Donating Blood

The Foods You Eat Could Affect Whether Or Not You Can Donate

The foods a person eats before attempting to donate blood could affect whether or not he or she is allowed to donate. According to the American Red Cross, its staff members routinely check the level of hemoglobin in donors’ blood and platelets before they accept donations. Hemoglobin is

a protein in the body that contains iron and gives blood its distinctive red color. Hemoglobin plays a vital role in human health, carrying oxygen from the lungs to nourish all of the tissues in the body. Hemoglobin levels are checked using fingersticks, and if hemoglobin levels are low, then donors will

be asked to wait to donate until their levels return to normal. So what does food have to do with hemoglobin? Iron is a part of hemoglobin and found in many of the foods a person eats. Iron helps people maintain their strength and energy, and it’s also necessary to help the body make new blood

cells to replace the ones that are lost through blood donations. The Red Cross encourages prospective donors to eat healthy foods that are rich in iron and high in vitamin C, as doing so can increase their chances of being accepted as blood donors and can aid in their recoveries after donating.

Vanessa Danese Achieves Eagle Scout Rank

On Saturday, June 17, 2023, Vanessa A. Danese became the first female in Troop 1421, Lindenhurst to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. To become an Eagle Scout, a Scout must be a Life Scout for at least six months, earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate Scout spirit, and demonstrate leadership within their

troop. Additionally, Eagle Scouts must also complete a public service project, and participate in a board review. As her Eagle Scout project, Vanessa helped to improve the environment in our Lindenhurst community by doing a creek clean-up, and installing several bat boxes, along an area of Little Neck Creek.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “No one around her doubted that Vanessa Danese would make it to the rank of Eagle Scout. Vanesa has demonstrated that Eagle Scout is so much more than a medal or an award; it means that you are a role model to your community. Vanessa is indeed a role model for the Lindenhurst community.”

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a free shop for Long Island children in need, is requesting donations of girls’ clothing, sizes 2 to 5. This outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City, assists more than 2500

children and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. “As we’ve set up our winter store, we are finding a gap in our

supply of clothing for little girls,” says Ethical Friends of Children Director Jim LoPresti of Massapequa Park.

Ethical Friends of Children, established in 1985, is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals, families, or

community groups donate gently used clothing and other things children may require, such as backpacks. Any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula.

Race To Save The Sea Turtles! 2023 Paddle Battle LI Event Saturday, July 29th

The New York Marine Rescue Center is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 2023 Paddle Battle LI Event on Saturday, July 29th along the Peconic River in Riverhead, NY. It’s a race to save the Sea Turtles! This family friendly event includes a 2.5-mile amateur race and a 5-mile competitive race course. First place medals will be offered to winners in each category, for each class

and distance. We also have our Casual Paddle! This is not a race it’s just a great way for family and friends to get together and paddle casually on the beautiful Peconic River!

There is also a great opportunity for companies, organizations and unions to participate in the “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.”

This 2.5 mile stand up paddle board and kayak race designed for teams of four

competitors to compete against one another for the Team Challenge trophy. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the bragging rights of winning the 2023 “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.”

All proceeds will go directly to the NY Marine Rescue Center, a not-forprofit 501c3 to help them save the Sea Turtles!

Registration starts at 7:30am on the Peconic Waterfront – Entry fees are $95/pp before the race day, or $105 on the event day. Rental canoes and kayaks are available for $40. 2023 Sandcastle Contest To Be Held At Hither Hills State Park

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 2023 Sandcastle Contest at Hither Hills State Park. The contest will be held each Thursday through August 31, 2023. Sand sculptors may use sand, water, and any other natural materials native to the beach.

Prizes are provided by the Natural Heritage Trust, the program’s sponsor. Each week’s prizes will be awarded for the best sculptors and castles in

several categories.

Registration is held each Thursday 9:30AM at Hither Hills State Park Visitors Center. A $10.00 Vehicle Use Fee will be in effect.
