The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life.

This organization has five service areas: Children & Youth, Family & Community, Senior & Nutrition Services, Vocational Services & Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice Services. Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they assist over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County.

EAC Network runs the New Path Treatment Center, which is an outpatient clinic located in Hempstead. The center offers a recovery process in a safe and full-service treatment program for individuals with substance abuse disorders.

Approximately 22.7 million Americans need treatment for drug or alcohol-related problems, and many will not seek treatment due to the stigma and shame associated with substance use disorders. The New Path Treatment Center is a place where trained and compassionate counselors work tirelessly to assist people in need. They address not only substance use itself, but all of its contributing factors, including mental health, physical health, family systems, socialization, smoking cessation, legal issues and employment. A personal treatment plan is developed for each individual to address their specific needs.

is possible and is a life-long journey, we can help to reduce the stigma of substance use and mental health disorders. Our role at New Path is to assist individuals to achieve and maintain their recovery goals. Our services follow a recovery model whereby participants are encouraged to develop their intrinsic motivation to make healthy lifestyle choices.”

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water, so no flooding can occur. ‘Give The Gift Of Life’ This Holiday Season By Donating Blood

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage this holiday season, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invite residents to give the gift of life by donating blood on Thursday, December 15th, from 1:00 p.m. to

7:00 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for

Winter 2023 Toddler Sports Program Online Registration Begins January 3rd

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that the Toddler Sports Program will return this winter, beginning on January 31st. This 6-week program offers sports classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center for children ages 3 and 4.

“The Town’s Toddler Sports Program is a fantastic way to teach your toddler the fundamentals of sports in a fun and social environment,” said Councilwoman Maier. “This program is sure to be a hit with children and parents alike, as youngsters are given the opportunity to learn the basics of various different sports such as teeball, flag football and more along with children their own age.”

The Toddler Sports Program begins on January 31st and is 6 weeks in duration. Residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one, six-week session per child. Classes will take place on: Tuesdays at 10am or 11am at the Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville; and Thursdays at 10am or 11am at the Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville.

Online Registration will begin on Tuesday, January 3rd at 9am through the Parks Department Portal available at oysterbaytown. com/parks. Residents

must create an account on this website to register their child and upload proof of residency and the child’s birth certificate. Registration will close when the program reaches full capacity. Space is limited- first come, first serve.

Each class is approximately 50 minutes. The cost of the program is $75 per child who is a Town resident, and $90 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. A guardian must be present during the class. The child MUST be 3 years old by the start of the program.

To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors

eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

Councilwoman Walsh added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all

of us to pitch in and give back during the holidays.”

Massapequa Students Excel In Fitness Challenge

The Massapequa High School physical education department was recognized as the topperforming participant in the New York Area United States Marine Corps Fitness Challenge. Activities were held during physical education classes in September and the school was recently presented with its

championship trophy.

During the challenge, students rotated through four fitness stations. Buddy carry with a partner, wheelbarrow-style relay race to half court and back, while the modified sprint and weighted carry relay was a 25-meter course in which team members individually sprinted down and back with weighted containers, tagging the next team member until everyone completed the race.

The cross functional fitness relay featured three activities including a bear crawl, pushups

and burpees. At the final station, teams competed to see how many pull-ups they could do and had a chance to win prizes such as water bottles and T-shirts.

The Marine Corps Challenge is sponsored by BrainBox Immersive Marketing. Representatives from the company, along with local Marines, led students through the activities, which foster teamwork, leadership and motivation. Massapequa students earned the best scores among participating schools and earned the title of New York’s Fittest High School.

Massapequa High School’s American Sign Language program has led many graduates to successful careers, and current students learned about the possibilities during an alumni panel.

A group of 11 graduates, who attended in person and virtually, spoke to sophomores, juniors and seniors in Melanie Smith’s and Patricia McCarthy’s ASL classes. The alumni

who spoke included current college students who are enrolled in sign language programs and those using it in various professions, including as an audiologist, interpreter, speech pathologist and teacher.

The alumni panel included graduates from 2004 to 2022. Ms. Smith and Ms. McCarthy said they were asked to share their experiences in working

with the deaf community.

Massapequa’s World Language department offers ASL to students beginning in ninth grade at the Ames Campus through college-level courses at the main campus. The alumni panel has been an annual tradition for more than 20 years to give students an insight into career possibilities and help them establish connections.

Free Musical Performances At Local Libraries

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Distinguished Artists Concert Series will continue through May 2023 with free performances at local libraries throughout the Town.

“The Distinguished Artists Concert Series provides free musical and dance programs for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Councilman Labriola. “I encourage residents to take advantage of these wonderful performances offered by the Town for free at local libraries.”

Residents Cautioned Not To Fall Victim To Ongoing Phone Scams

Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Michele Johnson cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone scams, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. These scams can be performed both by phone call or text message.

“Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “Many times, scammers pose

as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or other well-known agency, designed to intimidate the call recipient. Now, during the holiday season, scammers have been known to ask for immediate payment via gift card, claiming that victims owe backpay in taxes or other debts.”

The Councilwoman noted that many times, scammers’ return phone numbers can also be falsified to appear as a familiar number. In addition to seniors, others frequently

targeted include students and first-generation Americans. Current common scams include offers of debt relief, credit repairs or opportunity to share lottery earnings. Scammers have also been known to pose as family members allegedly in trouble and seeking money.

“The last thing families need, especially during these ongoing uncertain times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hard-earned money,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “We

Town And Marines Collect Over 30,000 Toys For Tots

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Tom Hand, Councilman Steve Labriola, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and Assemblyman Michael Durso joined the United States Marines Corp. in hosting Long Island’s largest ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive at John Burns Town Park in Massapequa on December 3rd and 4th. In total, the Town of Oyster Bay collected over 30,000 toys

for the less fortunate.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The 30,000 of toys collected at this ‘CruiseThru Holiday Toy Drive’ and by the Town of Oyster Bay will bring giant smiles to the faces of children this holiday season. I thank our residents for opening their hearts and wallets to generously give back to children in need during the holidays. This collection drive was the all-time largest single day collection on Long Island and demonstrated the love

The Federal Trade Commission offers the following tips to residents who fall victim to scam phone calls:

Hang up the phone. Don’t press numbers to speak to alive operator or take your number off the list, this just confirms your phone number.

Block any numbers from which you have received scam calls or texts.

Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world.
