosted a Free Naloxone (Narcan) Training at Massapequa Park Village Hall.

The training was provided by Calle Panakos, Coordinator of Education & Training at Nassau County Office of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency and Developmental Disabilities Services. The program educates participants of overdose risk factors, recognizing and responding to an overdose, and administration of Naloxone (Narcan), the lifesaving antidote that can reverse the fatal effects of an Opioid overdose and save a person’s life.

“Narcan training programs are an essential part of our effort to combat the increase in fentanyl and opioid overdoses and deaths that are plaguing communities throughout Long Island and New York State,” said Durso. “I want to thank all the residents for attending this life-saving training. And a special thank you to Calle Panakos for providing our communities with this vital service.”

If you, or someone you know, are struggling with a mental health or substance use disorder, please call the 24 hour a day, seven day a week Mental Health Substance Abuse Helpline, (516) 227-TALK.

March 2023

Spring is almost here. January seemed like it had 49 days in it, and February went by pretty fast, and now we are in March. St Paddy’s Day will be here soon, Lacrosse and Baseball have already started, and we had our snowfall for the last days of February. Before you know it, we will have the Chamber’s Community Street Festival, and it will be summer.

Many big events are happening this spring. The Chamber will be participating in two fundraising walks at Marjorie Post Park - one for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the other for the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center. These will be great events for you to showcase your business and help some worthwhile causes. We will also be sponsoring a Taste of the Town event with local restaurants (and we have some of the best right here in the Massapequas!) This will serve as a fundraiser for the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra. The Chamber and many of our members are also sponsoring a free lifejacket giveaway for children at John J. Burns Park. I want to take this time to highlight that this is the 75th year of the Chamber of Commerce of the Massapequas. Because of the great leadership that I have followed, and the teamwork of our Chamber members and Board, we have not only survived 75 years - including the COVID shutdown - but we have thrived and exceeded over 250 members. In this 75th year and beyond, we will continue to provide rst-class education to local businesses, networking opportunities to meet potential referral partners, and ways for you to show off your business to the public.

This milestone wouldn’t have happened without the continued dedication of our Past Presidents - many of whom have stayed on our Board to ensure that their passion for giving back to the community and helping fellow business owners continues. Our Past Presidents who are still active on the Board include Robert R. Barrett, Denis Monette, Gary Slavin, Anthony Ventiera, Keith Wilson - and the unstoppable Patricia Orzano.

Patty is the heart and soul of the Chamber. For those of you who don’t know Patty, she owned the 7-Eleven on Merrick Road in Massapequa for over 30 years with her late husband Richard. She is our historian, chief fundraiser, and the Chamber mom. Patty makes sure that the Chamber stays true to our mission, gives back to the community, and keeps our traditions alive while we adapt to the modern world.

It is people like Patty who keep our community looking nice, with the many beauti cation projects that she helps lead as part of her many roles in our Chamber. The banners that you see on the telephone poles throughout Massapequa were her idea, and she has maintained them over the years, and takes responsibility for the fundraising to make sure they are in good condition and then changed out for the holiday season.

Every year, Patty leads a dedicated team of volunteers to make sure our Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony is funded. She also heads up the Toys for Tots Drive which is one of the largest on Long Island in cooperation with the 7-Eleven franchisees and company. Patty was named the Grand Marshal of the 2022 Massapequa Street Festival based on her outstanding contributions to this community, and the countless hours she volunteers to the Chamber and other organizations because of her love for the Massapequas. This message is dedicated to her, as she continues to ght her battle with cancer, while still doing all of these things mentioned above. We are always looking for more people to help with any of these projects, and you don’t have to be a Board Member to serve. The reward of giving back to the community will be very ful lling, and if Patty can do all of this while she is ghting the battle of her life - I hope we can get a few people to give up a few hours of their month to give her a hand.

Enjoy Corned Beef And Cabbage This St. Patrick’s Day

Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal. March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Serves 6 to 8

Cook a whole brisket with both sections together with all its fat. (You can trim off the fat after the meat is cooked.) Whole brisket and second-cut corned beef brisket are hard to find, but your supermarket should have first-cut corned beef vacuumpacked in plastic. Choose the fattiest piece in the case and treat it gently.

You can cook the cabbage and potatoes in the same water as the corned beef. Because the other vegetables need to be cooked in water that simmers more than the meat, scoop out water from the corned beef pot and cook the vegetables in a separate pot or pots.

1 4- to 5-pound corned beef brisket

1 teaspoon pickling spices

1 head cabbage

2 pounds boiling potatoes

6 to 8 small carrots (optional)

Parsnips (optional)

Turnips (optional)

Directions:

Place the corned beef in a pot that holds at least 5 quarts of water. Cover completely with cold water. Place over high heat and bring to a simmer.

