BE IT ENACTED by the Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst as follows:

Chapter 141, Property Maintenance

Section 4, Buildings and Structures; Paragraph K, Air Conditioning Units of the Code of the Village of Lindenhurst is hereby amended to read as follows:

§141-4 K. Air Conditioning Units.

Legislative Intent

The Village Board of Trustees has determined that it is necessary to regulate the

location of air conditioning units in Business Districts within the Village. The regulation of such is necessary for the protection and maintenance of the health, safety, and welfare of the inhabitants of the Village. Moreover, the regulation of such is necessary to promote the aesthetic values of the Village and to increase property values. The Village Board of Trustees finds that this Code section is reasonably aimed at achieving this goal and that the governance of the Village will be enhanced by enactment of the regulations set forth in this section.

DELETE 141-4 K. IN ITS ENTIRETY AND REPLACE WITH:

It shall be unlawful to install, operate or maintain an air conditioning unit on the portion of the structure abutting the street in any area zoned Business District.

By amortization, the right to maintain any legal pre-existing air conditioning unit in violation of this law shall terminate eighteen (18) months from the adoption of this Local Law. Further, an application for an exemption from the application of this Local Law may be made by the owner(s) to the Village Administrator. When considering whether to grant an exemption, the Village Administrator shall consider whether the property owner(s)

will suffer unreasonable financial hardship or an undue burden in complying with this article.

In the event that an owner(s)’ application is denied, the owner(s) may appeal the determination to the Village Board of Trustees. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of notice of the denial.

Severability

If any clause, sentence, paragraph, section or part of this article shall be adjudged by any court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, such judgment shall not affect, impair or invalidate the remainder thereof but shall be confined in its operation to the clause, sentence, paragraph, section or part thereof directly involved in said judgment.

Effective Date

This ordinance shall become effective immediately upon filing with the Secretary of State.

On Monday, November 21, 2022, Noelle Lambert and The Bryn Elliott Team launched a Holiday Donation Drive, benefitting the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, an organization that strives to end homelessness on Long Island, and to alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping others, but more specifically assisting the homeless is really important to me,” said Noelle, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “When you strip away all the excess and get down to the basics - the minimum that one should have in order to put their best foot forward every day - what remains is a home, along with food, and the like. There are countless people struggling and facing homelessness right now on Long Island and it just feels like the right thing to do to help them.”

The drive will run through December 19th and has five drop-off locations throughout Long Island. “This year the organization is desperately in need of non perishable food and personal care items,” said Bryn Elliott, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with The Bryn Elliott Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “They’re also looking for clothing, socks and winter coats. We’re hopeful that this drive will make a difference by helping people who need it; especially during the toughest time of the year to be homeless.”

Among its wide range of mentalhealth-related services, MHAW offers many forms of assistance for veterans in Suffolk County. These offerings address affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support, and other services.

To allow readers to get a humanscale picture of the real-life ways that MHAW supports local veterans in need, here are the stories of “John” and “Mary.”

“John” had served our country for more than eight years as a Marine, including witnessing the aftermath of the Beirut barracks bombings in 1983 that had killed 241 American personnel and dozens of others.

He proceeded to face major difficulty adapting to post-service life, and used food to help him cope. John became significantly overweight and homeless, with a hotel as his residence for two years. It was nearly impossible to find a house that accommodated his needs until he connected with “Housing Our Homeless Heroes,” an initiative that helps veterans regain their sense of independence with supportive housing.

Happily, John is now living in a stabilized environment with dignity and respect.

As a second example, “Mary” had been discharged from the service last August, had no income, nowhere to go, and unfortunately was living in her car. She reached out to the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, run in collaboration with the Economic

Opportunity Council (EOC) of Suffolk, a Patchoguebased social services organization.

Mary worked with

the SSVF team to locate and obtain permanent housing. She also worked with a case manager and a health care navigator to apply for the VA’s service-connected disability program, where she was approved for 100-percent compensation. Mary was also connected to the Northport VA Medical Center, where she began receiving health care. In addition, Mary worked with an employment specialist who assisted her with her resume, job search, and interview prep.

As a result, Mary ultimately secured a full-time job. She has expressed her gratefulness to MHAW and to EOC of Suffolk for the critical assistance she received at the time when she needed it most.

After all they have given to America, our veterans deserve support from all of us here in Suffolk County and across the nation. With this in mind, we urge you to play a role in introducing local veterans in need to MHAW.

Debut Theater Company Presents “Fly Away Home”

Debut Theater Company is opening its new play, Fly Away Home, on December 2 at BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst at 149 North Wellwood Avenue. The play will run December 2, 3, 9, 10 at 8:00 pm, and December 5 and 11 at 2:00 pm.

