YOUR LOCAL LINDENHURST SPECIALIST’S! WE LIVE HERE, WE LIST HERE!
The Village of Lindenhurst culminated their 100th Anniversary Year in the same way they kicked it off – with a New Year’s Eve Ball Drop! The Village also celebrated Joseph Randazzo, Lindenhurst’s only-surviving WWII Veteran, as the evening’s honoree to help drop the Lindenhurst New Year’s Eve Ball. Unable to attend at the last minute, Mr. Randazzo, was proudly represented by his daughter and extended family. Pictured here with members of the Randazzo Family are Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey and Mayor Michael Lavorata. Photo courtesy of Ed Shin

By Barry Klitsberg, Nassau County Medicare Counselor, Family and Children’s Association (FCA) Medicare is a federally run health insurance program for people who are 65 years of age or have collected Social Security Disability for 24 months. It is also available for individuals with permanent kidney failure or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Each year Medicare gives participants the opportunity to modify their health care plan during Open
Enrollment rule. Medicare beneficiaries who are in a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO) and didn’t change their plan by December 7 may switch Medicare Advantage plans between January 1 and March 31, 2024. If you get your prescription coverage through the plan, you can also switch to a different advantage plan or drop your plan and return to original Medicare. Please note, if you return to the original Medicare, you must also switch to a new drug plan. If you prefer, you can also sign up for a Medicare supplement (Medigap) after your return to original Medicare. If you are enrolled in the New York State Elderly Pharmacy Insurance Coverage Program (EPIC) you are also entitled to change your drug plan (or Medicare Advantage Plan) once a year outside of any

Lindenhurst New Year’s Eve Celebration & Ball Drop
LINDENHURST SOUTH - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 2024 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM
The Village of Lindenhurst culminated their 100th Anniversary Year in the same way they kicked it off – with a New Year’s Eve Ball Drop! While last year’s event drew hundreds of residents, families, and visitors out
in the rain, the milder weather this year brought thousands to Village Square to celebrate 2023 and welcome 2024! Sponsored by the Village of Lindenhurst and the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce, the event
featured live music by The Good Life band, fun giveaways, dancing robots, the ball drop, and fireworks! The Village celebrated Joseph Randazzo, Lindenhurst’s onlysurviving WWII Veteran, as the evening’s honoree to
help drop the Lindenhurst New Year’s Eve Ball. Unable to attend at the last minute, Mr. Randazzo, who was just eighteen-years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Army through the Draft Board on June 6th, 1944 – D Day, and fought
in the Battle of the Bulge, was proudly represented by his daughter and extended family. The Lindenhurst New Year’s Eve Ball, designed and built by long-time Lindenhurst resident Floyd Chivvis, and his crew
at Chivvis Enterprises, Inc., was operated with the expert assistance of the Lindenhurst Fire Department. When the countdown ended, a spectacular Fireworks by Grucci show wowed the happy crowd!

OLPH Knights Support Parishioner
Hello 2024!
JOANN CILLA think about improving your online presence and using new digital payments for a better, easier customer experience. It can also mean enhancing in-store shopping. In our personal lives, let’s not do the same old “New Year’s Resolutions” and vow to make this year different from all the past years of failed promises to ourselves. Let’s make our goal this year a simple one: Wellness! Let’s commit to taking care of our physical selves
and our spiritual selves. Let’s find a balance between work and personal life that makes sense for each of us. Let’s go outside for walks when the weather permits and follow a balanced meal plan. Remember, a sound mind in a sound body is the ideal engine for the journey through 2024. Finally, let’s not forget the power of community and relationships. In a digital age where most meetings are behind computer screens, let’s try for more real-life get togethers. I loved going to local Chamber meetings, fundraisers, and meeting local business owners last year. I have promised myself to do this more in 2024. Each day is an opportunity to find adventure, growth, and happiness, both in our professional and personal lives. Let this year be the one where we live fully, embracing every twist and turn on the exciting highway of life.
OLPH KNIGHTS SUPPORT PARISHIONER - The Lindenhurst Knights supported a trip for LIU Post Student Sarah Ronessi. Sarah is a member of the Newman Club, an organization at secular schools for Catholics sponsored by the Diocese. Her trip is a retreat of all Clubs based across the US to focus on faith in action. Sarah’s mother Diane received the check with Msgr. Joe, Financial Secretary Mike Heaney, and Grand Knight Patrick Corcoran.