As soon as bubbles start to break on the surface of the water, adjust the heat so the water simmers very, very gently. With a slotted spoon, skim off the residue that accumulates on the surface. When the residue stops coming to the surface, add the pickling spices.

Continue to cook, with bubbles just gently breaking on the surface, for 3 to 4 hours, until fork tender.

The meat can be safely held in its water for about 2 hours; reheat gently.

and cabbage, even though the dish may have little to do with Ireland (and even less to do with St. Patrick). The precise origins of the link between corned beef and St. Patrick’s Day remain a topic of debate, but some historians say the corned beef enjoyed today can be traced to New York City’s Irish immigrant population in the 19th and 20th centuries, who popularized salted meat made from brisket that was then sold by

Jewish butchers.

Regardless of the authenticity of its link to Ireland, corned beef is delicious, and many modern Paddy’s Day celebrants wouldn’t think of going without it on March 17. Those who want to cook up their own can try this recipe for “Corned Beef and Cabbage” from Arthur Schwartz’s “New York City Food” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang).

Cook the vegetables until fork tender in separate pots of boiling fresh water or especially for the cabbage, use some of the water in which the corned beef was cooked.

Slice the corned beef and serve with mustard and/or horseradish on a platter, surrounded with some of the vegetables or with vegetables in a separate bowl.

Stop & Shop Kicks Off 22nd Annual

‘Help Cure Childhood Cancer’ Campaign

Stop & Shop kicks off its annual ‘Help Cure Childhood Cancer’ campaign. Through April 2, Stop & Shop customers in the tri-state area will be able to support MSK Kids, the pediatric program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). The annual fundraiser, which celebrates its 22nd anniversary this year, raises money to support pediatric cancer care, treatment, and research. Stop & Shop has donated more than $28 million to MSK Kids since the partnership began more than two decades ago. It has supported numerous initiatives not only impacting children and families treated at MSK Kids, but also across the globe through development of cellbased therapies and other innovative, life-saving treatments.

Stop & Shop’s Help Cure Childhood Cancer campaign will run in all New York, New Jersey and Southern Connecticut stores and shoppers can donate at checkout by rounding up their total to the nearest dollar or by donating an additional $1, $3, or $5, with 100% of proceeds benefiting MSK Kids.

“Every year, we look forward to our customers’ and associates’ participation in helping us raise funds for pediatric cancer research and care,”

said Stop & Shop President, Gordon Reid. “Helping in the fight against pediatric cancer is a key pillar of giving for Stop & Shop, and we take immense pride in supporting the life changing work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.”

One of the most recognizable aspects of the campaign is the in-store signage that highlights patient ambassadors - local children ages 3-15 who are being or have been treated at MSK Kids and have benefited from donations

from companies like Stop & Shop.

The year’s ambassadors are seven-year-old Madison of Cortlandt Manor, NY, and nine-year-old Freja of Fair Haven, NJ.

MSK Kids is dedicated to all children, young adults, and families facing childhood cancer. With specialized expertise and care focused on the individual child, more families turn to MSK Kids for cancer care than any other hospital in the United

New York Blood Center Declares First Blood Emergency Of 2023 Bad Weather, Cold And Flu Season And More Are Causing A Drop In Blood Donations

New York Blood Center (NYBC) declared the first blood emergency of 2023. The blood emergency is due to several evolving factors, including recent poor weather, school breaks and cold and flu season. Last month, NYBC and its divisions across the nation received 6,000 fewer blood donations than the year prior and blood donations are 12% below hospital and patient needs. The number of blood donations still are not back to pre-pandemic

levels. Compounding the problem is a continued lag in first-time and youth donors, which remain about half of pre-pandemic levels. And while New Yorkers are returning to in-person work, office and community blood drives and visits to NYBC Donor Centers are significantly down. People working from home had an easier time donating in our donor centers, but we’re seeing a dramatic decrease at our centers.

“Each winter, we

struggle to get folks to donate blood and this year is no exception. We need more New Yorkers to make blood donations, host blood drives and spread the word about the need for donations,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Vice President at New York Blood Center. “Last year, we expanded our reach with a new donor center, and we recently announced new donor guidelines from the FDA; we are expanding

In addition to whole blood donors, platelet donors are urgently needed. With a shelf life of just 7 days, NYBC relies on dedicated platelet donors to help patients undergoing chemotherapy, those with bleeding disorders, new mothers, and more.

Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted eligibility restrictions for individuals who lived in Europe during certain periods of time. To view current eligibility guidelines, visit nybc. org or call 800.688.0900.
