Labriola And Maier Urge Residents To Donate Blood As National Shortage Impacts Hospitals With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Thursday, March 10th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Councilman Labriola stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many

people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.
Councilwoman Maier added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. opportunity to robustly exercise their rights as Nassau County property owners,” Minority Leader Abrahams wrote. “Residents should be immediately notified of the extended deadline as part of the ‘Notice of Tentative Assessed Value’ which must be issued to property owners this week.” The current deadline for residents to file assessment challenges is Tuesday, March 1.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the 11th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Long Island Blues Winter Classic will take place on Saturday, March 5th at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. This special event showcases LI Blues hockey players with special needs enjoying a game they love verse three other teams from the tri-state area. FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves more than 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA’s original orphanage, the Temporary Home for Children, was founded in 1884. Louisa Lee Schuyler, great-granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, spearheaded the establishment of the orphanage. During this upcoming Women’s History Month, Family & Children’s Association will be honoring Louisa Lee Schuyler’s vision by joining forces with some of the most influential female philanthropists and business owners across Long Island with its inaugural Long Island Women in Philanthropy Breakfast & Fashion Show. FCA is extremely proud to represent a female majority workforce, including its management. All of its five divisions are led by women in Assistant Vice President roles and the organization as a whole is very excited about this new initiative; their goal is to bring together like-minded women in our local community. The event will be held on Thursday, March 31st at The Mansion at Oyster Bay in Woodbury from 9am-12pm. Each of FCA’s five divisions will be represented in the fashion show by client and volunteer models who will tell a story of the impact FCA has had on their lives and in the community. Those five divisions are:

Councilman Hand Invites Residents To Apply For Picnic Permits Online location for a family, school, or community group outing set in the great outdoors. Each location, from Teddy Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay to Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa, offers something unique for residents to enjoy,” Councilman Hand said. “Thanks to the hard work of our Parks Department, the process to apply for a picnic permit has now been streamlined to increase convenience and accessibility for residents.” Picnic Permits are required for groups of 25 or more at all Town of Oyster Bay picnic pavilion locations and include exclusive use of the permitted area from
9:00 AM - 6:00 PM on the reservation date. Some locations are covered, have access to water, and permit barbequing. To view picnic availability, residents can visit OysterBayTown. com/Picnic and filter their preferred date, facility, specific location, and features using the page menu. They can then create an account on the same page and apply for the reservation. It is recommended that residents reserve their picnic pavilion early as spaces fill up quickly for the season. Juliette Happe, organized the drive for nonperishable food items, which were donated to the food pantry at YES Community Counseling Center in Massapequa. From Feb. 7-11, students
and staff could place their items in boxes outside of the auditorium based on the team they thought would win the Super Bowl this year – the Cincinnati Bengals or the Los Angeles Rams.
Bowl was important because everyone should have food and no one should have to think about where their next meal is coming from. Her sister Meghan, a sixth
grader, added, “It makes me feel really happy that we’re doing this as a school. It’s a good thing that we’re taking action to help others.”

Assemblyman Durso Introduces Resolution Recognizing February 11, 2022 As P.S. I Love You Day Assemblyman Michael Durso (R-Massapequa Park) recently introduced a resolution on the floor of the Assembly honoring an extraordinary organization, P.S. I Love You Day Inc., and its founders, Jaimie and Brooke DiPalma, by recognizing February 11, 2022 as P.S. I Love You Day in New York State. On this day P.S I Love You Day asks everyone to stand up against bullying, help end depression, and ultimately prevent suicide. On April 23, 2010, then 14-year-old Brooke was dropped off at school by her dad, Joseph DiPalma. On her way out of the car, he said, “I Love You” and she said, “I Love You” back. Little did Brooke know, later that day, she would be
taken out of school and told that her dad tragically died by suicide. Joseph DiPalma was an active member in the community; a former NYPD officer, ex-Chief of the West Islip Fire Department, and President of his Local Chamber of Commerce. P.S. I Love You Day was started in 2010 by sisters Jaimie and Brooke DiPalma, along with their family and the West Islip High School Class of 2014, to celebrate the memory of their father and others lost to suicide. They used the last three words their father said, “I Love You”, as the inspiration for this significant day. Part of their mission is to educate students early about mental health in order to remove the stigma and let
them know it is okay to ask for help. This year P.S. I Love You Day celebrated its 12th Anniversary on Friday, February 11, 2022, in an effort to bring awareness to the importance of mental health and suicide prevention, to stand up to bullying, and to spread kindness. “I commend Jaimie and Brooke DiPalma, and P.S. I Love You Day, for their hard work and dedication advocating on the importance of mental health and encouraging those struggling to ask for help,” said Durso. “It is imperative that more work must be done on the local, State and National levels to offer resources, treatment and prevent another life lost to suicide.”
Illustrator Energizes East Lake Students To Read There are two important components to any children’s story – the words and the pictures. It was the latter that children explored at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District during a visit from illustrator Anna Raff. Ms. Raff, an awardwinning fiction and nonfiction illustrator with more than a dozen books on her resumé, spoke to students on Feb. 4 to kick off East Lake’s Pick a Reading Partner program. The assembly was coordinated by library media specialist
Anna Schwen and reading teachers Carmen Keany, Christina Lipori and Jennifer Ragona, and presented in partnership with the PTA’s Arts in Education committee. In her presentation to kindergartners and first graders, Ms. Raff read, “You Are Not a Cat!” and did a drawing demonstration to show how she captures emotion in illustration. With second graders, she read, “A Big Surprise for Little Card,” and talked about creating characters. East Lake’s oldest readers heard about the illustration
and publishing processes. Each session ended with a question and answer session, in which students were inquisitive about her path to becoming a published illustrator. “I hope that the children are inspired to read more book,” she said. Ms. Raff was warmly greeted by student-made posters and bulletin board displays celebrating many of her books. Additionally, she personally signed copies of any of her books that children purchased in advance of her visit.
