8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk

The John Brower, Jr. Foundation, in partnership with Outreach, will host the 8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 1 (checkin begins at 9:00 a.m.).

The Walk was established by the Brower family (parents John, Sr. and Jody, and their children Kristen and Robert) in 2014 after they tragically lost their son John, Jr. to an opioid overdose in 2014. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic and the suppport needed to fight the problem that continues to devastate families and communities throughout Long Island. All funds raised support Outreach’s life-saving treatment programs and services for individuals and families.

The Walk along the historic Jones Beach Boardwalk serves as an ongoing tribute

to the memory of John Brower, Jr. and others who have been lost to the ongoing opioid crisis. The Walk offers information to inspire and educate the public about substance and alcohol use disorders and the treatment options available to them and their loved ones. How to Participate

The 8th Annual John Brower, Jr. 5K Heroes Against Heroin Walk will take place, rain, or shine. All are welcome - families, groups, and individuals.

NFPA Offers Safety Tips To Help Families Protect Themselves Against The Risks Of Electric Shock Drowning In Pools And At Marinas

With summer upon us, the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) is reminding people about potential electrical hazards that exist in swimming pools and hot tubs, onboard boats, on docks and piers, and in waters surrounding boats, marinas, and launch ramps.

While most people are unaware of electrical dangers posed in water environments such as electric shock drowning (ESD), each year people are injured or killed from these hazards. ESD can occur when improperly installed or maintained electrical systems within marinas or boat electrical systems result in electrical current in the water, which can then pass through a person’s body, causing a level of paralysis that can ultimately cause serious injury or drowning.

“Because ESD is not well known, NFPA continues to raise awareness about

the presence of electrical hazards in water to help prevent deaths and injuries from happening in pools and waterways,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach & Advocacy.

“Never swim near a marina, dock, or boatyard, and have a qualified electrician inspect your boat, swimming pool equipment, hot tub, and spa before engaging in any water activities to ensure all life-saving measures and protection systems are functioning properly.”

Following are tips for swimmers, and boat and pool owners: Swimmers

Never swim near a marina, dock, or boatyard.

While in a pool or hot tub look out for underwater lights that are not working properly, flicker, or work intermittently.

If you feel a tingling sensation while in a pool, immediately stop swimming

in the direction you are heading. Try and swim in a direction where you had not felt the tingling. Exit the water as quickly as possible; avoid using metal ladders or rails. Touching metal may increase the risk of shock.

Boat owners

Avoid entering the water when launching or loading a boat. These areas can contain stray electrical currents in the water, possibly leading to electric shock drowning or injury from shock, including death.

Each year, have the boat’s electrical system inspected by a qualified marine electrician to be sure it meets the required codes of your area, including those set by the American Boat & Yacht Council. Make the necessary repairs, if recommended. Follow the same steps after any major storm that affects the boat.

Check with the marina owner about the marina’s

electrical system and whether it has recently been inspected to meet the required codes of your area, including the National Electrical Code® (NEC®).

Have ground fault circuit protection (GFCI and GFPE) installed on circuits supplying the boat; use only portable GFCIs or shore power cords (including “Y” adapters) that bear the proper listing mark for marine applications when using electricity near water. Test GFCIs monthly.

NEVER modify the electrical system on a boat or shore power to make something work. The coderequired safety mechanisms in place are intended to alert people if something is wrong with the boat and with shore power. Find a licensed, qualified professional to help determine the cause of the problem.

Pool owners

If you are putting in a

new pool or hot tub, be sure the wiring is performed by an electrician experienced in the special safety requirements for these types of installations and that the completed work is inspected by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Have a qualified electrician periodically inspect and — where necessary — replace or upgrade the electrical devices or equipment that keep your pool or hot tub electrically safe. Have the electrician show you how to turn off all power in case of an emergency.

If there are overhead electrical lines, make sure they have proper clearance over the pool and other structures, such as a diving board. If you have any doubts, contact a qualified electrician or your local utility company to make sure power lines are a safe distance away.

Long Island, New York’s property taxes are among the highest in the nation. Here is some information to help to determine whether filing a tax grievance should be considered. Each township assesses each property in the town and establishes a residential assessment ratio (RAR). That assessed value establishes your annual town tax bill. If you take your total assessment found on your tax bill and divide it by the residential assessment ratio, that will provide the town’s opinion of the current market value of your

home. You will need to call the township for the RAR since it is town specific. If you find, after the calculation, that your home’s value is inflated, you should consider filing a grievance. A homeowner can do this personally or hire a grievance service for assistance. There are deadlines for filing and a call to the town will provide that information as well as the residential assessment ratio needed to do the calculation.

