Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water, so no flooding can occur. These are just a few ways homeowners can prepare for storm season. If you need to upgrade or replace any part of your home’s exterior call UNIFIED.

KiDS NEED MoRE Announces 8th Annual HoLiDAY CHEER BUS Elf Ride

Kids Need More, Long Island’s premier 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of children coping with cancer and life threatening illnesses, is proud to announce their 8th Annual HoLiDAY CHEER BUS Elf Ride taking place Sunday, December 18th, 2022.

For the eighth year in a row, KiDS NEED MoRE’s HoLiDAY CHEER BUS ELF RiDE’s buses stocked with toy-delivering elves will drive directly to homes all over Long Island to make wishes come true for over 1,000 children coping with cancer and serious illness.

“We started this event knowing that all parents feel the pressure to make the season magical for their children, but when families are stressed with medical visits, painful treatments, and financial burdens, taking part in holiday festivities can be overwhelming, notes Melissa Firmes, President, KiDS NEED MoRE. “We wanted to make the experience not only wonderful for the children, but also as a gift to the entire family, and a way for everyone to enjoy the holiday together.”

KiDS NEED MoRE will have a fleet of over 40 buses with over 20 volunteer elves on each vehicle delivering holiday wishes for kids coping with life-threatening illnesses and their siblings this year, in the hopes that parents and caregivers do not have to pay anything for the holidays. Many of the volunteers are survivors or bereaved family members themselves. One bus will also be delivering to New Jersey families on Saturday, December 10th, 2022.

The rest of the fleet will be delivering all across Long Island, NYC, and one bus in CT Sunday, 12/18 beginning at 9:30 AM and going into the evening until all the gifts have been delivered. The Holiday Cheer Bus Elf

There will be free food, drinks and music at The American Legion Post 1120 in Lindenhurst, NY all families and volunteers who would like to join in the celebration.

How to Help

KiDS NEED MoRE is recruiting community partners for this year’s event to sponsor buses and collect toys, volunteers to bring joy and merriment, and seeking referrals of local families to gift. From bus sponsorship to becoming an Elf yourself, there is something for everyone. Below are details from KiDS NEED MoRe on all the ways to participate this year:

Looking to do something special with your friends and family this season? Sign up to be an elf! We also welcome businesses to partner with us. It’s a wonderful workplace team building activity. You can collect toys and gifts, and then, on December 18th 2022, join as a team and deliver the gifts, sing carols and spread joy all over Long Island with us! Buses leave from 600 Albany Avenue, Amityville and the Miller Place area.

The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

Local Law #6-2022 Chapter 141, Property Maintenance Buildings & Structures, Air Conditioning Units

BE IT ENACTED by the Board of Trustees of the Incorporated

The Village Board of Trustees has determined that it is necessary to regulate the location of air conditioning units in Business Districts within the Village. The regulation of such is necessary for the protection and maintenance of the health, safety, and welfare of the inhabitants of the Village. Moreover, the regulation of such is necessary to promote the aesthetic values of the Village and to increase property values. The Village Board of Trustees finds that this Code section is reasonably aimed at achieving this goal and that the governance of the Village will be enhanced by enactment of the regulations set forth in this section.

It shall be unlawful to install, operate or maintain an air conditioning unit on the portion of the structure abutting the street in any area zoned Business District. By amortization, the right to maintain any legal pre-existing air conditioning unit in violation of this law shall terminate eighteen (18) months from the adoption of this Local Law. Further, an application for an exemption from the application of this Local Law may be made by the owner(s) to the Village Administrator. When considering whether to grant an exemption, the Village Administrator shall consider whether the property owner(s) will suffer unreasonable financial hardship or an undue burden in complying with this article.

In the event that an owner(s)’ application is denied, the owner(s) may appeal the determination to the Village Board of Trustees. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of notice of the denial.

Lindenhurst Annual Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting

With the flick of a switch on a cold Sunday December evening, the Village of Lindenhurst rang in the holiday season with its annual Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting Ceremony. The Christmas tree was lit by this year’s Lindenhurst Historical Society honorees, Maryann and Thomas Weckerle. The Village also unveiled the new holiday decorations and lights adorning the Lindenhurst Downtown Business District.

Deputy Mayor

Maryann Weckerle said, “It was a great honor for me and Tom to be chosen to light the Lindenhurst Christmas tree this year. It was so exiting to be there, with thousands of people in attendance, and to be a part of this special holiday tradition in our Village!”

The Lindenhurst Fire Department Holiday Parade is one of the Village’s most beloved traditions. For years, we have seen many creative and festive floats, and families coming

together to celebrate the holiday season.

“The tree lighting ceremony is a Village tradition dating back to 1948,” said Mayor Michael Lavorata. “It is the most wonderful time of the year, and we are here to make it extra wonderful. I continue to be so grateful to serve as the Mayor of our wonderful Village. Please come out to Village Square Park for our Centennial Ball Drop and Fireworks on New Year’s Eve, 7:00 –9:00 PM.”
