About Long Island’s Own Buddy Merriam: Buddy Merriam and Back Roads were formed in 1980 out of Buddy’s love and respect for traditional Bluegrass music. He became close friends with the Father of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, and got to learn from and eventually perform with him. In September of 2015 Buddy was honored to receive the “Long Island Sound Award” from the LI Music Hall of Fame “For Outstanding Contributions to Long Island’s Musical Heritage.” He has brought Back Roads down to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to perform a few times, and they’ve also performed at the grand opening of the Bluegrass Museum and Hall of Fame in Owensboro, KY and Country Music’s Fan Fair in Nashville, TN. The group has played at most of the Bluegrass Festivals in the northeastern U.S., including Grey Fox and Podunk, and at several Long Island venues, such as Hecksher Park in Huntington, Bald Hill Cultural Center, Agawam Park in Southampton, and has headlined concerts for LITMA (the Long Island Traditional Music Association), the Huntington Folk Music Society and the Museums at Stony Brook Folk & Fiddle Festival.Buddy Merriam’s involvement in the Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival dates back to its beginnings. He has graced the stage at Tanner Park many times throughout the festival’s 20 years, and is a crowd favorite whenever he plays. Blood Emergency: Blood And Platelet Donors Urgently Needed New York Blood Center (NYBC) recently announced a blood emergency, as the region’s ongoing heatwave, summer travel, and a recent spike in COVID-19 cases have caused a significant decrease in donations over the past several weeks. Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of donors to receive life-saving blood donations, but these factors have caused the blood supply to become unstable. The blood supply currently stands at a 1-2-day level, which is well below the ideal level of NYBC5-7-days.ispartnering with local breweries for their “Pint for a Pint” campaign, which runs from August 1st – September 10th at all donor centers and community blood drives. Waterfront Natural Systems Resiliency Improvements Project
Shore Road
The Village of Lindenhurst was the recipient of a grant, funded by New York Rising, for the establishment of a natural, storm-resilient, living shoreline of over 555’ at the southern tip of Shore Road Park. The project included building a stone wall barrier at the edge of the shoreline to help reduce wave energy, back-filling behind the sill to help restore the salt marsh area that had been lost due to erosion, as well as the planting of over 30,000 salt-marsh plants. The project will assist with erosion control, help ameliorate storm surge intrusion, and reduce the effects of wave action along Shore Road Park, as well as the immediate surrounding residential area.Mayor Lavorata said, “The Shore Road Waterfront Natural Systems Resiliency Improvements Project is a major improvement to our Shore Road shoreline. However, the success of the living shore line at the beach front depends upon thriving salt marsh vegetation.”Village Administrator Clerk Douglas Madlon added, “As we work to reduce our carbon footprint, we also recognize the need to become more resilient in the face of climate change, as it is already happening. Our Village’s Natural Systems Resiliency Improvements Project is a shining example of what we can do to improve our environment.”