BSA TROOP 1421 GOES CAMPING - BSA Troop 1421 went camping at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in Calverton during the week of July 23. The scouts earned 35 merit badges in total and won the Honor Troop of the Week Award for week 3.

As A Village Celebrates 100 Years, A Family Celebrates 150

As someone who grew up in the Village of Lindenhurst, having graduated from its high school two years ago, I had seen the sign for the “H.F. Insurance Agency” many times. I gave it the same attention I did to every other business sign on Wellwood Avenue, which admittedly was not more than a glance. I was unaware of exactly what the Wrieth name meant to Lindenhurst. It wasn’t until recently that I heard the family’s story, learning that it had been here for 150 years. The Wrieths have been a fixture in the community ever since they arrived in the area that would eventually become known as Lindenhurst. As the Village celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, it is only right to celebrate this family whose history is longer than the Village’s own.

The family today can trace its roots back to a man named Gottlieb Wrieth, a German immigrant who came to New York City during the 1850s alongside many others set on achieving the American Dream. After a few years of running a grocery store out of New York City, Gottlieb moved to the “Breslau Cooperative Building Association”, the area that would later become incorporated as the Village of Lindenhurst. Gottlieb opened a grocery store on the corner of Wellwood Avenue and Cemetery Road (now Newark Street), starting the Wrieth’s 150 years in Lindenhurst.

In 1885 Gottlieb opened a hotel and grocery store with a liquor department on the northeast corner of Wellwood and Hoffman Avenue, where the Village Square and its gazebo stand today. This business served customers for miles around and quickly became an icon of the burgeoning community. While I am not old enough to have seen the hotel myself, knowing

it was in a location I pass by every day offers a small connection to a piece of my home’s history.

The commitment to serving the people of the community that Gottlieb showed through his business ventures in the service industry continued with his children. His eldest son Louis F. Wrieth would inherit his father’s business as well as start the famous Wrieth Band. Louis organized and led the band entertaining thousands across Long Island from 1901 until Louis’ death in 1925. The band’s drums were recently restored, as is necessary after over 100 years of life. This restoration coincided with the Village of Lindenhurst ramping up its campaign to revitalize its downtown, the drums acting as a symbol of the Village itself.

Henry Wrieth, another of Gottlieb’s seven children, operated a business in Lindenhurst just as his brother and father did. He operated a barbershop on Wellwood Avenue north of the family hotel, opening its doors in 1918. Henry and his barbershop are remembered for serving the community with a smile and his charming, eccentric manner. He married Margaret Fuller, whose family ran another famous Lindenhurst business: the Fuller Brewery.

Henry’s son Frederick “Oscar” Wrieth would take the Wrieth family’s commitment to good public service to local government. He began his career in 1927 when he was appointed clerk to thenBabylon Town Supervisor Joseph Warta. Oscar would occupy this position for five more Town Supervisors over the course of the next forty years. He also served as Town Comptroller, a Village Trustee, and as Village Treasurer during this time. Outside of local government, Oscar joined the Village Fire Department where he helped create its

Chemical Rescue Company and participated in the Department’s running team.

His son Henry Frederic Wrieth took after his grandfather and greatgrandfather, opening a business of his own on Wellwood Avenue just as they had. In 1962 he started the H.F. Insurance Agency, a business that just last year celebrated its 60th anniversary. As is common with the Wrieths, Henry did much more than just operate a business. He served with the Village Fire Department’s Rescue Company and running team, served as Babylon Deputy Town Supervisor from 1971-1973, and served the Suffolk County GOP for over 60 years as a Committeeman and as its chairman.

The H.F. Insurance Agency became a family business when Henry’s son James joined him in the 1990s. James ran the high school’s wrestling club, raising thousands of dollars for the expansion of Lindenhurst High School’s wrestling room. He was awarded the Board of Education’s Yale Award in 2012, an honor they bestow upon someone who demonstrates outstanding service to the school community. James currently works as the “chief” of the H.F. Insurance Agency, with his son Alec working beside him to continue the legacy.

