Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment.

With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

the fulfillment of their lives through these dogs. The service dogs are not just partners, they are their right hand, their left hand, their legs and more. We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.” Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities.

Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.

Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Second Annual Lindenhurst St. Patrick’s Parade

The Irish have landed in Lindenhurst! Lindenhurst’s Wellwood Avenue is once again festively adorned with waving Irish and U.S. flags, and green lights and shamrocks decorating Village Square Park, in preparation for the Second Annual Lindenhurst St. Patrick’s Parade! The 2023 Parade will take place on Saturday, March 25th, at 12:00 PM., and will be led by Grand Marshal Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn. Bishop Brennan grew up in Lindenhurst, and has always remained close to his hometown parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C.C., as he has risen through the ranks of the church to his current position as Bishop of Brooklyn.  Still an active member of the Lindenhurst Community, he has chosen OLPH’s Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul as the recipient of the 2023 Parade’s charitable donation.

Parking along Wellwood Avenue will be restricted on Parade Day, and the cross streets along the parade route will be barricaded starting at approximately 10:00AM.

Dawn McGrath Named Assistant Vice President Of Operations At Educational Bus Transportation

Dawn McGrath, a resident of Lindenhurst, NY, has been promoted to Assistant Vice President of Operations at Educational Bus Transportation, which provides student transportation services to a number of school districts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The announcement was made by Educational Bus Transportation CEO John Corr.

“For 35 years, Dawn has been part of the Educational Bus family, beginning as a school bus driver before moving on to dispatcher and eventually Operations Manager,” observed Corr. “Every step of the way, she has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to excellence and safety. She is a consummate professional who possesses the skills and ability that are essential to excellence in student transportation. Everyone at Educational Bus Transportation joins me in congratulating Dawn as she begins her next chapter

as Assistant Vice President of Operations.”

According to Corr, McGrath will report directly to Patti Royce-Moser, Vice President of Operations, helping to provide support, leadership, and direction to Educational Bus Transportation’s operating locations throughout Long Island. with company policies and procedures.

Mayor’s Beautification Society Holds 30th Annual Pancake Breakfast

The Lindenhurst Mayor’s Beautification Society (MBS) held its 30th annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, March 5. The event was a big success thanks to the hard work of the MBS volunteers. All funds raised from the pancake breakfast go towards the continued beatification efforts of the

MBS.

A special thank you to Deputy Mayor and MBS Chairperson Maryann Weckerle for organizing this event. Additional thanks to Mayor Mike Lavorata, Trustee RJ Renna, and Legislator Kevin McCaffrey for their help in the kitchen!

Officials from the Town of Babylon including Supervision Rich Schaffer, Councilman Tony Martinez, and Receiver of Taxes Jenn Montiglio presented the Mayor’s Beautification Society with a proclamation to recognize their dedication to the community.

FIRST RESPONDER FRIDAY - On Friday, March 3rd Councilman McSweeney, the SCPD 1st Pct., and the Lindenhurst Fire Dept. EMS visited Mrs. Megan Maronski & Mrs. Jean Christiansen’s 6th-grade class at the Lindenhurst Middle School. Councilman McSweeney thanked the classes for participating in P.S. I Love You Day and writing letters to our 1st Responders. He then spoke about his role as a 1st responder as a firefighter with the FDNY. The Suffolk County Police Dept. spoke to them about the roles and responsibilities of our police officer and the Lindenhurst Fire Dept. spoke about the roles and responsibilities of an EMT/Paramedics. McSweeney added, “Look at the people here today. We call 911 when we have no one else to turn to for help, or we don’t know how to handle the situation ourselves. What would the world look like without our 1st responders?” The class was very intrigued and had many great questions about the roles of each responder.

Please accept this Mayor’s Message as a follow up to the recent Public Hearing held regarding a proposed local law regulating Recreational Vehicles (RVs)/Campers.

I wish to thank all of you who attended the meeting and expressed your opinions, feelings, and concerns regarding the parking/storage of RVs/Campers on private property in our residential neighborhoods. As I reiterated several times during the meeting, the purpose of the Public Hearing was to solicit community input from Village residents.

The Village Board’s main objective has always been, and will continue to be, public safety, as well as the improvement of the quality-of-life in our Village.

Owning an RV/Camper adds greatly to the quality-oflife of many residents and their families, and equal

consideration needs to be given to neighbors who have recreational vehicles parked adjacent to their homes. That being said, it is not our intention to remove a homeowner’s ability to park their RV/Camper on their property, as long as it is safely parked, and does not present a safety problem to your neighbor.

The safety aspect continues to center on the blocking of the Village right-

of-way. RVs/Campers must not obstruct sidewalks, and in cases where a sidewalk does not exist, the eightfoot pedestrian right-ofway.  If an RV/Camper is blocking the right-of-way, a pedestrian’s safety could be in jeopardy. In addition, sight obstructions to egressing a vehicle out of a driveway could lead to a motor vehicle accident.

Therefore, to protect both the RV/Camper owner, and the neighbor’s safety, no RV/Camper should encroach the neighbor’s property, nor should an RV/Camper be used as temporary or permanent residence, or block the pedestrian right-of-way.

I trust the matter will be resolved to the benefit and satisfaction of the majority of our residents. Again, thank you for your input.
