The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together

Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together. The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.

In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.

Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.

The Lindenhurst Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions Clubs are hosting the 20th Community Fellowship Dinner on April 27, 2023, at 6:30 PM at the Goccia D’Oro II, Montauk Hwy., Lindenhurst, honoring the Lindenhurst Youth Center on its 50th anniversary of service to local youth.

“I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and

smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)

2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.

3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our neighbors!

Second Annual Lindenhurst St. Patrick’s Parade

Wellwood Avenue was once again festively adorned with waving Irish and U.S. flags, and green lights and shamrocks decorating Village Square Park, for the Second Annual Lindenhurst St. Patrick’s Parade! The 2023 Parade took place on Saturday, March 25th, and was led by Grand Marshal Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn.

When Councilman Terrence McSweeney first took office in 2018, his motivation was not politics, his motivation was leaving this town a better place than how he found it. Outdoor Stations Of The Cross – 1.5 Mile Walking Service – Offered By Catholic Cemeteries Of Long Island At Cemetery Of The Holy Rood On Good Friday

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island welcomes the Catholic faithful across Long Island to participate in its Stations of the Cross prayer service at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury this Good Friday, April 7th. This prayer service, which is one of the largest attended events at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island each year, is celebrated annually on Good Friday, one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar. During the prayer service, the Catholic faithful will follow a 1.5 mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through the 14 Stations of the Cross. Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees.

Hundreds of Catholics are expected to take part in the Good Friday services at the

Cemetery of the Holy Rood. Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with selfdirected tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.

Debut Theater Company Presents Moonrise At BACCA Arts Center

Debut Theater Company is opening its new play, Moonrise, on April 14 at BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst at 149 North Wellwood Avenue. The play will run April 14, 15, 21, 22 at 8:00 pm, and April 15 and 23 at 2:00 pm.

In this original drama by Anthony DiFranco, a close family onceremoved from Ellis Island gets a shock when a beauty in a red dress shows up uninvited at a family funeral, with a story that pulls their idea of themselves inside out. In the upheaval that follows, they all have to work hard to find reconciliation, hope, and love.

The cast includes John Torres, James Rappa, JoAnn Celentano, Alexandra Thomas, Michele Brisco, and James Brautigam. Direction is by Deborah Rupy.

At the March 1 meeting of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District Board of Education, the Board honored Coordinator of Instructional Technology and Library Media Specialists Jennifer Freedman for being named the 2022-2023 Administrator of the Year by the

Western Suffolk BOCES School Library System Council.

This award is presented to an administrator who has demonstrated a commitment to the growth of school libraries by actively promoting school libraries, providing support for library programs and

creating an environment that encourages staff and students to use libraries. Mrs. Freedman will be honored at the School Library System’s 8th Leadership and Information Symposium on May 11 at the Western Suffolk BOCES Conference Center.

Lindenhurst A.R.M.S. Club Continues Outstanding Community Service Efforts

A.R.M.S. Club recently joined representatives from Legislator Kevin McCaffrey’s office and Village of Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata to be awarded Certificates of

Recognition for their commitment to serving others in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. Their efforts were responsible for the distribution of over 140 new backpacks filled with essential school supplies this

past year.

The students sold raffle tickets for prizes that were donated, raising an additional $255 for a grand total of $2,405 that will be used to sustain the outreach effort of next year’s campaign.
