“The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.” As you read my words today, we are almost halfway through 2023. How did that happen? I feel like I am in an episode of Star Trek and Captain Kirk hit the Warp Speed button!

It’s ok though. I believe in the expression, “Time flies when you are having fun.”

I live in the best town on Long Island, I love the small businesses and residents here, and I’m having fun every day at my company. I can live with time flying by.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year, America’s VetDogs is celebrating their 20th anniversary!

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized not only the growing need for specialized service dogs that could help wounded service-members, but also that aging veterans could also benefit from a specially trained service dog. America’s VetDogs was then founded as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation and later became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. In 2015, first responders with work-related disabilities were added to the individuals served.

The Folks in the Village of Lindenhurst woke up to a Surprise the Friday before Memorial Day. 10 Employees combined, from Exit Family Realty and Valley Bank, had been seen by some on Thursday walking and waving up and down the streets placing bright American Flags on their lawns. Little did they know, the group had done

this for 1900 residents! A simple gesture the group wanted to do, just their way of saying... May we never forget the “Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.” One told of a wounded Veteran who stopped his car to ask if she was going to put one on his lawn a few blocks away? She handed him a flag right there and thanked him

for his service. He smiled with tears in his eyes as he drove away. Members of the group shared how they were greeted by so many who opened their doors and walked outside to say “Thank you” or “This means so much.” Their loved ones never forget and we honor their sacrifice by joining hearts across this Nation on Memorial Day.

Today, the organization supports those they serve with an uncompromised commitment to excellence, from highly empathetic and certified trainers to meticulously constructed curriculum delivered during a two-week, inresidence training program, followed by a lifetime of aftercare support. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but services are always provided free to the individuals served.

The dogs they train are taught specialized tasks and skills such as retrieval of dropped items, positional cues to extend their handler’s personal space when in a crowded setting, counterbalance, nightmare interruption, pressing buttons

The organization has many high-profile partnerships, which include NBC’s The Today Show, New York Islanders, New York Mets, Washington Capitals, Houston Texans, Contour Mortgage, Deloitte, and Voya. Their best known client was former President George H.W. Bush, who was matched with his service dog, Sully H.W. Bush, who is now a facility dog at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

No organization in the nation provides the depth of personalized services that America’s VetDogs o ers. They truly deliver the highest quality experience to those who served and continue to serve our nation with honor.

Pilot Traffic Changes On Catskill Avenue

Back in December 2022, the Village of Lindenhurst held a public informational meeting to discuss proposed traffic safety measures to make a section of Catskill Avenue, from 33rd Street to North Strong Avenue, a One-Way Traffic Only southbound street, and to stop southbound traffic onto Catskill Avenue from Sunrise Highway. Based

on feedback from local residents at that community meeting, the Village is now planning a “Pilot Program” to temporarily test the new proposed traffic changes.

THEREFORE, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that, beginning June 12, 2023, a roadblock will be installed southbound on Catskill Avenue at 40th Street, which will prohibit

southbound traffic exiting Sunrise Highway from using Catskill Avenue. Additionally, Catskill Avenue at North Strong Avenue will be closed off, prohibiting traffic from leaving North Strong Avenue onto Catskill Avenue and traffic from Catskill Avenue heading to North Strong Avenue. A roadblock will also be placed on the western side of Catskill Avenue at 32nd Street with a “NO OUTLET” sign so that traffic is aware there is no exit to North Strong Avenue. After July 3, the Village will schedule another public information meeting to solicit community feedback on the resulting pros and cons of this pilot program.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations.

I Trust You

I received a voicemail from someone this week who is thinking about selling her house. She’s lived in her home for many years and is a little nervous about the thought of leaving it. At the end of her message, she said something that made my day, and prompted me to write this article; she said, “Please give me a call back. I trust you.”

Hearing those three magical words puts this homeowner immediately into my “Friends and Family” book. I never want to lose someone’s trust in me. It is the highest compliment I can receive from someone else, professionally, or personally. Trust is often the difference between winning and losing in business. It takes time to build, but it can be lost in an instant.

There are five simple ways to build trust every day:

1) Be open and honest. If you are, people will be more likely to trust you.

2) Follow through on your promises. If you say you will do something, make sure you do it.

3) Listen. When you listen, others will feel like they’ve been heard and understood.

4) Be respectful. If you respect people, they are more likely to trust you.

5) Be consistent. When you are consistent, people will know what to expect from you, and they will be more likely to trust you.

As hard as it is to build trust, I have seen people lose it in a second. The easiest and quickest ways to break someone’s trust in you are lying, break your promise, ignore someone, be disrespectful, and be inconsistent. Once you lose trust, it’s almost impossible to get it back.

Regardless of the type of business you are in or the role you play in the company, the path to your success will be paved, repeatedly, by three simple words: I Trust You.

On May 25, 2023, supporters filled the Heritage Club at Bethpage for the 24th Annual Party for Life in Memory of Peter Careccia. The fundraiser benefits KiDS NEED MoRE, a local 501(c)(3) charity helping families cope with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

The event was founded by Dr. Joseph & MaryAnn Mills to help their friends, John & Kathy Careccia whose young son, Peter was struggling with a non-malignant spinal cord tumor. Peter passed away, but in his name, the Mills family and the Careccia family carried on his legacy through the Party for Life. To date, the event has raised nearly 3 million dollars for charity and has benefitted thousands of children.

This year’s donor/recipient meeting was facilitated by KiDS NEED MoRE President and founder, Melissa Firmes, who is herself a cancer survivor and stem cell recipient. KiDS NEED MoRE flew in the donor, Wojtek & his family all the way from Poland, and Steve Hiestand & his wife Nicole from Florida to meet for the very first time at the event. Melissa Firmes was able to connect the donor with Polonia of Long Island and Whoggga who speak Polish and were able to help support Wojtek and his family during their stay. The room was very emotional as Dr. Mills and MaryAnn presented Wojtek with the Peter Careccia Humanitarian Award for his selfless act of saving the life of Steve who had never even met. The two families embraced, and tears of joy and gratitude were shared. The hero’s welcome was followed by a duet sung

by American Idol and America’s Got Talent star Christian Guardino and local sensation CeeCee Castro. Christian struggles with a rare ocular disorder that would have left him blind were it not for recent advances in medicine. CeeCee is a cancer survivor, KiDS NEED MoRE Camp Adventure camper, and volunteer. The two singers rocked the house and helped kick off the celebration of life that followed.

Lisa Cazzola, a longtime dedicated volunteer and leader at KiDS NEED MoRE was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Forever 15 Award. The award is in memory of Cassandra Steinle who passed away at 15 years old from the effects of her treatment for leukemia. Every year, Cassandra’s parents John Steinle III & Eleanore Steinle along with her brother John Steinle IV choose an exemplary volunteer of the organization to receive

the honor.

The event was streamed on YouTube so that folks all around the world could witness the spectacular, life-changing moments live.

The fundraiser raised over $126,000 for the KiDS NEED MoRE Camp Adventure program a sleepaway camp in August for kids coping with cancer and their siblings. The camp is all volunteer run from the medical staff to the counselors and everything is free, including transportation.
