2024 Lindenhurst Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony

The Village of Lindenhurst & the United Veterans Council of Lindenhurst Wade-Burns Post 7279 Veterans of Foreign War (VFW), along with American Legion Feustel-Kurdt Post 1120, will host the 2024 Memorial Day Parade & Ceremonies on Monday, May 27, 2024. This year’s Grand Marshal is surviving Korean War Veteran Thomas Aloisi.

The day of remembrance will begin at 10:00AM with congruent ceremonies by the VFW at Breslau Cemetery and the Lindenhurst Fire Department (LFD) at Fireman’s Memorial Park.

Following their ceremony, the VFW will march

west on Newark Street, turn south on Delaware Avenue, and turn west on Charles Street to meet up with the LFD and other parade participants at Fireman’s Memorial Park.

From there, at 11:00AM, the parade will head west on Hartford Street, turn south on North Wellwood Avenue, making a brief stop on South Wellwood Avenue to lay a wreath at the WWI Memorial, and continue to Village Hall, 430 South Wellwood Avenue, where a Memorial Day Observance will take place at approximately 12:00PM.

Lindenhurst Robotics Coach Honored

Daniel Cahill, coach and advisor of Lindenhurst High School’s robotics team, the “Psicotics,” was recently honored by the FIRST Robotics organization with the Woodie Flowers Award. The award recognizes robotics team coaches who have displayed exceptional mentorship and support for their team.

Mr. Cahill was honored at FIRST’s regional Long Island Competition at Hofstra, where his team competed. The Woodie Flowers Award was created by Dr. William Murphy in 1996 to recognize special mentors whose teams compete at FIRST Robotics competitions. It honors leaders who motivate through communication and challenge their students to be clear and succinct in their own communications and goals. Winners are nominated by their own team members, and Mr. Cahill’s students wrote an essay recommending him for this special award.

United States flag facts and handling etiquette

The United States flag was first imagined after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Continental Congress authorized creation of the first national flag on June 14, 1777. It was decided that the flag should have 13 stripes, alternating red and white, to represent the original 13 colonies, and that the new union be represented by 13 white stars in a blue field to signify a “new constellation.” Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is most often credited with the original design.

Today there are 50 stars on the flag to represent the 50 states, while the 13 stripes still represent the 13 British colonies that became the first states. While this may be common knowledge, Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, may not be as widely known. The code dictates that the flag is to be treated with respect and proper etiquette. The code is extensive, but the following guidelines can help private individuals interested in displaying their flags to do so in accordance with the law.

· Flags should only be displayed in public from sunrise to sunset, unless the flag can be properly illuminated during darkness. In this instance, it may be displayed at all times.

· When displayed with other flags, such as on a single staff or lanyard, the U.S. flag should be above all other flags. If flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left.

· State and local flags are traditionally flown lower than the American flag.

· During marching ceremonies or parades with other flags, the U.S. flag should be to the observer’s left.

· The flag should be displayed at every public institution and at schools during school days.

· When displayed vertically and not on a staff, the union should be on the left when observed. It should be suspended so its folds fall freely as though the flag were staffed.

· The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

· The flag is often displayed at halfstaff on days of mourning, including Memorial Day. The flag should first be hoisted to the peak for an instant, then lowered to half-staff position, which is half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.

· On a vehicle, the U.S. flag should be displayed from a staff firmly fixed to the chassis. It should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle.

· The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. It also should never have anything placed on it.

· A flag in poor condition should be destroyed with dignity, preferably by burning. Most American Legion posts and local Boy Scouts troops will have the resources to retire flags accordingly. Many will host annual flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day.

Winters Bros. Makes Donation To Lindenhurst Tree Project

Winter Bros. Waste Systems, of West Babylon, recently made an $8,500.00 donation to the Village of Lindenhurst for the planting of new trees along South Wellwood Avenue, through the heart of the Lindenhurst Downtown Business District, from Gates Avenue to Hoffman Avenue.

Earlier this year, the Village began a project to improve pedestrian and traffic safety on Wellwood Avenue, including the installation of pedestrian crosswalks, sidewalk bulbouts and median extensions, repaving and curbing of the road, and restriping and reangling of

parking spaces. As part of this “facelift”, the Village had to remove the trees that adorned our southern Downtown. Many of those trees, however, were in failing health, or of a variety with height and root-growth that threatened the integrity and safety of our sidewalks and utility wires. Therefore, in an effort to replant trees that would benefit the Village in longevity -- ones that will not become too large and cause future damage, and ones that are not of an invasive species – the Village consulted with a number of horticultural experts, as well as the

Junior Mayor Attends Village Board Meeting

The Village Board had a special guest at the April 16th meeting! The Village Board was joined by Junior Mayor Pia Parikh. Pia is a 4th grade student at Albany Avenue and was one of the winners of the “Loving Lindenhurst” contest. Pia created an “Everything Lindy” puzzle with each

piece representing a different thing she loves about Lindenhurst, including the library, Albany Avenue School, Winter on Wellwood, and more.

Pia opened the Village Board meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. She then joined the Board

to follow along with the meeting’s agenda, share some of her favorite things in Lindenhurst, and even made the motion to close out the meeting!

We look forward to welcoming more of the Junior Mayors at the Village Board meetings throughout the year.
