The Lindenhurst Historical Society invites one and all to return to summer days gone by; when Sunday afternoons were spent strolling in the park, serenaded with melodies like “In the Good Old Summertime” and lingering long enough to enjoy that perennial summer favorite— strawberry shortcake.

Back by popular demand, the Lindenhurst Historical Society is once again hosting its Old Tyme Summer Sundae Social on Sunday June 23, 2024 at the Lindenhurst Village Square from 1PM to 3PM. This year, strawberry shortcakes replete with vanilla ice cream and topped with whipped cream will be on sale for all to enjoy. Period costumed members of the Lindenhurst Historical Society will be on hand to

inform local history buffs, summer dessert aficionados and Sunday strollers about life in Lindenhurst during the 90s... that’s the 1890s and setting the mood will be Get Your Groove On DJ, providing period accurate music; the perfect accompaniment for viewing the Society’s historical photo display depicting Lindenhurst in days gone by.

Veronica Rusnak And Broc Brown Are At e Top Of eir Class

e Lindenhurst Union Free School District is proud to announce that Veronica Rusnak and Broc Brown are Lindenhurst High School’s Class of 2024 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

Veronica has a weighted GPA of 104.17. She has served on the executive board of the computer club, and taken part in the symphonic band, Varsity Cheerleading Team, Interact Club, and Environmental Club. She is looking to major in computer science in college. “It is rare to nd someone like Veronica who combines incredible intellect, the ability to connect with others, and a genuine passion for making a di erence in the world,” said her guidance counselor Mathew Ward. “Veronica’s academic achievements are nothing short of remarkable. However, what truly sets her apart is her unwavering determination and ability to maintain a positive attitude, even in the face of adversity.”

Broc has a weighted GPA of 104.06. He has served as National Honor Society President, Student Council Board Member, DECA Club President, captain of the Varsity Tennis Team, Peer Leadership program member, and as a volunteer youth ag football coach. Broc is also active in charity work, raising funds to donate football equipment to underserved communities. Broc plans to major in sports management at the University of Alabama. “Broc is a gi ed student and a strong minded, extremely mature individual,” said Ward. “When I think of Broc, I honestly cannot think of one negative characteristic. He is an incredibly bright, kind, caring, and respectful.”

Summer is a great time to enjoy recreational activities that take advantage of the great outdoors. This year summer arrives on June 20 with the summer solstice, which features the most hours of daylight of any day for the entire year. Celebrants who want to usher in another summer of fun in the sun can embrace these ideas for commemorating the start of summer.

Fun Ways To Celebrate The Summer Solstice

• Watch the sunrise. Get up early and watch the sun come up on the longest day of the year. Then be sure to catch the sunset to enjoy every minute of daylight.

• Host a cookout. Memorial Day, Canada Day and Independence Day get most of the barbecue glory this time of year. But there’s nothing that says the first day of summer shouldn’t

be a reason to gather friends and family for a cookout. June 20 falls on a Thursday this year, so the solstice provides the perfect excuse to take a four-day weekend and celebrate the official arrival of summer.

• Light a campfire. Traditional Midsummer’s Eve/summer solstice celebrations featured bonfires. Hold on to the tradition by

gathering people around a campfire or backyard firepit. S’mores make the perfect complement to a campfire scene.

• Grab some ice cream. Cool off on the summer solstice by visiting a nearby ice cream shop and indulge in a sundae or triple-decker cone.

• Go on a nature hike. Enjoy the great outdoors with a relaxing hike through a park or nature

trail.

• Participate in a beach clean-up. Make a beach trip even more enjoyable by signing up for a cleanup to clear the sand of litter. Organize an impromptu beach cleanup session either solo or with some like-minded friends.

• Pick fresh fruit. Many berries come into season in the summer. Head to a nearby pick-your-own

farm and grab fresh fruit to enjoy right away or utilize your pickings in recipes.

• Plant a flower garden. Clean up garden beds or go to the nursery and grab some colorful annuals to spruce up areas around the yard. The summer solstice is an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of summer and all the fun that comes with it.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a post-Covid reopening – a

reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for

on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/ donation coordination.

Lindenhurst is pleased to announce the newest community event – the Lindenhurst Farmers Market. The Farmers Market will be open Saturdays, 10:00AM –1:00PM, at Village Square Park, on the northeast corner of Wellwood & Hoffman Avenues, now through November 2nd.

Organized by local volunteer Darlene Fantel, the weekly event will welcome a variety of vendors selling locally-grown produce, homemade foods, baked goods, handmade crafts, jewelry and other unique items. The market will also sometimes feature live musical performances by local music artists. Come by and visit each week -- you never know what new treasures you will find!
