Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced that the Town will host its 5th Annual Walk for Autism to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities.

The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 23rd, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party.

“Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. Today, one in 88 individuals is diagnosed with autism. Only a few short years ago, the rate of diagnosis was one in 150, and this staggering statistic makes it the fastestgrowing serious developmental disability in the United States,” Councilman Pinto said.

“There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have surfaced since the disorder has grown more

Before I turn this column over to Dori Scofield, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Superviser, I’m going to request that our Readers respond as quickly and as generously as they can. It’s going to take all of us to pitch in and help to heal these poor innocent souls. The 23 were used by their human owners in horrific and inhumane ways.

Some were used as living “bait” to train the fighting dogs, their teeth filed down or their mouths strapped shut, unmercifly bitten and mauled. Their faces and bodies bare the visable scars; their hearts the invisible aching with longing for the love and homes they would never know. Others were used as breeders, living in small filthy cages - no human contact, no grassy fields to run in, no sweet fresh air or warm human touch. They bore litters of puppies sold to continue the cycle of cruelty. And then there are the fighting dogs, beaten and forced to act against their own sweet natures, prodded into tearing and killing. They were killed and discarded as garbage if they refused to fight.

Readers, our combined communities of Nassau and Suffolk Counties need to pull together and make sure each and every one of these dogs has a “happily ever after.” There was evil living amoung us and it will take the good in all of us to make things right.

Please read on for a glimpse of what Dori saw on the raid that saved 23 lives...

“On September 9th, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, along with the Suffolk County SPCA and Suffolk County Police Department,

confiscated 23 Pit Bulls from a deplorable home in Shirley, NY. Many of the dogs were stacked in rusted cages in a dark, very hot garage.

All were living in their own feces and urine. Others were locked up in various rooms of the house with little or no ventilation, and the remainder lived outside in makeshift kennels. The stench could only be tolerated by a seasoned rescuer. There are few words to describe the expression in the eyes that stared back at us, unsure if we were friend or foe. After five hours of examining and removing the dogs, they were all brought back to The Brookhaven Animal Shelter to begin a new chapter in their lives. I’m sure many readers will cheer for their safety but please understand, they are but another 23 dogs added to the already overcrowded shelter.

These dogs need homes desperately. Some are young, some are old, some are more beat up and scarred than others. But one thing is true... all are yearning for the love, companionship and a warm, cozy environment only a loving home can provide. Yes, we need money toward their medical care, blankets to keep them feeling secure, food to nourish their bodies, but more than anything, homes to nourish their souls. Most of the dogs are petite and all are sweet and submissive. I am asking everyone on Long Island to do something, one thing - small or large - for these dogs. Whether you can donate $1 toward the Help the Animals Fund or adopt one of these orphans, please do something. We are the voice of the voiceless... be a voice, change a life forever.”

Massapequa Schools Superintendent Charles V. Sulc was selected to receive the Sister Rose Aquin Caimano D i s t i n g u i s h e d Administrator Award from the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT). The award recognizes his exemplary support of foreign language education and will be presented to him at the NYSAFLT’s Annual Conference Awards Banquet at the Saratoga Hilton on October 5.

“Serving the Massapequa School District for over 40 years, Mr. Sulc has touched the lives of tens of thousands

of students, teachers, administrators and parents,” William Anderson, the district’s LOTE curriculum associate, wrote in his nomination. Described as a person of “impeccable character, genuine compassion and educational vision,” Sulc strongly advocates quality foreign language programs to help prepare students for the 21st century and global workplace.

He enthusiastically supports the district’s growing Mandarin Chinese program and helps maintain a quality German language program while others have eliminated the language from their course offerings.

Rounding out the district’s robust program are courses in Spanish, French, Latin and American Sign Language at the Regents and college levels, with many of its students excelling on national foreign language exams.

This year, Sulc was

instrumental in supporting foreign language teacher Janice Kincaid who became the first teacher in the district to earn National Board Certification. He also approved the district’s participation in the Foreign Language Association of Chairpersons and Supervisors’ Assessment Consortium.

“Charles Sulc’s legacy in the district includes not only the selection of an excellent teaching and supervisory staff but his ability, as an instructional leader, to maintain language programs that continue to flourish,” Lucille Iconis, assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, wrote.

In a strong display of academic excellence, five Massapequa High School seniors were named Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The l o n g - s t a n d i n g competition recognizes high academic achievement and scholarship based on student performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and

other program requirements.

Seniors Joseph Mogavero, Melanie Sheehan, Robyn Tse, Joanna Urli and Joseph Zappa placed among the top 16,000 highestscoring students out of more than 1.5 million test takers nationwide. By meeting more rigorous requirements, they can advance to Finalist standing. Finalists are notified in February and are in the running for

thousands of scholarship prizes awarded in the spring.

“These students are truly amazing individuals and we are extremely proud that the National Merit Scholarship program has recognized their academic talent,” said Dr. Barbara Williams, principal of Massapequa High School. “We wish them the best of luck as they continue on in this competition.”

