It started with a parade, it ended with a football game, and throughout it all there was lots of spirit. Massapequa High School’s homecoming celebration on Oct. 8 was lively as students, staff and community members came

together to celebrate ’Pequa Pride.

The parade began near Massapequa Park Village Hall, and spectators lined Park Boulevard as marchers made their way south to the high school. A military

color guard led the parade, which also included board of education trustees and administrators, the high school marching band, cheerleaders, kickline team and students from the classes of 2023, 2024,

2025 and 2026 with their handmade, movie-themed banners.

Steadily, the bleachers filled up in anticipation of the football game, featuring the Massapequa Chiefs against the Oceanside Sailors. Senior Day festivities took place beforehand, as 12th grade members of the football, cheerleading and kickline times were honored at midfield with their parents.

As game time approached, the Massapequa Mustangs youth football team charged onto the field, with the Chiefs varsity field following right behind them under a blue and gold balloon arch. Once they were lined up on the home side of the field, junior Cooper Arbisi sang the national anthem, and

students from the American Sign Language program at the high school signed along.

The Chief Nation section was thunderous throughout the game, with students in their Massapequa gear cheering on their Chiefs, leading chants like “Let’s Go Pe-Qua” and banging their inflatable thundersticks.

Halftime festivities featured the marching band show, with music based on the “Halloween movies.” The musicians were accompanied by the Color Guard in a dynamic show that drew lots of cheers when they wrapped up with Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” That was followed by well-choreographed performances from the cheerleaders and Chiefettes

kickline team.

Principal Tania Willman introduced the class courts and senior homecoming royalty. Students voted on classmates they considered the best representatives of their class, their school and the Massapequa community. The class courts featured freshmen Nicholas Brennan and Kyra Florio-Marinello, sophomores Gabriel Gomez, Mark Powell and Domenica Rasi, and juniors Ashlee Kazan, Robbie Morana Jessica Popowich. The senior class royalty was Brendan Alyward, Amelia Caselnova, Leonard Li, Madison Lowery and Zachary Russo.

Receiver Pravato Reminds Residents Of Mortgage Satisfaction Or New Homeowner Notification

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes, Jeffrey Pravato, reminds residential property owners that it is essential to notify his office upon satisfying their mortgage.

In addition, Receiver Pravato encourages residents who recently purchased a home, condominium or coop unit, or recently refinanced, to be sure that notification in writing is sent to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, NY 11771-1539 or email receiveroftaxes@ oysterbay-ny.gov

“This will ensure that tax bills are received promptly by the homeowner,” Pravato

said. “A homeowner relying on a bank, attorney, or Nassau County to notify the Tax Office may find there is a delay in billing the homeowner directly, which can lead to the imposition of a late payment penalty.”

“When writing, property owners should include the legal property description, including the school district, section, block, and lot numbers, as well as the name and address to whom tax bills should be directed. In the case of condominiums, the building and unit number should be noted,” Pravato said.

Residents may also report their information in person by visiting the

Office of the Receiver of Taxes at Town Hall North at 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay or Town Hall South at 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. Both offices are open daily from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents.

The Receiver noted that property owners residing in incorporated villages must also notify their village assessor.

Homeowners requiring further assistance should contact the Office of the Receiver of Taxes at (516) 624-6400.

“The knowledgeable and courteous tax information specialists on my staff will be happy to assist you,” concluded Pravato.

Fall Frenzy Auction

Plans are well underway for Dominican Village’s annual Fall Frenzy Auction (formerly known as the Chinese Auction Extravaganza).

There will be countless raffle baskets with separate raffles for “gold prizes” including flat-screen TVs, designer handbags/wallets, lottery trees, gift cards, and more. The event will also include a wine grab raffle.

Free Family Fall & Halloween Festival

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Family Fall & Halloween Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, located at 451 Unqua Road in Massapequa.

“This festival is a great opportunity for residents to celebrate Halloween and the fall season with

activities that are fun for residents of all ages,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Families are sure to enjoy all that the festival has to offer, including pumpkin picking and our popular Halloween hayride. Remember, costumes are encouraged!”

NMFD To Host The Annual Rag-A-Muffin Parade

The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade on Sunday, October 30th.

The event will start at 12 noon at United Skates of America (1276 Hicksville Road), travel north on Hicksville, and conclude at the Hagedorn Little Village School adjacent to the North Massapequa Fire Department’s Station 2 on Hicksville Road. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered to be eligible for free prizes.

“The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Mark J. Frascella. “For nearly five decades we have hosted this outstanding event, which has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young people. Our department is extremely proud of this event and I know our residents are looking forward to enjoying many more years of the Rag-AMuffin Parade.”

The event is always held just prior to Halloween, which provides some

extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It’s a great day for the children,” Chief Frascella said. “Kids can wear costumes before Halloween to make sure they’re ready for trick-ortreating. After the costume parade they’re sure to be excited with the prospect of winning a bicycle or another great prize at the awards ceremony.”

Residents Invited To Enter Free Holiday Concert Lottery

With the holiday season fast approaching, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to enter a ticket lottery for this year’s Town Holiday Concerts, being held in early December at the Tilles Center at LIU Post in Brookville.

“Due to the overwhelming popularly of these amazing shows, the Town hosts a lottery for residents interested in attending,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “This provides a fair and impartial system that has proven to be successful, and gives all residents an equal opportunity

to attend one of our wonderful performances. As always, this outstanding holiday entertainment is provided free of charge for our residents.”

