A Day Of Solidarity For Ukraine On Anthem Corner

The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Knights of Columbus Council #794 co-chaired a Day of Solidarity for Ukraine, and formally kicked off “March for Ukraine” with Suffolk County Legislator and Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey’s office. “March for Ukraine” is a program and commitment to collect donations at McCaffrey’s office to donate to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church for transport to Poland and Ukraine.

Father Olvian Popovici has taken on a huge role in supporting Ukraine and managing these efforts alongside his parishioners.

“We are so touched

by the generosity of the Lindenhurst community in response to a call for support for Ukraine,” said Grand Knight Stephen Strigaro. “It is with great resolve we work alongside our Brother Knights in Poland and Ukraine to get them with much needed supplies for relief efforts across the country.” March for Ukraine will continue for this month, along with a fundraiser on April 23, 2022 at Tennessee Jeds in Lindenhurst from 3:007:00pm with Mayor Mike Lavorata as the Honorary Chairman.

“Today’s event is another demonstration of cooperation between

the businesses, local and federal government, the civic associations, the church, and the loyal patrons,” said Chancellor, Patrick Corcoran. “It was a honor to be alongside Monsignor Joe, Father Popovici, Andrew, Rich, Mike, and Kevin in sharing our joint initiatives to support, with Belfast Owners and Brother Knights Dave Crowe and Bobby Fortier, donating $10,000.00 onsite during the event!”

Donations are accepted at Kevin McCaffrey’s office at 125C South Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst, Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Lindenhurst Lending A Hand Recently, volunteers from the Lindenhurst community met at the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, located at 225 North 4th Street in Lindenhurst, to help

sort and pack items that were donated by local residents. The items that were collected will be sent to designated eastern European countries to assist with the ongoing

humanitarian efforts for Ukrainian refugees in need.

The Village’s Department of Public Works was on hand to assist with the organizing of donations and cleanup.

Lindenhurst Recognizes David Crowe

March is a great time of year when we are all Irish, and one of the best ways we celebrate is with a St. Patrick’s Parade.

David Crowe, Proprietor of the Belfast Gastropub, was recognized by the Lindenhurst Village Board with a day in his honor – St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, 2022 – for conceiving the idea, and organizing the first-ever St. Patrick’s Parade in the nearly 100year history of the Village.

Located at 101 North Wellwood Avenue, the Belfast Gastropub opened its doors last year, bringing Irish food, drink, music and tradition to the Village Downtown.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “I am so grateful to David Crowe and the rest of the Lindenhurst St. Patrick’s Parade Committee – RJ Renna, Kevin McCaffrey, and Katie Schrader – for organizing this fun, family event,

celebrating Irish heritage, and the Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, in the Village of Lindenhurst.”

The Lindenhurst St. Patrick’s Parade will step off at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, March 26th, from Fireman’s Park, traveling west on Hartford Street, turning south on Wellwood Avenue, and proceeding to the Middle School. Come out and enjoy a day of Irish fun!

Town Of Babylon Officials Launch Drive To Support Ukraine

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilmen Terence McSweeney and DuWayne Gregory recently joined together with leadership and congregants at the Holy Family Ukrainian Church for a prayer service in support of the people of Ukraine.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly and Knights of Columbus Chancellor Patrick Corcoran were also in attendance.

At the service, Supervisor Schaffer announced that the Town of Babylon has launched a drive to collect monetary donations that will go toward supporting

Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing the Russian invasion. The drive is being coordinated through the Industrial Development Agency with the goal of raising $25,000.

“The Town of Babylon is home to one of the largest Ukrainian populations on Long Island, and we will do everything we can to stand with the people of Ukraine, and with our friends and neighbors here at home who still have family and friends over there,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

“The Babylon community always comes together in times of crisis and I know this will be no different,” added Supervisor Schaffer.

All proceeds collected through the drive will be donated to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lindenhurst, which will work to disseminate the funds through charitable organizations where refugees are resettling.

Supervisor Schaffer and the Babylon Town Board hope to reach the $25,000 goal by early April.

In person donations can be made directly to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church at 225. N. 4th Street in Lindenhurst.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985.

“We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.

Read Across Lindenhurst

Students throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District celebrated national Read Across America on March 2 in myriad ways. The day honors the birthday of the late Dr. Seuss, author of many famous children’s books including “Horton Hears A Who,” “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” and “There’s a Wocket in My Pocket.”

Lindenhurst High School Student Council members recently organized an virtual event in which the high school student-volunteers gathered in their school library throughout the day and used Chromebooks to

read virtually to the district’s elementary school students.

At Lindenhurst Middle School, many teachers and administrators served as guest readers and acted out various stories, essays and poems throughout the day for students. A variety of Dr. Seuss books were read, along with other selections.

First grade students in Lisa Cognato and Evelyn Portillo’s dual-language English Spanish class at Albany Avenue Elementary School spent the day working on Dr. Seussthemed activities in both languages to strengthen their skills.

As such, it is surmised that having many drinks undoubtedly means more good luck for the year ahead due to all those lucky shamrocks.

It’s common to come across religious rituals, pilgrimages and processions on St. Patrick’s Day, particularly to places associated with St. Patrick. Downpatrick in County Down is believed to be the final resting place of St. Patrick and many people visit the grave and cathedral there. Some also may want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin.

St. Patrick’s Day commemorates its namesake, the patron saint of Ireland who helped spread Christianity across this island nation.

YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use.

PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists.

PACT is comprised of five communities and school districts

Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities.

The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.

They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20.

Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair.

Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Even if gatherings come together fluidly, pub and restaurant owners can facilitate the process. Here are some tips to make it happen.