By JoAnn Cilla “Get your motor runnin’, head out on the highway, looking for adventure in whatever comes our way.” This song, “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf, was on the radio this morning. It sounded like the perfect introduction to 2024. This year is our opportunity to fully embrace “whatever comes our way.” We need to put the pedal to the metal and speed towards success and fulfillment… whatever that looks like in business and in our personal lives. The business world in 2024 is rapidly evolving, driven by technology, and changing consumer behaviors. If you want the checkered flag this year, you need to remember one word: innovation. This doesn’t mean investing in every new gadget or trend. It’s more about making small, consistent improvements while being open to change. For local business owners,

“Today marks a significant step towards implementing Governor Hochul’s vision of a sustainable and resilient energy future for New York. Nearly eight years in the making, this first offshore wind turbine producing energy transforms that vision into a reality. LIPA is proud to support this landmark project on behalf of our 1.2 million customers on Long Island and in the Rockaways.” Ørsted Group EVP and CEO Americas, David Hardy said, “East Hampton has now made history as the first community in New York to receive clean energy from an offshore wind farm. South Fork Wind is not just a trailblazing project for the state, it’s also one of the foundations of America’s offshore wind energy industry and a testament to our team’s commitment, expertise and hard work. Thanks to the leadership of the Biden and Hochul administrations, and our state and local partners and supporters, South Fork Wind is powering up and setting the stage for a growing American industry.” First approved by the LIPA Board of Trustees in 2017, South Fork Wind began construction in February 2022, beginning with the onshore export cable system that links the project to the LIPA energy grid, which was completed early this year. The wind farm reached its “steel in the water” milestone in June 2023 with the installation of the project’s first monopile foundation. Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel, the Aeolus, is installing the turbines. South Fork Wind includes the first U.S.-built offshore wind substation. More than 350 U.S. workers across three states supported construction of this offshore substation, a topside structure that collects the power produced by wind turbines and connects it to the grid. New York union workers supported its
installation offshore. Long Island-based contractor Haugland Energy Group LLC (an affiliate of Haugland Group LLC), installed the underground duct bank system for South Fork Wind’s onshore transmission line and led the construction of the project’s onshore interconnection facility. LS Cable installed and jointed the onshore cables with support from Long Island’s Elecnor Hawkeye. The onshore cable scope of work alone created more than 100 union jobs for Long Island skilled trades workers. Roman Stone, also on Long Island, manufactured concrete mattresses to protect the undersea cables, and Ljungstrom, located in western New York, in partnership with Riggs Distler & Company, Inc., provided specialized structural steelwork. Suffolk County Executive, Steve Bellone said, “Suffolk County is proud to be a national leader in clean and renewable energy. Through the collaboration and leadership of Governor Hochul, our regional officials and community stakeholders, we remain at the forefront of the offshore wind industry, helping to ensure the long-term sustainability and economic growth of our region.” Win With Wind Founder Judith Hope said, “Our team of East Hampton citizens is thrilled to have been a part of this historic effort. We believe that active local support is essential to the future success of offshore wind in New York State.” Citizens Campaign for the Environment Executive Director Adrienne Esposito said, “This is truly thrilling and historic. As the turbines turn, we also turn a page in the history of energy production. Wind turbines are beacons of hope for a cleaner, safer energy supply which benefits every New Yorker. CCE has supported offshore wind for 18 years and now to see it finally
implemented is a dream turned into reality. A giant thank you to Governor Hochul and the NYSERDA team who have championed this landmark transition for a better future.” Association for a Better Renewable Long Island Executive Director Gordian Raacke said, “Renewable Energy Long Island has been working alongside LIPA, Ørsted, East Hampton, and many other stakeholders for years to see the completion of the South Fork Wind project. This is exactly what New York State needs to meet the aggressive targets and timelines established in the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. It’s great to know that homes are now using clean, renewable energy, immediately reducing our carbon emissions.” This announcement builds on the momentum established by the Governor’s announcement earlier this month, which publicized the largest state investment in renewable energy in United States history. The conditional awards included three offshore wind and 22 land-based renewable energy projects totaling 6.4 gigawatts of clean energy, enough to power 2.6 million New York homes and deliver
approximately 12 percent of New York’s electricity needs once completed. When coupled with two marquee offshore wind blade and nacelle manufacturing facilities, this portfolio of newly announced projects is expected to create approximately 8,300 familysustaining jobs and spur $20 billion in economic development investments statewide, including d e v e l o p e r- c o m m i t t e d investments to support disadvantaged communities. New York State’s NationLeading Climate Plan New York State’s nationleading climate agenda calls for an orderly and just transition that creates family-sustaining jobs, continues to foster a green economy across all sectors and ensures that at least 35 percent, with a goal of 40 percent, of the benefits of clean energy investments are directed to disadvantaged communities. Guided by some of the nation’s most aggressive climate and clean energy initiatives, New York is on a path to achieving a zero-emission electricity sector by 2040, including 70 percent renewable energy generation by 2030, and economywide carbon neutrality by mid-century. A cornerstone of this
transition is New York’s unprecedented clean energy investments, including more than $55 billion in 145 large-scale renewable and transmission projects across the state, $6.8 billion to reduce building emissions, $3.3 billion to scale up solar, nearly $3 billion for clean transportation initiatives, and over $2 billion in NY Green Bank commitments. These and other investments are supporting more than 165,000 jobs in New York’s clean energy sector in 2021 and over 3,000 percent growth in the distributed solar sector since 2011. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, New York also adopted zero-emission vehicle regulations, including requiring all new passenger cars and lightduty trucks sold in the State be zero emission by 2035. Partnerships are continuing to advance New York’s climate action with nearly 400 registered and more than 100 certified Climate Smart Communities, nearly 500 Clean Energy Communities, and the State’s largest community air monitoring initiative in 10 disadvantaged communities across the state to help target air pollution and combat climate change.
LINDENHURST SOUTH - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 2024 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the successful delivery of clean power to Long Island from the first operational wind turbine at South Fork Wind, marking a historic milestone of the first utility-scale offshore wind farm in federal waters to begin “powering up” in the United States. The project has completed the installation of two turbines, with one operational, approximately 35 miles off Montauk with all 12 turbines expected to be installed by early 2024. Today’s announcement supports progress towards the State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goal to install nine gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035. “Today’s milestone generating the first power from South Fork Wind - is a significant step toward achieving New York’s offshore wind goal,” Governor Hochul said. “As the nation’s first utility-scale project in federal waters, South Fork Wind will power thousands of homes with clean, renewable energy, and demonstrates that offshore wind is a viable clean energy resource that can be harnessed as part of our transition away from harmful fossil fuels.” This milestone, which comes just two weeks after the installation of New York’s first offshore wind turbine, was celebrated in East Hampton alongside joint-venture partners Ørsted and Eversource, federal, state, county and local officials, advocates and community members. When complete, South Fork Wind will generate approximately 130 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power approximately 70,000 Long Island homes. The renewable energy from South Fork Wind will eliminate up to six million tons of carbon emissions each year, the equivalent of taking 60,000 cars off the road. Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) CEO, Thomas Falcone, said,