This year’s Holiday Concerts are scheduled for two evenings: Monday, December 5th and Tuesday, December 6th at 7:30pm; as well as a matinee performance on Tuesday, December 6th at 2pm.

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and The Workforce Partnership announced that a Mega Job Fair will take place on Friday, October 28th, at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. There is no charge for admission and parking is free. Veterans’ admission begins at 9:00 a.m., while doors for General Admission open at 9:30 a.m. The event runs until 1:30 p.m.

Employers from across Long Island will be seeking candidates for positions including entry and middle management level, licensed professional, hospitality and food service industries, banking, staffing and individuals with technical and IT experience.

“We’re proud to have helped thousands of residents find meaningful employment through our career center and private

sector jobs fair,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Workforce Partnership and Town of Oyster Bay are committed to helping residents find meaningful employment opportunities as well as assisting local businesses in recruiting qualified employees. This Mega Job Fair will connect private and public sector employers with job seekers.”

The Town of Oyster Bay serves as administrator of The Workforce Partnership, a consortium of local governments funded by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that provides free valuable resources to both employers and job seekers at Career Centers in Hicksville and Massapequa. These centers help train employees to meet the needs of the private sector, connecting qualified job seekers with employers, and by assisting applicants in accessing job

opportunities. The Centers offer Resource Rooms, which are equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, complete with Microsoft software and internet access. Additionally, these Centers offer residents access to job listings, resource materials, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones. The Centers provide employability and computer workshops, as well as career counselors who will guide residents through their job search. Computer workshops are taught on-site in modern computer labs. Residents can increase their marketability by updating or acquiring new computer skills at the Centers.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Town Partners With Community Group To Collect Peanut Butter

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town will partner with the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club to host a peanut butter collection drive. Residents are invited to donate new, unopened and sealed peanut butter to help replenish local food pantries and support families in need. Drop-off containers are located at Town Halls North and South, as well as at the Town Ice Skating Center.

“We are proud to partner with this great organization to help ‘spread the love’ and stock local food pantry shelves with this very popular product,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Peanut butter has a long shelf life, provides many nutrients and doesn’t require refrigeration, making it among the most highly requested items from local food banks. We thank the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club for again putting our local communities first

with another wonderful initiative to help others.”

The Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club mission is to provide and encourage involvement in education, charitable and social programs for the men of local communities, and to support the local and wider community with activities and contributions.

“The MassapequaFarmingdale Men’s Club has been assisting local foodbanks for more than five years, especially during the most trying

times at the height of the COVID pandemic,” said Councilman Hand. “Like all of the organization’s endeavors, proceeds from this event go entirely to help those in need.”

Assemblyman Durso Holds Food Drive To Address Critical Need

Assemblyman Michael Durso, in coordination with Long Island Cares and ShopRite Massapequa, recently held a 2-day food collection event to address the critical need for food assistance throughout Long Island communities.

“As Long Islanders struggle to keep up with rising costs, my office will continue to host essential food and supply drives to help our neighbors in need,” said Durso. “This event was

a huge success collecting over 2,500 pounds of food thanks to the overwhelming generosity of all who donated. Special thanks to Long Island Cares and ShopRite Massapequa for continually supporting our communities especially during these trying times.”

All items collected through the food drive benefitted Long Island Cares Inc. - The Harry Chapin Food Bank which assists Long Islanders in need.

Annalise Taylor Named Long Island Scholar Artist

Annalise Taylor of the Massapequa UFSD, who is studying Production and Managerial Arts at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), has been named a Scholar Artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA). She is among only 20 students from across the Island to be honored with prestigious awards in the 2022-2023 Scholar-Artist competition and to be profiled in Newsday.

“My experience at LIHSA has helped me to expand my artistic abilities in all aspects of technical theatre,” said Annalise, who arrived at the school with cursory knowledge in costumes and sewing, and now has a considerable skill set to draw on. She credits not only the education she received in the classroom, including the creation of life casts in makeup class, but also the invaluable practical experience she has gained, such as working on a puppet show for the Long Island Children’s Museum.

For Annalise, her instructors have served as more than just teachers, but also as mentors who have helped her to prepare for college and careers. They have not only helped her to expand and refine her portfolio, but also to “make connections in the real world. They’ve introduced me to several different career paths that I would never have

considered before.”

Annalise plans to attend college, where she will study technical theatre with a concentration in costume design. She hopes to become a costume designer specializing in historical costumes, and to one day “own my own studio, creating costumes for theatre and film.”

To earn an award in the Scholar-Artists program, students must demonstrate the highest level of artistic excellence, as well as outstanding academic achievement (a grade point average of 90 or above).

Candidates are evaluated based on performances, a portfolio of their work and a written essay about how the arts have enriched their lives.

Winners are chosen by a committee of arts educators and other professionals, with the final selection being made by a separate steering committee.

Councilwoman Maier Announces Open House For Town Pre-School Programs

Town of Oyster Bay residents who are interested in enrolling their children in a pre-school program are invited to attend an Open House at one of the Town’s two pre-schools, located in Syosset-Woodbury and Marjorie Post Parks. Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites parents to the facilities to learn about the popular program available to three-and four-year-olds in the Town of Oyster Bay.
