MARINE IS ON A MISSION - The Marines live by the motto of never leaving anyone behind. For some that includes a dog they have rescued during deployment, and have bonded with. The loyalty from Captain Dave and his unit and the dog that they rescued goes both ways, and now his wish is to bring her back home to the United States with him when he returns soon. He is scheduled to come back home to the United States in early 2020. He can’t imagine leaving Sox behind because he loves her. He first saw Sox when she was a puppy, finding her caught in concertina wire in their camp. He freed her, gave her food and water, and sent her on her way. However, Sox had different plans. In the days that followed, Sox started coming back to their camp each day, feeling safe around the unit and seeking food and water. Some of the other men had even seen the dog being abused out on the streets. Soon, Sox began staying by their side all of the time, even tagging along on some of their missions. On a recent patrol, Sox ventured too far away from the unit and was whipped with a stick by a local. It was at that

For your child to be included in kindergarten screening and orientation, it is asked that you make every effort to register your child on the designated dates. Children who have not been registered by the screening and/ or orientation dates scheduled by the individual elementary schools will not be allowed to attend the screening and/or orientation. Please feel free to share this information with your friends, relatives and neighbors so we can have as many children as possible registered during this time. As a specific number of kindergarten seats exist in each elementary school, the district must utilize a first-come, first-serve procedure. Those students registering after the above dates may be enrolled in an overflow school within the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. In addition to the above

Watch Out For The Post-Holiday “Blues”

Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people however suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider, also orphaned or troubled children who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year. Please don’t get me wrong, I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people, but I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome; and this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February. If you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you; but also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Chrismas Joy to all year round, because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile!

The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/ Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. You can call 855.2YMCALI to get information on volunteering at a branch near you! For additional information on the YMCA of Long Island, please visit www.ymcali.org.

LINDENHURST SOUTH - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JANUARY 15, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,
