Career Path

HARDING SCHOOL: HOMECOMING - Harding Avenue students came out to support their school at the Lindenhurst homecoming parade. This year’s theme was a favorite ride from one of the four major amusement parks and Harding Avenue represented their school spirit by creating a beautifully crafted float based on the Dumbo ride at Disney World. In addition, the float displayed coloring pages by the Harding children. Students had a great time supporting their school. The float will continue to be displayed on the school’s stage for all the children to see.

The Lindenhurst Historical Society, located at 272 South Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst, will be holding a parade march on Veterans’ Day, Monday, November 11, marking the 100th Anniversary of the dedication of the World War I monument on Wellwood Avenue.

The parade route will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the corners of West John Street and School Street across from the Evangel Church. It will proceed down Wellwood Avenue and end at the site of the Memorial on the corner of Hoffman and Wellwood Avenues.

A brunch will be offered at the American Legion Hall @ 80 Herbert Street in Lindenhurst for the price of $10.00 per parson.

The Copiague Teachers Association donated to Circle of Love and the local food pantry for their Thanksgiving outreach on behalf of the board. The Copiague Supervisors donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Copiague Association of Principals gave a donation to Friends of Karen, an organization which benefits children with cancer or other lifethreatening diseases.

Packing the kids’ lunches for school means you have control over which foods they are eating. Parents can manage nutritious meals even when the kids are at school. The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given.

The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a sevenday inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that

Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood.

6 Tricks For Storing Halloween Treats Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults.

Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy.

Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-or-treaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage.

Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone.

1. Go nutty first. Nuts and oils will not last as

long as some other candy ingredients.

Consume candy that is full of nuts first. You can try freezing candy containing nuts, but there is no guarantee the texture will remain the same upon thawing.

2. Keep an eye on chocolate.

Chocolate needs to be kept under cool conditions to prolong its shelf life. The National Confectioners Association says dark chocolate can be kept for one to two years if wrapped in foil and stored in a cool, dark and dry place, such as a pantry.

Milk and white chocolate have a more limited storage time of no more than eight to 10 months. Hershey’s does not recommend putting chocolate in the refrigerator, as doing so can affect texture.

3. Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original and unopened packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the candies, the better.

Halloween has become a hugely popular time for fun and festivities, but with it comes the potential for a variety of fire hazards. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages every-one to take these simple precautions to stay safe without sacrificing that fun.

“Halloween brings an opportunity to wear fun costumes, decorate our homes, and eat too much candy,” says Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “However, without proper safety precautions, we run the risk of turning good times into the wrong kind of scary ones.”

According to NFPA research, between 2012 and 2016, decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 800 reported home structure fires per year, resulting in an average of two civilian deaths, 34 civilian injuries and $11 million in direct property damage. The decoration was too close to a heat source such as a candle or equipment in almost half of these fires.

NFPA offers these tips to stay safe during the spooky season:

Costumes: Avoid fabric that billows or trails behind you, as these can easily ignite. If you are making your own costume, avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen and cotton, which can be very flammable.

Decorations: Many common decorations like cornstalks, crepe paper, and dried flowers are very flammable. Keep these and similar decorations far away from any open flames or heat sources, like candles, heaters, and light bulbs.

Candles: Using candles as decoration can be risky if not done correctly. Keep them in a well- attended area out of the path of potential trick-ortreaters. Remind children of the dangers of open flames, and make sure they are supervised

at all times when candles are lit. Extinguish candles before leaving an area.

Jack-O-lanterns: Glow sticks or electric candles are the safest choice when it comes to lighting up your jack-o-lantern, but if you choose to use a real candle, do so with extreme caution. Light a candle inside a jack-o-lantern using long fireplace matches or a utility lighter, and keep it away from other decorations.

Visibility: Give children flashlights or glowsticks for lighting, these can even be incorporated into the costume.

If your child has a mask, ensure the eye holes are large enough for them to see clearly.
