The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Additionally, the program offers nutrition and fitness workshops focusing on healthy lifestyle choices. If you would like more information about this program, please visit www. helenkeller.org.

Don’t forget, this entire month is designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. The Fourth Annual New York Long Island Film Festival October 20-22, 2022

The New York Long Island Film Festival (NYLIFF) will open its doors to for the fourth annual festival on October 20, 2022, at The South Shore Theatre Experience – 115 South Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst NY 11757 and will continue October 21 and 22 at the Lindenhurst Moose Lodge – 883 South Broadway, Lindenhurst NY 11757. The festival will run on Thursday from Noon to 7 PM at the theatre and from 10 AM to 9 PM on Friday and Saturday at the Moose Lodge. Over 85 films will be shown during the three-day festival and tickets range from $1012.00 per block, $28.00 per day or $75.00 for the entire festival VIP Pass. Filmmaker Gerry Ferretti created NYLIFF in 2019 along with friend and actress Katie Schrader to give equal opportunity

to all filmmakers, actors, actresses, writers and artists who part their hearts and souls into their crafts – especially those who might lack the resources necessary to perfectly polish their work.

In the past, many great artists were discovered for their unique talents and abilities even if all the technical aspects were not in place. Recognizing a great story, actor or script while not yet perfected should be the goal of the people running a festival – regardless of whether a 10 million-dollar, starstudded film or an ultralow-budget iphone short. The NYLIFF team proudly brings equal opportunity to these filmmakers and all the ones in between.

The team brings years of experience as writers, actors, directors, musicians and of course filmmakers, dedicated

to bringing the greatest talents to the big screen as well as discovering those hidden gems that might otherwise fall through the cracks. It is this standard of excellence and commitment that has established NYLIFF as one of the most successful and highly regarded film festivals in New York.

Dominican Village’s Fall Frenzy Auction

Plans are well underway for Dominican Village’s annual Fall Frenzy Auction (formerly known as the Chinese Auction Extravaganza).

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings.
