The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org

Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet!

What to expect in a 10-week curriculum: Each 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection and contribution.

All coaches are trained to teach as intended, while building relationships with and between girls, creating a positive, inclusive environment and supporting individual improvement.

During the 10 weeks, girls will also be inspired to build lives of purpose and to make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each team will create and execute a community service project.

A host of local officials turned out for the Christina Renna Foundation’s Annual Angel’s Wish Gala. Attending was Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata, Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, Trustee Pat Pichichero, Trustee RJ Renna, along with his parents, Phil and Rene Renna, founders of the foundation, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, and Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand. The local officials were there to support the Christina Renna Foundation’s efforts to raise money for their mission to fight childhood cancer. Mayor Lavorata said, “It is important to pause to remember Christina Renna, and all those children who have lost their lives to this horrible disease. May tonight bring hope to those who continue to fight and work towards finding a cure.”

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!

Girls will learn skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions and resolve conflict, that they use at home, school and with friends.

Children who have not been registered by the screening and/ or orientation dates scheduled by the individual elementary schools will not be allowed to attend

the screening and/or orientation. Please feel free to share this information with your friends, relatives and neighbors so we can have as many children as possible registered during this time.

As a specific number of kindergarten seats exist in each elementary school, the district must utilize a first-come, first-serve procedure. Those students registering after the above dates may be enrolled in an overflow school within the Lindenhurst Union Free

School District.

In addition to the above dates and times there will be, by appointment only, two evening registrations from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5 and Wednesday, Feb. 12 for all schools. Time slots for appointments are limited and will be filled as appointments are made. Appointments can be scheduled for these evening dates by calling the Registration/Residency Office at 631-867-3055 after Jan. 30.

traditions can be linked to Valentine’s Day. Here is a list of the interesting ways Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe.

South Korea In South Korea, men get to enjoy the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, as women bestow gifts of chocolate on them. In return, a month later men reciprocate with gifts for women on White Day. South Koreans take Valentine’s Day a step further on Black Day, which falls on April 14. This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status.

Denmark and Norway These Scandinavian countries didn’t really

celebrate Valentine’s Day until recently, but have now put their own spin on the traditions. Men write funny poems or rhyming love notes called Gaekkebrev and send them to women anonymously.

Women must try to guess their admirers by counting dots that are put on the note that correspond to the number of letters in the man’s name.

Estonia In Estonia, Valentine’s Day is a day more devoted to friendship than romantic love. It is called “Sõbrapäev” in Estonian, which translates to “Friend’s Day.” Cards and gifts are exchanged among friends.

Wales In Wales, Valentine’s Day is not celebrated. Rather, the Welsh commemorate St. Dwynwen’s Day, who

is their patron saint of lovers on January 25. It is customary to gift lovespoons, a tradition that likely stems from the practice of sailors carving intricately decorated spoons of wood and presenting them to women