The Wrieth Family’s ties to Lindenhurst are older than the Village itself, and it continues to march on the familiar beat of its drum as it always has. Since the 1870s the Wrieths have served the Lindenhurst community in one way or another offering good business, musical entertainment, and government administration. Through it all they have bettered the lives of those around them and Lindenhurst continues to graciously benefit from their work. The family

exemplifies the American Dream, inheriting the work ethic of a man who left his home country to start a new,

better life in an unfamiliar land. Honoring people like the Wrieths who have helped shape the Village

since before incorporation is an important part of celebrating its 100th year of governance.

Continues Its Diamond Jubilee Year Celebration

In Conjunction With The Village Of Lindenhurst’s Centennial Celebration, The Society Plans A Series Of Events Celebrating 75 Years Of Continuous Stewardship Of The Village Of Lindenhurst’s Rich And Diverse History

The Lindenhurst Historical Society is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee Anniversary this year commemorating 75 years of continuous stewardship of the Village of Lindenhurst’s rich and diverse history. Coordinating its 75th Anniversary celebration with that of the Village of Lindenhurst Centennial anniversary, the Society announced at its June 28th, 2023 75th Anniversary meeting an upcoming series of events to be held throughout this extraordinary anniversary year and in conjunction with the Village.

On September 17th, in celebration of the Village’s German origins, the Society will be hosting its inaugural Volksmarch. Volksmarching was founded in Germany over 50 years ago. Participants are invited to stroll through the Village stopping at designated historically relevant sites. The non-competitive walk is approximately 3 miles in length and can be easily traversed at a leisurely gait. At each designated stop, participants will be given recognition for completing the stop and all participants completing the entire route will receive a commemorative medal to indicate they successfully completed the walk. There is a registration fee for the event and pre-registration is recommended. The Volksmarch is being held in conjunction with the Lindenhurst Fire Department Breslau Engine Company’s Germanfest. Both events are being held in tribute to the Village’s 100th Anniversary of Incorporation Celebration. The walk will begin and end at Firemen’s Park Pavilion and will take place from 9 AM to 2 PM. Pre-registration will be available by contacting the Lindenhurst Historical Society on its Facebook page at Lindy Breslau or by emailing the Society at Lindenhursthistoricalsociety@gmail. com. The pre-registration fee for individuals is $13 and $18 for families. Day of event registration is $15 for individuals and $20 for families. All pre-registered participants will need to report to the pavilion to obtain their registration materials. Collectible commemorative medals will be awarded at the conclusion of the walk at Firemen’s Pavilion. One medal will be awarded to each participant and to each family participating. Additional medals can be purchased for $10.

The Breslau Engine Company’s Germanfest will follow immediately at 2 PM at the Pavilion and participation in the Volksmarch includes admission to the Germanfest.

On September 30th, the Lindenhurst Historical Society, in tribute to the Villages’ 100th Anniversary celebration, will sponsor a day of baseball including a charity tournament and featuring an historic reenactment of the famous 1930 exhibition game played in Lindenhurst between Addie Klein’s Lindenhurst Nine, an amateur

baseball club, and the Yankee’s Babe Ruth along with other professional players including Lou Gehrig. Long storied as the day Babe Ruth came to Lindenhurst, the barnstorming Yankees, and the locals played in front of a larger crowd assembled at the Meridale Baseball Park. Much to the chagrin of local residents, the Lindenhurst Nine lost 10-4. For the commemorative game, local teams from Lindenhurst and Lindenhurst High School will reenact the game from that long ago Saturday afternoon. The entire day’s events will be played at the Lindenhurst ball field just south of Feller’s Pond and adjacent to the Lindenhurst Remembers’ September 11th Memorial Garden. Later in the fall, on October 28th the Lindenhurst Historical Society will continue to celebrate the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst’s 100th Anniversary by sponsoring a self-guided tour of Breslau Cemetery, highlighting the graves of Lindenhurst’s Civil War Veterans--- some of which were present at Appomattox, witnesses to General Lee’s surrender to General Grant that ended the 4 year long American Civil War. To help visitors envision what life was like for Civil War soldiers, veterans, and civilians, the 119th New York Willis Company H. Civil War living historians along with Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) re-enactors will be on hand to provide context and authenticity to help educate and inform visitors about the

Lightning Warriors To Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon

Lightning Warriors, a notfor-profit youth triathlon team, will be hosting its 4th annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon on Sunday September 17, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, New York. This year’s Mini Maniac event will be geared toward triathletes of all levels between the ages of 7 and 17. While all racers will be participating in a youth triathlon, races will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim

and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.

“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.

All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and postrace refreshments.

triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more selfesteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”

Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate

confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.

As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions.