In this original comedydrama by Anthony DiFranco, an aging woman who has spent her life running an offoff-Broadway theater tries valiantly to put one last wonderful show on her stage before the creditors close it down. Two young actors pitch in to help her, along with

the broody priest from the rectory next door, his longsuffering housekeeper, and a dauntless nurse. Life, work, art - this is a play about what they are and aren’t. And it is a play that suits the Holiday mood perfectly.

The cast includes Victoria Grazioli, Josie McSwane, Brandon Robinson, Martin Knapp, Missy Roche, and Erin Biener. Direction is by Deborah Rupy.

Lindenhurst Moose Lodge 1421 member Thomas Kropp will be traveling to the Ukraine, along with Father Olvian Popovici, priest of the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church. They will be visiting and bringing supplies to those affected and displaced by Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The

Lindenhurst Moose Lodge has donated boxes of “Tommy Moose” dolls for Tom to deliver and distribute to the Ukrainian orphanages. Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “Thank you to the men and women of the Lindenhurst Moose Lodge for this act of kindness. The church has already

sent boxes of items overseas, and collected funds that have been donated to the Ukraine. I am touched that so many people, especially those who have no personal ties to the Ukraine, have come forward to lend a helping hand.”

A VISIT FROM NORTH LINDENHURST FIRE DEPARTMENT - Caring & Creative Childcare & Early Learning center would like to thank Firefighter Chris from the North Lindenhurst Fire Department for his recent visit. The little scholars loved learning and exploring all about the fire truck. He made Safety Week extra special! They would also like to thank Officer Dara of COPE and Crossing Guard Lisa for taking the time to teach the children about street safety!

has been committed to advancing the independence, productivity, and full citizenship of people with disabilities by creating Life Without Limits. The Children’s Center, located in Commack, has provided over 60 years of excellence in educational services including preschool, school-age programs and early intervention services tailored to meet the physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of children with disabilities from birth to 21 years of age. The Children’s Center currently serves over 80 infants and children through age 21, with a wide range of developmental disabilities and diagnoses.

Middle School Students Host Thanksgiving Food Drive

A collaborative effort at Lindenhurst Middle School recently produced an impressive community service effort as numerous student organizations came together to collect and

organize food donations prior to Thanksgiving.

As part of the food drive, students from the honor society, student council, Leaders Club and the Lindy Cares Club collected food

during the two-week food drive and separated and packaged it before it was to be donated to local families in need.

Knights Raised $1,000 For OLPH

$1,000 FOR OLPH - The Lindenhurst Knights of Columbus managed the 50:50 at the OLPH Golden Ticket fundraiser chaired by Meg Danaher and Bob Meade. The parishioners, during the fundraiser celebration, graciously put over $2,000 into the fund which was split with OLPH and the winner! “Winter On Wellwood” Holiday Celebration

On Sunday, December 4th, the Village of Lindenhurst will herald the official start of the 2022 Holiday Season when, in partnership with several community organizations, it will host “Winter on Wellwood”! Beginning at 12:00 PM, the Village, Chamber of Commerce, Business Improvement District, Fire Department, Historical Society, Kiwanis Club, Mayor’s Beautification Society, Memorial Library, and Moose Lodge will turn Village Square Park into a magical, winter wonderland of family fun for all ages!

The festivities will include hot chocolate, cookies, & photo ops with Santa and his winter

friends, holiday shopping & food vendors, an ice carving demonstration, holiday movies, musicians & carolers, and new this year, FREE Carousel rides!

The day’s events will end with the traditional Lindenhurst Fire Department Holiday Parade (kicking of around 4:30), and culminate in the crowning event, the Lindenhurst Historical Society’s 74th Annual Tree Lighting. This year’s honored Tree Lighters will be lifelong Lindenhurst residents, and lifetime Historical Society members, Tom & Maryann Weckerle.

Selected in appreciation of their tireless efforts on behalf of the Lindenhurst Historical Society, Tom

and Maryann exemplify unwavering support of the Society’s mission, as well as a commitment to outstanding community engagement. As a Village Trustee, Maryann serves as Deputy Mayor, and Tom is a 50-year member of the Lindenhurst Fire Department. The Weckerles are also Lindenhurst small business owners, and part of the Village’s thriving downtown. The couple own Bak & Vogel Paints, a Wellwood Avenue mainstay for more than 70 years.

It has been proposed by the Village of Lindenhurst to make a section of Catskill Avenue, from 33rd Street to North Strong Avenue, a OneWay Traffic Only southbound street. It is also proposed to stop southbound traffic onto Catskill Avenue from Sunrise Highway. In the interest of traffic safety, and quality of life, these proposed changes would improve the traffic conditions and tranquility of the area.