Most of us have probably experienced some sort of adversity in our lives, whether of the small, petty variety or the large, lifechanging type. Overall, though, it is how we choose to deal with it that ultimately defines us. If, by taking the high road, we can somehow learn from it while not losing our sense of self in the process, well then, that’s really all we can hope to accomplish.

Someone recently pointed out to me that it’s often the star players who are frequently booed while on the road. Why? Because, despite the perceived animosity, there

exists a degree of grudging respect, perhaps even jealousy that the player isn’t part of their own home team.

Well, if that’s the case, then I have to believe criticism is the sincerest form of flattery. Otherwise, why would someone take the time and effort to express such negativity, if not for the sheer fact that they are anything but indifferent?

Rather, they must be quite invested.

Believe me, I will never truly understand those who seem to make their living by spewing hurtful opinions toward others.

Perhaps it makes them feel better about themselves; perhaps they are not

equipped to put their words into something more constructive. Either way, I believe it is a combination of arrogance and ignorance which motivates such behavior.

But so be it. Those who live their lives to bring others down will continue to do so. Those who strive to make a difference in the lives of others will continue their quest to do so. In the end, all that matters is that a difference was made.

If that means wearing that road uniform with pride in the face of adversity, then so be it. Being on the team sure beats being on the outside looking in, doesn’t it?

School’s Back and Soon the Flu Will be Too!! Get A Flu Shot Now! Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area.

If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster.

Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them.

• Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

• Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself.

• Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu?

A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated.

• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage.

• Stay away from people who are sick.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area.

• Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines?

A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable.

Q: Who should get the flu vaccine?

A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What types of vaccinations are available?

A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women.

• The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant) Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types?

A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine.

The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot.

Some minor side effects that could occur are: Soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, Low grade fever, Muscles aches .If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it.

The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, Low grade fever, muscle aches, vomiting.

Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) will hold its 4th Annual Let’s Walk, Let’s Talk…Stepping Together To Prevent Suicide event on Sunday, September 30th on the Boardwalk at Riverside Blvd. in Long Beach.

Registration begins at 11 a.m.

The Crisis Center, now in its 41st year, is dedicated to increasing suicide awareness, educating everyone about the warning signs of suicide, and destigmatizing the subject of suicide and spreading the word that “it’s okay to ask for help.”

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian has received a $12,500 grant from The New York Community Bank Foundation in Roslyn, NY and a $1,500 grant from The WE CARE Fund of the Nassau County Bar Association in Mineola, NY. The donations will go towards funding for Pal-OMine’s Job Security Through Equine Partnerships (J-STEP) Program.

The core objective of the J-STEP Program is to provide employment opportunities to adults with disabilities. Through the J-STEP Program and equine therapy, each participant is able to gain increased self-confidence and improved job skills to help them obtain employment in his or her community.

In 2010, The New York Community Bank Foundation was one of the initial contributors of the J-STEP pilot run and the program has since been successful in implementing a recycling program, organic farming, and horticulture. With the support of local organizations like The New York Community Bank Foundation and The WE CARE Fund, J-STEP continues to help adults with disabilities progress into the workforce and to further develop a green living program and an energy conservation program at Pal-O-Mine.

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 30th anniversary of teaching.

A mother of 22-year-old twins, she wanted to create a unique school where pre-schoolers received the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefited from her professional background and the “world class” training that she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where “only mothers” teach the very youngest children.

A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American dance delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a $6,500 scholarship to NYU for dance education, and a $2,000 academic scholarship to Hofstra.

Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and is now under contract with the company. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo & Juliet, and in July 2004 was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia.

The studio now competes regionally, across Long Island, as well as nationally, in New York City.

Classes are offered in Ballet, Tap, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Streetdance, Modern and Irish step; as well as Acro, Musical Theatre and Terrific Toddler Time for both boys and girls.

Wildwood Fall Festival 2012 The Annual Fall Festival will take place at Wildwood State Park in Wading River on Saturday, September 29th.

Grant Benefits With requests for food assistance at an all-time high on Long Island, food pantries and soup kitchen are not only struggling to keep up with increased demand, but many are in need of suitable equipment to properly store perishable and frozen foods. Thanks to a $25,000 grant by the Long

Island Community Foundation made to Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, much needed help is on the way.

The grant was used to purchase 14 refrigerators, 12 freezers, six shelving units and 26 coolers for 45 of Island Harvest’s member agencies that

serve over 10,000 people from the very youngest to our senior most citizens every month. Island Harvest’s agency clients will benefit from consistent provision of quality fresh, perishable, and frozen products, while giving them a wider choice of food and healthier options, such as

School is back in session at Nassau County Community College (NCC), and Nassau InterCounty Express (NICE) bus service has reinstituted its school year service to accommodate the more than 3,100 students and employees who ride the buses to the college’s Garden City Campus.

The 16x express bus offers non-stop service from the Hempstead Transit Center to NCC, and the n43 route is extended from Roosevelt Field to NCC during the school year. This fall also marks the launch of NICE Bus’s Brand Ambassador Program, which utilizes student “ambassadors” to introduce and assist their fellow students with the particulars of NICE bus service, from stops to routes to schedules.
