July start is for a 6-week summer session (July 5th through August 12th)  Fingerprinting, initial medical exam and New York State criminal background check is mandatory  High school diploma or equivalent required  Salaried and per diem position with benefits will be available in September. Anyone beginning summer employment that remains on staff for the 2022-2023 school year, will receive a sign on bonus that will be paid in September (for additional information ask your interviewer)

Spring Landscaping Tips

ne of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start in knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year.

While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”). Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting

flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another cold day.

Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after a spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil.

Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed.

Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in.

The Lindenhurst Union Free School District is pleased to announce that Mr. Anthony Davidson has been appointed as superintendent of schools, effective July 1, 2022.

“With 25 years of experience in education, the Board of Education is confident that Mr. Davidson has the leadership skills, understanding and vision to continue to move the district forward,” said Board President Donna Hochman.

Throughout the tenure of his career, Mr. Davidson has served students at every professional level. He began his career in education as a teacher of English language arts in the Commack School District and then went on to become the Commack chairperson of English language arts.

From there, he held the positions of assistant principal and principal of Commack High School and Commack Middle School, respectively.

In 2018, Mr. Davidson accepted the position of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Locust Valley Central School District, a role he currently holds. Additionally, Mr. Davidson currently serves as an adjunct professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Mr. Davidson has enhanced the school communities he’s worked with in myriad ways that demonstrate his leadership,

ANTHONY DAVIDSON such as the expansion of the career exploration program in Locust Valley CSD to include externships, nearly tripling the number of dual-enrollment opportunities; creating, staffing and overseeing the district’s K-6 remote learning academy; leading the K-5 implementation and grade 6 exploration of the Teacher College Readers and Writers Program Framework; initiating and guiding the expansion of special education services to include integrated co-teaching in Locust Valley; and supervising the creation and design of curricula in serving as the IB Head of School in Commack for the first Middle Years Program on Long Island and one of the Largest in North America.

“Throughout the search process, the more I learned about Lindenhurst, the more enamored I became,” said Mr. Davidson. “I’ve

learned that the people of Lindenhurst surround and support each other and have great pride in their town and schools. I am grateful for the confidence and commitment the Board has extended to me and am excited for the opportunity to lead in a community where people genuinely care about and demonstrate a commitment to each other and to making their district the best it can be for all children. I look forward to many years together as we build upon the longstanding tradition of excellence in Lindenhurst.”

Mr. Davidson has been honored with a number of professional recognitions, including the Commack Middle School Teacher of the Year, PTA Advocatein-Action Award and Long Island BOCES Fred Podolski Leadership and Innovation Award. He has also presented at several American Middle Level Education National Conferences, as well as the Long Island Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development Annual Conference and the Long Island Technology Summit.

When not working, Mr. Davidson and his fiancé spend their time shuttling their children to their sports games and enjoying being outdoors with the family’s rescue dog Sammy, at the beach or on the slopes.

Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-profit organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families.

In this article we focus on their vital role in promoting foster care across Long Island.

As next month is quickly approaching, it is appropriate to mention that May is National Foster Care Month, an initiative conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services. The month is devoted to “ensuring a bright future for more than 407,000 children and youth in foster care.” The average age is 8 years old for those children, and there is just about an event split between how many of them are boys and how many are girls.

The month acknowledges foster parents, family members, volunteers, policymakers and others who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections.

On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identification and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certifications in parenting skills.

Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

play in the child welfare system and helps children and youth stay connected to their family, their community and their cultural roots if they are unable to safely remain at home.

The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reunification for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families.

The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest.

Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulfilling lives.
