Massapequa Music Students Earn All-State Nod

Up to four Massapequa High School students could be performing in this year’s All-State Music Festival hosted by the New York State School Music Association.

Cooper Arbisi is assured a spot in an honors ensemble, while Teresa Greene, Jayden Pearl and Arianna Surrow were selected as alternates.

Cooper, a junior, was named to the All-State Mixed Choir. He auditioned in the spring by singing “Maria” from West Side Story as said

that earning an All-State selection has been a goal.

“I’m very thankful to have this opportunity,” said Cooper, who has been taking voice lessons since fifth grade, in addition to singing in the chorus since elementary school. “It’s really satisfying to see my hard work pay off.”

Teresa, a junior was selected as an All-State alternate in band, and 11th grader Jayden and 12th grader Arianna are alternates

to the All-State chorus. The NYSSMA All-State Music Conference and Festival will be held from Dec. 1-4 in Rochester.

Director of Fine and Performing Arts Vincent Green, as well as high school music teachers Eva Arnold, Ilena Dempsey, Andrew Dwork, Nichole Greene and Marjorie Spagnuolo congratulate the four highly dedicated studentmusicians on this great accomplishment.

Dominican Village’s Fall Frenzy Auction

Plans are well underway for Dominican Village’s annual Fall Frenzy Auction (formerly known as the Chinese Auction Extravaganza).

There will be countless raffle baskets with separate raffles for “gold prizes” including flat-screen TVs, designer handbags/wallets, lottery trees, gift cards, and more. The event will also

include a wine grab raffle.

Register early for the dinner auction to be held Friday, November 4th from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. located on the grounds of Dominican Village in the Helen Butler Hall. The general public is invited to view and submit raffle chances on Thursday, November 3rd, and on the same day of the main event, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the

Helen Butler Hall. Winners need not be present.

It takes several months for a group of exceptional volunteers to coordinate, wrap, and record the many baskets for raffles, so we are asking our friends and supporters for the following new items large baskets, children’s bikes, board games, gift cards, wine, and mystery gifts.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

October is a month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways.

October 14 is World Sight Day, which focuses on public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues to influence funding for national blindness prevention and to educate about blindness prevention.

October 15 is White Cane Day, established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane, to help motorists identify and yield to people using one and to create legal penalties for not doing so.

Additionally, the entire month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities, past and present, and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Taken together, a common goal of these intersecting events is to raise the level of appreciation for people who do not have full use of their sight, yet overcome daily challenges to live and be treated equally alongside their sighted brothers and sisters.

Helen Keller Services (HKS) is a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation. Since 1893, they have been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are blind, have low vision or combined hearing and vision loss. Their mission is to enable individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, have vision loss, or hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in the communities of their choice.

Town Unveils New Synthetic Turf At Field Of Dreams In Massapequa

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined local athletes on the newly upgraded athletic fields at Field of Dreams in Massapequa. The Town of Oyster Bay recently completed the replacement of two synthetic turf fields, including the east soccer/ lacrosse/football field and the practice field. These replacements not only improve the playing surfaces for young athletes, but also the overall safety for players.

“Synthetic fields

improve the look of our community, help alleviate the high costs associated with maintaining grass fields, and increase play time for athletes as weather has limited impact on the fields,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are so pleased to welcome back our local athletes to enjoy this beautiful new facility and take full advantage of the updated fields.”

Synthetic turf fields generally have an approximate useful life of 8-10 years, depending on use, and are less

expensive than the longterm cost of maintaining natural grass and a dirt surface. Synthetic fields also provide the potential for fewer cancellations of games due to inclement weather, as the field is able to absorb rain storms in a manner that is not possible on a dirt infield.

College Options Galore For Massapequa Students

Massapequa High School hosted its largest college fair in three years on Sept. 16, with hundreds of sophomores, juniors and seniors taking advantage of the opportunity to learn about prospective schools and military institutions.

Paul Weber, executive assistant for guidance, said representatives from 50 colleges were in attendance with another 50 that were slated for Sept. 23.

There were many local schools including Nassau Community College and Hofstra University, along with colleges from upstate New York and as far away as Florida and Louisiana.

Mr. Weber said for some of the colleges, it was their first time attending Massapequa’s college fair.

Students used the time to pick up brochures, sign up for email alerts and talk to college representatives.

Mr. Weber said that many of the admissions counselors in attendance will be the ones reviewing applications, so the college fair is a way to make a good first impression.

“I’m always impressed with the level of interaction that I see,” Mr. Weber said. “The students are making the most the opportunity to collect information and share information about themselves as well.”

NMFD To Host The Annual Rag-A-Muffin Parade

The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Children’s Rag-A-Muffin Costume Parade on Sunday, October 30th. The event will start at 12 noon at United Skates of America (1276 Hicksville Road), travel north on Hicksville, and conclude at the Hagedorn Little Village School adjacent to the North Massapequa Fire Department’s Station 2 on Hicksville Road. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered to be eligible for free prizes.

“The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Mark J. Frascella. “For nearly five decades we have hosted this outstanding event, which has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young people. Our department is extremely proud of this event and I know our residents are looking forward to enjoying many more years of the Rag-AMuffin Parade.”

The event is always held just prior to Halloween, which provides some

extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It’s a great day for the children,” Chief Frascella said. “Kids can wear costumes before Halloween to make sure they’re ready for trick-ortreating. After the costume parade they’re sure to be excited with the prospect of winning a bicycle or another great prize at the awards ceremony.”

Breast Cancer Survivors

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

On Sunday, September 18th Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum hosted its 4th Annual Honey Bee Experience to highlight the insect’s importance to Long Island’s ecosystem and to provide guests with the opportunity to have a safe, up-close look at the magnificence of these endangered insects. The event is part of Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum’s ongoing commitment to providing Pinelawn families and community members impactful, educational experiences.

Girl Scouts from 5 local troops gathered on the grounds throughout the day to participate in an in-depth Q&A with Master Beekeeper, Steve Chen to learn more about the honey bee and to enjoy a hands-on learning experience at the hives. Pinelawn provided educational activities such as honey bee arts and crafts, a “Find the Queen,” children’s activity where participants searched for the queen bee within the observation hive and fresh honey tasting straight from the bee hive frames.

“Honey Bees and other pollinators are in decline. With more and more honey bee species being added to the list of endangered species, it its becoming more necessary than ever to educate the public on how essential these insects are to the beauty of our grounds and to Long Island’s larger ecosystem,” said Fred Hoffmann, Grounds Supervisor at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “We hope all our Pinelawn families and local community members were able to take a moment to admire how beautiful the honey bee is while we shared our own knowledge of their role in our environment.”

Hive Program began in 2017 to support the honey bee population and promote pollination.

Across Pinelawn’s six hives, they host over 500,000 honey bees that pollinate the grounds’ beautiful gardens as well as the surrounding landscape.

4TH ANNUAL HONEY BEE EXPERIENCE - Quinn, 5, of Massapequa is joined by Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum’s Master Beekeeper, Steve Chen, for an up-close experience with live honey bees during the park’s educational event series on Sunday, September 18th. During the 4th Annual Honey Bee Experience, over 350 Long Islanders had the unique opportunity to learn about how essential the honey bee is in maintaining the beauty of Pinelawn’s grounds and the larger Long Island ecosystem. Attendees participated in honey bee arts and crafts, activities and had the opportunity to ask questions during an informative Q&A session. Participants even had the chance to try fresh honey straight from Pinelawn’s 500,000 on-site honey bee population.