PSEG Long Island Celebrates Military Veterans PSEG Long Island and its employees celebrated and supported military veterans throughout the month of November and beyond. Every Tuesday in November and on Dec. 12, PSEG Long Island sponsored Military Appreciation Tuesday events at the Long Island Cares, Inc. – Harry Chapin Food Bank pantries in Bethpage, Hampton Bays, Huntington Station, Freeport and Lindenhurst. Each Tuesday, when the veterans shopped at the pantries, they were offered LED lightbulbs, reusable bags and different extra items supplied by PSEG Long Island, including personal care needs, healthy proteins, fresh produce, winter jackets and pillows. In all, nearly 100 PSEG Long Island employee-volunteers served more than 1,000
veterans and their families with these healthy foods and other necessities. PSEG Long Island employees also participated in Nassau County’s Veterans Stand Down, where employees distributed hundreds of items to the nearly 500 veterans who attended. In support of the General Needs veterans’ assistance organization, PSEG Long Island gave out new winter coats, hats, gloves, pillows, socks and undergarments, along with LED lightbulbs and information about the company’s financial assistance and energy efficiency programs. The week before Thanksgiving, PSEG Long Island collaborated, once again, with Long Island Cares and Suffolk County government to
distribute the makings of Thanksgiving dinner. In a drive-thru distribution for more than 350 veterans at the Dennison building in Hauppauge, PSEG Long Island employees handed out frozen turkeys and hams, pies, produce and other trimmings. In addition, the veterans were given LED lightbulbs and reusable shopping bags. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone stopped by to support the initiative and helped to distribute items. “We are proud to sponsor these events and activities to help veterans throughout the month of November, the time of year when our nation recognizes the sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country,” said David Lyons, PSEG Long Island’s interim president and COO. “These
initiatives are opportunities for us to honor veterans in our community and thank them for their service. I am grateful to our PSEG Long Island employees for raising their hands to support our neighbors who served.” “Long Island Cares relies on corporate support to help fulfill our mission. This partnership has become a necessary lifeline for Long Island’s most vulnerable populations. We are humbled by the support provided by PSEG Long Island and its employee volunteers, and are grateful for their continued commitment to addressing Long Island food insecurity,” said Dr. Jessica Rosati, vice president for programs at Long Island Cares. Many veterans who participated said they were grateful for the helpful items distributed and for the personal attention they got from PSEG Long Island’s
employee-volunteers. In addition to these November events, PSEG Long Island employees, many of whom are military veterans themselves, participated in several other events and activities during the year to support veterans in the community. • In September, several employees kayaked 22 miles across the Long Island Sound in the 22 PTSD Awareness Challenge to shine a light on the estimated 22 veterans who take their own lives each day. • Each December and May, groups of employees place wreaths and American flags at the national cemeteries in Calverton and Pinelawn for Flags Across America and Wreaths Across America. This year, PSEG Long Island also donated 500 wreaths to
the wreath-laying event taking place Dec. 16. • In August, employeevolunteers greeted veterans and distributed PSEG Long Islandprovided fresh produce, clothing and other items at Suffolk County’s Veterans Stand-Down event. PSEG Long Island has a longstanding commitment to honoring and supporting veterans and is proud to count military veterans among its workforce. Its employees are dedicated to providing customers with safe, reliable power and also committed to the communities they serve by engaging in community service activities to support and help their neighbors.
