The Town of Babylon is pleased to announce that a shoreline stabilization capital improvement project is currently underway at Tanner Park in Copiague. Spearheaded by Deputy Supervisor and Parks Chairman, Tony Martinez, the project aims to safeguard the coastline.

The scope of work involves the construction of approximately 386 linear feet of rock revetment, installation of approximately 412 feet of coir logs, and backfilling and planting with native vegetation. This comprehensive approach not only fortifies the shoreline

but also contributes to the preservation of local ecology.

“The Tanner Park shoreline stabilization project marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to protect our coastal assets and recreational areas,” said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez. “By addressing the

erosion issues exacerbated by events like recent coastal storms, we are ensuring the long-term resilience of our waterfront areas.”

The necessity for this project arose from the erosion that began to undermine the shoreline, particularly evident after Hurricane Sandy. This

erosion also impacted the entrance to the Howell Creek canal near Tanner Park Marina. With Suffolk County’s dredging of the channel in 2022, the urgency to stabilize the area became paramount to prevent further erosion and protect vital infrastructure within Tanner Park.

The Town of Babylon remains committed to proactive measures that prioritize environmental sustainability and community resilience along our south shore.

Completion of the Tanner Park shoreline stabilization project is anticipated in the next few weeks.

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers

It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and offsite volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team.

Legislator Donnelly: Suffolk County Offers Employment Programs For Residents

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) would like to inform residents about the Suffolk County’s special employment-readiness programs to assist those seeking a job or a new career.

According to Legislator Donnelly, the Suffolk

County Department of Labor has a mulitude of resources to assist residents in their job searches through its One-Stop Employment Center. Among the innovative and award-winning services available are Job Fairs, held at convenient locations throughout the County,

Lindenhurst High School Presents: Little Shop Of Horrors

The Lindenhurst High School Thespian Troupe and music department put on a successful spring production of Little Shop of Horrors in March. Audiences were enthralled by this rock

musical’s tale of love and ambition—as well its maneating plant.

Lead actor David Schrader played the hapless protagonist Seymour, while Julie Ricotta played his flower shop co-worker and secret crush Audrey. In a remarkable feat of puppetry and talent, the play’s killer plant, Audrey II, was brought to life by students Bean Cameron and John Delio and was voiced by Phoenix Desroches. Ayla Jennings played greedy shop owner Mr. Mushnik, Riley Buckley played Audrey’s abusive dentist boyfriend Dr. Orin Scrivello, while Cassandra

Herrador, Zayla Rodriguez, and Chihiro Hall played the narrators Crysal, Ronnette, and Chiffon, respectively. Together, the cast brought Skid Row—the rundown setting of the play—to life, much to the audiences’ delight.

Little Shop of Horrors ran on March 15 and 16, with a special free performance for the community’s senior citizens on March 13.

Lindenhurst Boasts A Rising Star

Long Island’s Lindenhurst boasts a rising star: 16-year-old amateur boxer Jaden Harvey. Formerly a 156 lbs 2-time Metro and New York State champion, now fighting at 165, Jaden is a junior at Lindenhurst High School, aiming for success in this year’s Ringmaster’s finals (Formerly known as the Golden Gloves). With his father, former boxer Jerry Harvey, guiding him, Jaden, a fraternal twin, is determined to make a mark in the boxing world and put Lindenhurst on the map. Currently ranked #6 globally, Jaden’s impressive performances at last year’s USA Nationals in Lafayette,

Louisiana, earned him a recent invitation to the Mayweather Gym in Las Vegas and respect among his boxing peers. These achievements underscore his rapid ascension in the boxing world and a glimpse into the future of boxing with Jaden in it. Despite his two-year stint in boxing, Jaden recently clinched the Silver at the National Championship in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and contemplates turning pro in 2025, possibly skipping the 2028 Olympics. Beyond boxing, the slick, smooth southpaw is a skilled Taekwondo martial artist, where he dominated and became

Taekwondo National champion. In addition to being a champion inside the ring, Jaden is also a champion outside of the ring. Inspired by the late great champion Vernon “The Viper” Forrest, he recruits other kids and encourages them to come to the gym to stay off the streets and out of potential trouble. Jaden and TEAM Harvey are currently open to potential sponsors to help open a hometown gym in Lindenhurst and further the career of our new Lindenhurst sensation, Jaden Harvey. Keep an eye out for this champion; he will become a household name.

Harding Avenue Students Take A Trip To Mars

Fifth grade students at Harding Avenue Elementary School recently embarked on a mars rover-themed project inspired by the book A Rover’s Story. The activity tasked students with creating their own mars rovers and documenting their rovers’ various accomplishments. The activity was part of the 2023 Global Read Aloud initiative, in which students across the world read A Rover’s Story and took part in various activities related to the book.

A Rover’s Story, by Jasmine Warga, chronicles the mission of the mars rover Resilience, a fictional rover modeled after NASA’s real Perseverance and Curiosity rovers. Throughout its construction, Resilience develops a design quirk, giving it human emotions, which it brings with it on its mission. Throughout, Resilience contends with the harsh Martian environment while seeking to accomplish its

mission of science and research.

In addition to designing their own rovers, the Harding Avenue students created graphic organizers detailing their rovers’ feelings regarding the various tests they undertook on the surface of mars. The students also created short videos about their rovers’ accomplishments during their missions. Parents and staff were invited to visit the “Harding Avenue Museum,” which displayed all of the students’ works.
