Art In The Park Fine Art & Craft Fair At Huntington’s Heckscher Park

After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, the Art League of Long Island is proud to bring back the Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4. Now in its 53rd year, this juried fair attracts thousands of discerning art lovers looking to purchase unique, one-of-a-kind

art and craft to display in their homes or to wear as fashion statements. More than 80 artists and craftspeople will show and sell original works of art and handmade crafts such as paintings, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, glasswork, photography, fiber art, wearable art and more. Prizes will be awarded to exhibitors

who demonstrate superior artistry and craftsmanship. The event will also feature live art demonstrations by Art League instructors, family-friendly hands-on activities, and live music. A raffle will run throughout the weekend, the winner to be announced the following week. Proceeds will benefit the Art League of Long Island, a

not-for-profit visual arts organization serving the community since 1955. This rain or shine event will be open to the public 10am and close at 5pm both days. The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF goes above and beyond to keep the love of music alive and well for students. One of the ways they do so is through aligning with the TeachRock program.

Launched by Stevie Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen, this program provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, language arts and more. Nearly 60,000 educators representing all 50 states are registered at Teachrock.org. The program aspires to:

•Keep the arts in the DNA of school systems

•Empower teachers with a methodology to engage young students

•Create inclusive spaces through the arts by providing teachers well researched, abundanceframed classroom resources featuring positive representations of all Americans

Wrong-Way Parking Enforcement

Have you ever gone for a walk in your neighborhood and gotten frustrated by the sight of motor vehicles parked in the wrong direction? Have you ever almost driven into a vehicle pulling out from the curb because it was parked facing the wrong way on the street? These are common issues that plague many areas of our Village, and have become increasingly prevalent.

New York Vehicle and Traffic Law - Section 1203 (Additional Parking Regulations) and Lindenhurst Village Code - Vehicles and Traffic, Chapter 185-83 (Additional Parking Regulations) state, “every vehicle stopped, standing or parked upon a two-way roadway shall be so stopped, standing or parked with the righthand-wheels of such vehicle parallel to and within twelve inches (12”)

of the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.”

In short, on a two-way roadway, as well as on oneway roadways, vehicles stopped, standing, or parked must be facing in the direction of authorized traffic movement on the portion of the roadway on which the vehicle rests.

When someone parks their vehicle facing oncoming traffic, or parks against the flow of traffic, the safety of others and themselves is at risk. First, on a two-way roadway, you need to drive into the wrong side of the road to park facing traffic. Secondly, when you are parked facing traffic, pulling out into head-ontraffic is dangerous. You might not be able to see cars coming towards you while pulling out, due to a blind spot from vehicles parked the right way in front of you.

In summary, you must park parallel to, and within twelve inches (12”) of, the right hand curb or edge of the roadway. If you park illegally against the flow of traffic, it is a parking violation, and could result in a parking ticket starting at $75.00.

The Village of Lindenhurst is committed to the safety of our residents, and their quality of life. Therefore, in an effort to keep the problem of cars illegally facing the wrong direction of traffic on our Village roadways under control, please be advised that the Lindenhurst Code Enforcement & Public Safety Officers will be enforcing this traffic law more strictly, and will continue issuing summonses to violators.

We ask that everyone be a good neighbor and park your car on the right side of the road.

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst awarded six deserving students from Lindenhurst High School with awards on Thursday, May 18th at its annual Scholarship Dinner. Those recognized by the club are Sinead Buckley, Leah Eastwood, Riley Colford, Klaudia Frankowski, Arianna Agnoli and Christian Hutter.

This year, the Tony Lazio & Larry Troiano Memorial Scholarship Fund, named in honor of two founding members of the club, were awarded to Sinead Buckley and Leah Eastwood.

Ms. Buckley plans to major in communications and musical theater at Loyola University in Chicago.

Ms. Eastwood plans to study video production and psychology at Pace University.

The William Jubak & Richard Heuwetter Key Club Scholarship Fund

is named in honor of the first Key Club advisors. These awards were given to Riley Colford and Klaudia Frankowski. Ms. Colford is the school’s valedictorian and Key Club president. She plans to attend the University of Delaware and major in economics.

Ms. Frankowski plans to become a physician assistant and is enrolled at Hofstra University’s Physical Assistant Studies program.

Nives Hoffmann Lozito was an elementary school teacher at the Daniel Street school and dedicated her life to teaching children to read. The award named for her is given to a student who plans a career in elementary education. Arianna Agnoli will be attending St. Joseph’s University in Patchogue and will study elementary education.

A new award was created and named

the Hon. Arthur M. Cromarty Hometown Heroes Scholarship. Hon. Justice Arthur M. Cromarty was a founder of the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst, a veteran of World War II, and a leader in Suffolk County government. Christian Hutter is the first recipient of this award. He is the Captain and Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Junior ROTC at his school. He plans to attend St. John’s University and major in Homeland Securities with a minor in Governmental Studies.

Since 1960, the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst has awarded over $500,000 to high school seniors in furtherance of its mission to improve the world one child and one community at a time. Each award is for $2,000 over a five year period of study.

LaLota Announces Hundreds Of Defense Jobs Coming To Suffolk County

Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01) announced that hundreds of new jobs would be coming to Suffolk County after Raytheon Technologies Corporation was awarded a contract by the federal government totaling $113,628,201. The contract will cover costs for Raytheon to develop MK 15 closein weapon system (CIWS) upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and

associated hardware. One of the manufacturing facilities Raytheon will use for this contract is located in Hauppauge, N.Y.

“I am thrilled that hundreds of high-paying defense manufacturing jobs will be coming to Suffolk County. As the son of a former Grumman Secretary and a Navy Veteran, I understand how important the defense industrial base

is to local families and Long Island’s economy,” said LaLota. “Now, as a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the strategic role Long Island’s defense manufacturing base plays in ensuring America’s military can deter the next conflict, or if needed, win it. I will always work to make sure that Suffolk County maintains our important role in our nation’s defense.”

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in

support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers

for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the five-year life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need for skilled workers,

according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,”

Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.

VILLAGE EMPLOYEE CELEBRATES 90TH BIRTHDAY - The Rainbow Senior Citizens Center had a special celebration honoring 25-year Village employee Irene Delfino on her 90th birthday. It is not every day that a Lindenhurst resident turns 90-years old, and it is certainly a special occasion when the resident is also a dedicated employee. Ms. Delfino, currently the Rainbow Senior Citizens Center “Coffee Lady”, has selflessly served the Village of Lindenhurst for 25 years. The Rainbow Seniors celebrated Irene’s milestone with a surprise birthday cake, balloons, flowers, and a proclamation from the Village Board designating May 14th, 2023 as “Irene Delfino Day” in the Village of Lindenhurst. Class Debate Leads To Understanding Of The American Revolution

Students in Patricia Swanson’s fourth grade class at Harding Avenue in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently participated in a class debate about the American Revolution for their social studies unit. Students dressed

in costume, practiced their roles and debated either as a loyalist or patriot.

Through the activity students learned what early American culture was like and how people felt under Great Britain’s rule.
