YESCCC’s PACT National Overdose Awareness Community Events YES Community Counseling Center’s Partnering in Action Change for Tomorrow (PACT) Initiative is offering Opioid Education and Naloxone Trainings in commemoration of Overdose Awareness Day, celebrated on August 31, 2022. The events are also partnered with Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), Massapequa Elks Lodge #2162 and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC): • Thursday, August 11th 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at St. Kilian Parish, 485 Conklin Street, Farmingdale • Wednesday, August 17th 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Levittown Public Library, 1 Bluegrass Lane, Levittown, • Tuesday, August 23rd 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Massapequa Elks Lodge #2162, 2162 Veterans Blvd, Massapequa. This presentation will also include the Dangers of Vaping. On Wednesday, August 31, 2022, National Overdose Awareness Day, a Lights of Hope

According to the Center for Disease Control, since COVID, there has been an increase in opioid overdose deaths with the number of deaths reaching over 100,000 in the United States. Nassau

County Police report an increase in the number of opioid overdose death from 140 in 2019 to 223 in 2020. Now more than ever Opioid Education and Naloxone Training is necessary to save the lives of our community members struggling with addiction. Durso Announces Summer Reading Challenge The New York State Assembly’s 2022 Summer Reading Challenge is here, and Assemblyman Michael Durso (Massapequa Park) is encouraging students in New York and across Long Island to participate. Assemblyman Durso, in coordination with New York State libraries, is sponsoring this Summer Reading Challenge to inspire kids to explore faroff worlds, discover new interests or learn new skills. Over one million children and teens participated in the Summer Reading Challenge last year and we are looking for more young individuals to join for this year’s theme “Oceans of Possibilities,” celebrating

all things water and oceanrelated. “Summer break is a great time for kids to visit their local library and check out the exciting activities and books they have to offer,” said Durso. “I am encouraging and challenging my own kids and students in my district to continue learning over the summer by picking up a book. Studies have shown that children who read over summer break retain information better, come to school ready to learn, and avoid the loss of learning known as the ‘summer slide’.” After completing 40 or more days of reading and marking each day on the

given calendar provided by Assemblyman Durso, you return the completed form to the Assemblyman’s office and he will award your child with a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading Certificate. ARE YOU PREPAIRED FOR STORM SEASON? Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. Attention Renters & Landlords: Apply Today For Grants Provided By U.S. TREASURY To The Town Of Oyster Bay The Town of Oyster Bay was the recipient of $16 million in Federal funds to assist renters facing economic hardships and housing insecurity as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, designed to help renters facing difficulty in paying their rent and utilities/home energy costs, is being administered by the Long Island Housing Partnership and the official submission period has now reopened. Qualifying residents can submit an Intake Form now through September 16, 2022 at 5pm by visiting https://www.lihp. org/TOBerapintake.html (for the English version) and https:// www.lihp.org/TOBerapintake-SP. html (for the Spanish version) and following the links. Supervisor Saladino stated, “These Federal funds were granted to the Town of Oyster Bay to help residents recover from economic hardships created by the pandemic and government shutdowns. This rental assistance program provides critical funding to prevent homelessness and ensure those experiencing financial hardship are able to recover and rebuild their lives while having a stable place to call home.” The program is designed to assist Town residents with current and prospective rent, arrears for utilities and home energy costs, and other expenses related to housing such as rental security deposits. Both tenants and landlords may apply and both will be requested to participate (tenants must agree to participate). Assistance under this program could be provided for up to 18 months of payments and will cover arrears and costs accrued on or after March 13, 2020. Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis until Federal funds have been exhausted, with a priority granted to very low income households and households with a person unemployed for 90 days or more. To be eligible, a household must meet the following qualifications: Be renting in the Town of

Oyster Bay as a primary residence (including all Villages but excluding the City of Glen Cove); Show that one or more individuals within the household has either qualified for unemployment benefits, experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs, or experienced other financial hardship during or due to the COVID-19 pandemic; Demonstrate that the household is at risk of homelessness or housing instability; and Have household income at or below 80% of the HUD area median income based on calendar year 2020 or current projected 2022 income. Income guidelines vary based on the household size.
