The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

Do you know who cleans and maintains many Long Island Courts?

A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.

As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.

As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”

Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and

a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”

TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.

Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.

The Village Board hereby finds and determines that in order to protect and safeguard the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst, its residents and their property with respect to storage of campers, trailers and motor homes in the Village, that code of the Village must be updated to stay current with existing developments and conditions.

REPLACE SECTION §155-11, WHICH WILL NOW READ AS FOLLOWS:

§155-11. RV/Campers

A. No camper, camper trailer, mobile home or house trailer shall be stored outside any place in the Village on public or private property for more than 2 hours absent approval of the Village Board of Zoning Appeals.

B. In making such determination, the Board of Appeals shall consider the following factors:

(i) Whether such vehicle exceeds 7 feet in height

(ii) Whether such vehicle exceeds 20 feet in length

(iii) Whether the weight of such vehicle exceeds 10,000 pounds

(iv) Whether such vehicle is operational and owned by and registered to the owner of the property, and bears current license registrations as applicable

(v) Whether such vehicle will be parked or stored in a garage or driveway and on an approved driveway surface

(vi) Whether such vehicle will be the only camper, camper trailer, mobile home or house trailer stored on the respective lot and what other vehicles will be stored on the lot. The foregoing notwithstanding, there shall be no restrictions on the number of such vehicles parked or stored within an enclosed garage.

(vii) Whether such vehicles are to be utilized for living, sleeping, or housekeeping and the requested period of storage.

Whether such vehicles will interfere with the vehicular line of sight, or with pedestrian traffic upon a Village sidewalk or whether a fire hazard is presented.

EXISTING SECTION §155-11 SHALL BE NUMBERED §15512

Validity.

If any section, sentence, clause or phrase of this law is held to be invalid or unconstitutional by any court of competent jurisdiction, then said holding shall in no way affect the validity of the remaining portions of the law. Effective Date.

The Lindenhurst Middle School Library transformed into an ESCAPE ROOM, if only for a few hours this week. Lindy Cares Club and Student Council participated in a joint activity in the school library set up by the school librarian Ms. Casale. The activity was an escape room format, and the theme was mental health. Lindy Cares conducts interviews and outreach to all youth of Lindenhurst, and quite often, mental health comes up as a topic that students want to know

more about, so the room was packed! Together the students tackled questions about mental health to unlock boxes containing clues. Once the students discovered the clues, they received a code to open the locks.

Open locks, open minds, lots of fun, learning and connecting students with caring professionals, learning resources, and creating a network of friends they can count on.

Lindy Cares Club is facilitated by Melissa Levy and Ancy Paulose. The Student Council

adult advisors are the Middle School Guidance Counselors with Tara Harris working with the students at this event. Lindy Pride, going the extra steps to create environments in which everyone believes they can thrive! Congratulations to our amazing Lindy student leaders.

Lindy Middle School students interested in joining clubs can visit the social worker’s office for more information and help to find a club that suits them.

The A.R.M.S. Club Awards Dinner

Raises $2,405

Students from the A.R.M.S. Club joined Legislator Kevin McCaffrey’s office and the Village of Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata on January 14th. The students were awarded Certificates of Recognition for their outstanding work this past year in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District, where they distributed over 140 new backpacks filled with essential school supplies for families in need. The students were Alana Downey, Sarah Giacamazzo, Charlyne Paterno, Joseph Rippo, Julia Roman and Lilian Stacy. In addition, the teacher and organizer of the A.R.M.S. Club, Danielle Bottachiari, was presented with a check for $2,150 from Turtle Graphx Sign Fabricator/Installer, Tom Baumann.

That evening the students, parents, business owners and members of the Lindenhurst Community gathered together at RipTides Cocktails & Grill, where they paid tribute to all the local businesses and sponsors who made the event possible.

That evening, the students sold raffle tickets for prizes that were donated and in turn raised an additional $255. All together

a total of $2,405 in funds was raised and will be used in the efforts of next year’s campaign.

Teaching Students About The Role As A Police Officer Within The Community

TEACHING STUDENTS ABOUT THE ROLE AS A POLICE OFFICER - Students from Sara McGuire’s Special Education class at Lindenhurst High School met with police officers from the C.O.P.E unit, PO Dara Caramanico-Broyles, and PO Keley Abbriano last week at the Town of Babylon Annex in North Babylon. The officers introduced themselves to the students and taught the students about their role as a police officers within the community. The students learned how police officers protect themselves and others by exploring the equipment used by the officers. The students made cards to thank the officers for coming to visit and talking to them about community safety and their role in the community.
