An All-Star Season For Lindenhurst H.S. Varsity Baseball

The Lindenhurst High School Varsity Baseball team recently completed an outstanding 18-win season. They made it to the Conference 1 Finals, where they lost to powerhouse Commack.

Lindenhurst had five players honored with various awards given by the Suffolk County Baseball Coaches Association.

Donny Whalen, who batted .438, with a .561 on base percentage and 28 RBI, was honored as an All-League player. Steve Hernandez, voted Most Versatile by his teammates, as he played six different positions, had a .400 on base percentage, and was named All-League.

Catcher Max Frank had a .354 batting average, .447 on base percentage, with 28 RBI and 4 homeruns and was named All-League. An honor student, Max was also named to the Suffolk County All-Academic team. Chris Carson was named first team All-County for the second

consecutive year. He was also named First Team All-Long Island by Newsday! Chris had phenomenal hitting and pitching statistics. He batted .585, with a .694 on base percentage with 32 RBI and 34 runs scored. He added 20 stolen bases in the regular

season. His dramatic 2 run homerun in the last inning gave Lindenhurst a 3 – 1 playoff win vs. West Islip. As a pitcher, he had 6 wins and zero loses with 75 strikeouts in 42 innings. Chris won a Gold Glove from the SCBCA and played in the Suffolk/

Nassau All-Star Game where he had two hits. Finally, Thomas Charlwood excelled for the Bulldogs. Thomas batted .551, with a .671on base percentage, as he was named First Team AllCounty. He was also honored as a First Team All-Long

Island player by Newsday. He had 7 homeruns, nineteen extra base hits, 43 runs scored and 31 RBI. His sixth inning homerun tied the score at one in a playoff game vs. Northport. He did all this after rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery

in the fall. In addition to his All-County status, Thomas won the Bonin Courage Award and garnered the prestigious Suffolk County Silver Slugger Award which is given to the top hitter in the county! Thomas also represented Lindenhurst in the Nassau/Suffolk All-Star game and had a base hit. Senior Ty Napoleon came back from an injury to hit .350 and .400 in the playoffs. He earned the team’s Prime Time Player Award and the Lindenhurst American Little League scholarship. Senior Adam Herig, last year’s Team Man Award winner, made several outstanding plays in right field during the year, and earned a Bulldog Baseball Scholarship. It was quite a season for the Lindenhurst team and their All Stars. It was the first time since 2010 that Lindenhurst had two First Team All-Long Island baseball players. Congratulations to all the Bulldog Baseball players for a home run of a season.

Mid-Year Review: How Are You Doing?

It seems like yesterday that we were throwing confetti, tooting horns, and saying goodbye to 2022. Today, we are just about halfway done with 2023. That means…it’s time for a midyear review.

I do love this time of the year. It’s a great opportunity to evaluate my progress both in business and my personal life. A midyear review is not just a list of tasks accomplished or goals to reach; it’s a chance to look at the path we are on in our businesses and personal lives and make changes while we still can.

In business, whether it’s your own or you work for a company, a midyear review can give you a clear picture of performance against the goals that you set at the start of the year. Done correctly, you can measure financials, evaluate strategies, and determine how happy your customers are with your

product or service. It also allows you to check in with your employees, partners, and suppliers. Are they motivated and inspired, or do they appear disengaged. This week is the best time to ask them what they need to achieve their goals in the second half of the year. Teamwork makes the dream work!

At the same time, it’s important to do a personal review. How are you feeling? What’s keeping you up at night? What are the biggest

challenges that are in front of you? The balance between work and personal life is critical to success for both parts of your life! You can’t pay your personal bills if business is bad, and you can’t succeed in business if you become disabled.

If you claim that you don’t have time for your health, hobbies, and relationships, find the time! If you’ve been thinking about learning a new language, reading more books, or joining a running club, do it!

If you’ve had success reaching your midyear milestones, make sure you take time to celebrate!

The recognition you give to yourself and the people around you will fuel your motivation and selfconfidence going forward.

As I said, I love this time of year because it reminds me of how fortunate I am, and we all are, to live on Long Island in the summertime.

King Kullen Helps Fund Summer Camp Programs For Disadvantaged Long Island Children

King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc., has donated $10,000 to benefit summer camp programs for disadvantaged children in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, a tradition begun by King Kullen more than three decades ago. The donation will be divided evenly between Family & Children’s Association (Nassau County) and Family Service League (Suffolk County).

“Camp provides a stimulating and fun environment where children can learn new activities and meet other children their age,” observed King Kullen President and Chief Operating Officer Joseph W. Brown. “King

Kullen’s gift will help fund scholarships for children whose families lack the resources for summer camp. Additionally, customers who want to make a difference can participate in our annual ‘Send A Kid to Camp’ campaign this summer by scanning $5, $2, or $1 coupons at the register at all King Kullen and Wild by Nature stores.”

Family and Children’s Association President and CEO Jeffrey Reynolds stated, “The gifts we receive from individuals and corporations like King Kullen make it possible for us to provide these wonderful experiences for Long Island’s young people. We thank King

Serendipity: A Special Creative Forum For Breast Cancer Patients, Survivors And Caregivers On July 11

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a free guided art adventure for breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers to light their creative sparks by making art through a variety of different techniques and mediums. The inperson workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 11 from 10 am to 11:30 am at Adelphi University in Garden City (room details will be provided upon registration).

“Participants are encouraged to experiment with art and trust their imaginations,” says Kimberly Newman, BFA, the Marketing and Communications

Coordinator, for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, who will be offering a variety of different techniques and mediums during this forum.

Co-facilitating is social worker Angela M. Papalia, LMSW, Assistant Director, Adelphi Breast Cancer Program who says that learning and practicing different breathing exercises will be part of the session. “These exercises will teach you how to disengage from distracting thoughts and sensations,” she says. Breathing exercises have many health benefits such as improving immunity, calming down anxiety, increasing

sleep quality, improving cardiovascular health, aiding in concentration, reducing inflammation, strengthening lungs and more.

The Junior Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, the Marilyn Lichtman Foundation and Northwell Health Cancer Institute are co-sponsors. Registration is required to attend this free forum and space is limited to 40 participants. Art supplies will be provided for all exercises.
