Dawn McGrath Of Over 700 Painted Lady Butterflies Educational Bus Transportation Released Pinelawn Memorial Receives Golden Merit Award From NSTA Park and Arboretum Lindenhurst resident Dawn McGrath, an Operations Manager with Educational Bus Transportation in Copiague, recently received The Golden Merit Award from the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) at its annual meeting and convention in Niagara Falls, New York.

Established in 1969, NSTA’s Golden Merit Award recognizes school bus employees for their achievements in safety, driver training, business practice, vehicle maintenance, and superior service to their school district, community, and pupil transportation industry.

“Dawn McGrath is a consummate professional who possesses the skills and ability that are

paramount to excellence in student transportation,” stated Chloe Williams, Co-Chair of the NSTA Awards Committee. “It gives me great pleasure to present her with The Golden Merit Award for her many contributions to Educational Bus Transportation and the school districts that benefit from her expertise.”

McGrath began her career in 1988 as a school bus driver with Educational Bus Transportation before moving on to dispatcher and eventually serving as Operations Manager.

Trans Group President John Corr added, “Dawn is an enthusiastic leader who exemplifies all that the Golden Merit Award stands for — a commitment to excellence on the job and a steadfast dedication to

the drivers and students who depend on her.

recently released 700 Painted Lady butterflies at its annual Butterfly Release, aimed to educate Long Islanders on the benefits the beloved insects bring to the environment, as well as support the species.

Led by Fred Hoffmann, Pinelawn’s Grounds Supervisor, who manages the 500-acre property, over 300 community members gathered on Sunday, July 17 in the park’s vibrant Rose Garden to learn more about how these beautiful pollinators contribute to the park’s landscape.

“Beyond the butterflies’ obvious beauty, they also play a pivotal role in supporting the landscape,” said Fred Hoffmann, Grounds Supervisor, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “Butterflies act as important pollinators that allow our many gardens, and those of the surrounding community, to prosper.

In return, we make an effort to support the species by providing an optimal environment for them, including milkweed, echinacea (Purple Coneflower), and over 24 acres of natural meadows.”

As part of an ongoing program offering free events for Pinelawn families and the Long Island community, the organization recognizes the significance of butterflies among the bereaved.

Kristyn Hovanec, Director of Community Outreach at Pinelawn, “Butterflies have long been a symbol of those we love who have passed on. This event not only educates the families about the importance of butterflies within our ecosystem, but also allows them to feel connected to those they are missing.”

Pictured is 7 year-old Gideon Davila and his mother, Arlene, both from Lindenhurst, who joined over 300 other Long Islanders for the July 17th educational event. event which included fun butterfly arts & crafts for the children, Pinelawn also visited The Bristal Assisted Living in Massapequa on Friday, July 15, where 45 residents and their families learned about the butterflies and released butterflies into The Bristal’s gardens.

A special session was also held for residents of The Bristal’s Reflections Memory Care Residents.

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way.

The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised.

This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings.

You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. These are just a few ways homeowners can prepare for storm season. If you need to upgrade or replace any part of your home’s exterior call UNIFIED.

Babylon IDA’s Economic Inclusion Initiative Is Proof Of Progress Program Supporting MWBEs With Training And Resources Sets Example For The State expand this program locally while regions throughout the state can launch similar programs so we can really make some progress on this front statewide.”

Since its launch in the fall of 2020, the initiative has guided the development of nearly 30 aspiring or existing business owners who were looking for direction amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

From a financial perspective, the program has helped business owners secure nointerest loans while also improving access to capital by creating supporting crowdfunding and micro-lending. Technical assistance has also been provided to address sales and profit deficiencies, closure rates and other barriers to business growth while overseeing partnerships with foundations and universities to provide capacity building.

