A Message From Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata

I want to offer congratulations to the Lindenhurst High School Class of 2023! We wish you all great success as you begin your next journey, and may you carry your “Lindy Pride” with you wherever you go!

It would not have been the beginning of summer without the Lindenhurst Memorial Day Parade, honoring Americans who died while serving in the armed forces. Thank you to the brave men and women who served and sacrificed to preserve our freedom.  My thanks to the Lindenhurst Veterans of Foreign War and United Veterans Council, and all who participated in this year’s parade. The parade featured veterans, community and service clubs marching, along with the Lindenhurst High School & Middle School Marching Bands, and the Lindenhurst Fire Department.

This year’s parade also honored three Grand Marshals representing veterans that fought in WWII- Joseph Randazzo, the Korean War- Thomas Aloisi, and the Vietnam WarCommander Thomas Kelly. I hope everyone enjoyed the parade, and had a restful and enjoyable Memorial Day

weekend.

It would also not be summer in Lindenhurst without our FREE Summer Concert Series! Most every Friday & Saturday night, and including some Sundays, this summer, beginning at 7:30 pm, great music for all will be presented at the Village Square Park Gazebo. Bring a lawn chair, and visit one of our fine Downtown restaurants for some food and drink before the show! The series kicks off on Friday, June 23th with a comedy night and Saturday June 24th with “Day Trippers,” a Beatles tribute band. Finally, a lot of good things have been happening in Lindenhurst these past few months including the Lindenhurst Fire Department’s 184th installation of newlyelected officers: Chief of the Department David Collins, First Assistant Chief Robert Santos, Second Assistant Chief Jonathan Cutolo; Third Assistant Chief David Brink; Secretary Charles Vozzo and Treasurer Sarah Marie Callahan. Also, a big thank you to outgoing Chief Michael DeGregorio for his many years of selfless

service to the Lindenhurst community.

I might also point out, in an effort to keep Lindenhurst Fire Department’s life-saving response fast and effective, the Village has hired two fulltime Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). The EMT’s are first responders who are trained in basic medical knowledge and skills to provide immediate medical care to residents in an emergency. They are often the first Lindenhurst Fire Department emergency service providers to arrive on the scene of a crisis, such as an accident, medical emergency, fire or natural disaster. An EMT’s responsibility is to provide basic and emergency medical care to stabilize the person in crisis before transporting them to a hospital where they can be further assisted by a physician.

There are so many more good things going on in our Lindenhurst Community -- too many for me to write in this month’s Mayor’s Message. However, stay tuned, I will be writing again next month to keep all our residents up to date.

Once again, I am humbled and proud to serve as your Mayor.

Lindenhurst Historical Society Diamond Jubilee Celebration

The Lindenhurst Historical Society will hold its Spring 2023 General Membership meeting on Wednesday, June 28th beginning at 7:30PM at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Center. This year, the Lindenhurst Historical Society is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee Anniversary. Lindenhurst Historical Society President Krista Jo Merget will preside and announce the Society’s celebratory plans. The evening’s historical presentation titled “A Lindenhurst Legacy -Traveling thru 75 years of Historical Society

History” will be presented by Lindenhurst Village

Historian Anna Jaeger. In 1948, Village Historian Lorena Frevert inspired fellow residents to imagine a vibrant and robust Society of likeminded and community oriented visionaries who would perpetually foster the society’s core mission to preserve and celebrate the community’s rich and diverse history. They also endeavored to continually seek and develop opportunities to conserve and protect the community’s historically valuable sites and as well as its historical objects, textiles, artworks

and artifacts. Village

Historian Anna Jaeger will retrace the steps those first members took and will recount what has transpired over the last 75 years for the Society and the Village as a result of their efforts.

• Strengthen your work ethic. Summer jobs can teach you valuable lessons about professionalism and resilience. Each job is an opportunity to learn new skills and build your network.

• Realize the power of local networking. Lindenhurst thrives on community connections. Attend local events, join professional organizations, and engage with local businesses. You’d be surprised how much a strong local network can help your career going forward.

Lindenhurst Student Artist Named Winner Of The Congressional Art Competition

Lindenhurst High School student Sierra Calderaro from Tara Biscardi’s photography class recently won the annual Congressional Art Competition for District 2. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries.

In recognition of this prestigious honor, Sierra’s work will be displayed at the United States Capitol for one year, and she is invited to the White House for a special luncheon to honor

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

LaMantia, Quinn Ryan and Katelyn Samuels had their photography work displayed at Artspace Gallery in Patchogue for the Congressional Art Contest.

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

Don’t Let Drones, Kites or Foil Balloons Spoil the Party

Between its beautiful weather and celebrations including graduations, Father’s Day and weddings, June is the time of year when outdoor spaces get crowded with drones, kites and metallic foil balloons. PSEG Long Island reminds customers that any of these objects can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems.

“While flying drones and kites can be fun and Mylar balloons are festive, if they come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Electric Operations. “The safety of customers and employees is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. We want customers

to know the risks and take steps to ensure their recreational activities and celebrations are a success.”

To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines:

• Fly your drone at or below 400 feet.

• Stay at least 200 feet away from power lines or other electrical equipment.

• Do not fly in dark, stormy or windy conditions

• Read and follow the drone manufacturer’s instructions to ensure the safety of your drone and people around you.

• Never fly kites or balloons in the rain or during an electrical storm.

• Never cross a road or street

while flying a kite or holding a balloon.

• Kites and Mylar balloons should be kept away from overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air.

• All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away.

• To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash.

• NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, kite, drone or anything caught in an overhead power line. Report it by contacting PSEG Long Island at 800490-0075 so a specially trained crew can safely address the issue.

Lindenhurst Resident Receives Leadership Award

St. Joseph’s University, New York recently presented this year’s Donald R. Boomgaarden Leadership in Action Award to Class of 2023 alumna Dana Storm ‘23, of Lindenhurst.

The award, named in honor of the University’s current president, recognizes graduating seniors who have embraced characteristics of positive leadership and have supported connections between various campus groups aimed to enhance the quality of student life.

Storm, who graduated as a psychology and human services double major with a 4.0 GPA, demonstrated leadership during her time at St. Joseph’s through her involvement as co-program director of Campus Activities Board, Orientation Team Leader, member of the LEAD program and a Peer Health Educator. She also received numerous awards and scholarships, and was a member of the Kappa Gamma Pi, Delta Epsilon Sigma and Gamma Tau Delta honor societies.

“Thank you to the board, the president and everyone behind this great event,” said Storm, who graduated with departmental honors in both psychology and human services. “It’s been an honor to attend and get to know each and every one of you, and it’s an honor to graduate from St. Joseph’s.”