Additionally, the initiative has helped many business owners acquire MWBE certification by providing assistance in acquiring necessary certification and bonding while also promoting partnerships between Town and minority consultants, contractors,

A cornerstone of the effort was the Storefront Development Pilot Program, seeking to improve occupancy rates in underutilized business districts while also providing small business owners with affordable space needed to advance their businesses. Two local entrepreneurs have already taken advantage of this program and both have seen an increase in revenue, sales and hiring. There are two more businesses going through the process to take advantage of the successful pilot program.

“The Economic Inclusion Initiative is a crucial initiative to bridge the gap between an entrepreneur’s vision, implementation and sustained success,” said

NAACP LI Regional Director Tracey Edwards.

“The program aims to remove all obstacles, close the revenue gap, and create more paths of entrepreneurship through innovation and partnership. What the Babylon IDA has launched is an effective model of a community-driven strategy that should be used across New York State.”

Contributing greatly to this development has been an ongoing series of educational events and training resources for business owners. This fall, the initiative will host a bootcamp series focusing on business development and social media marketing.

There are also numerous B2B Minority, Women and Veteran networking event series being planned to help entrepreneurs make the business connections that can support and elevate their businesses. The tremendous success of the IDA’s Economic Inclusion Initiative has helped it set a new standard of what IDAs throughout New York State can do to ensure that minority, women and veteran business owners are able to thrive in our state. The Babylon IDA is hopeful and encouraged that two other IDA’s in the state have reached out to learn more about replicating this program in their region.

In the two years since the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) launched its Economic Inclusion Initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort has grown into a model of success for others to follow.

The program, which is aimed at supporting and elevating Minority, Women and Veteran Business Enterprise entrepreneurs within the Town of Babylon, has helped dozens of dedicated entrepreneurs connect to financial, technical and legal assistance, with many starting new businesses or getting MWBE certified in the process.

Food-Insecure Seniors Are The Focus Of Fair Sponsored By Long Island Cares And PSEG Long Island Long Island ‘s foodinsecure seniors are the focus of the Senior Resource Fair taking place Friday, August 12 at Long Island Cares’ Center for Community Engagement in Hauppauge. Childcare To Become More Affordable For Many Low And Moderate Income Families

Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services.

“A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”

According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State.

“I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt

your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Childcare is an essential service, and in New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to make sure more working families have access to it.”

Parents can be eligible if they are employed and earn no more than the 300 percent threshold, are enrolled in an education or training program, in mental

health or substance abuse treatment, or are in an emergency situation of short duration. For example, a family of four can earn up to $83,250 annually and still be eligible for subsidized childcare.

This organization thrives because of its volunteers, who do the heavy lifting of taking care of the emotional and tangible needs of families who depend on their hospitality while their child receives life-saving medical treatment.

North Shore Animal League America has a wide variety of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to choose from. That special pet is waiting just for you!

Ruth Signorelli of Sayville, NY has volunteered with RMHC at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for the last two-plus years, pushing the colorful “Hospitality à la Carte” cart, delivering much-needed toiletries, snacks, games, books and toys to parents and children in their hospital room. Always arriving at “just the right time”, the volunteers and treats on the cart give an added boost of joy to the day!

OPEN DAILY FOR ADOPTIONS:

Ruth calls it “the most rewarding work I’ve ever done” - but the program still needs more people like her to keep the love flowing.

“We need more volunteers, plain and simple,” says Matt Campo, CEO of Ronald McDonald House NY Metro, which runs the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park and is working toward enhancing their presence in Suffolk County. “Kids and their families count on the volunteers to help them through some of their hardest days.”

“I’m like the stranger on the bus,” says Ruth. “Parents of these kids can just sit with me and talk - just dump all their

emotions out and then I can go get them a cup of coffee or something to eat. We even do their laundry; we have facilities where they can shower. It’s simple but some days it’s what they need most.”

Currently, RMHC is looking to fill 100 volunteer positions, in New Hyde Park at Cohen’s Children Hospital and in Stony Brook at the Children’s Hospital there. Do you think you’d be a great volunteer?
