On Monday, December 12th, Councilmen DuWayne Gregory and Terence McSweeney “pawsented” a Direct Support Program award to Royal Paws in Babylon Village. Royal Paws provides dog boarding services and training while also having dog treats and collars available for sale. Coowners Cindy and Taylor

Chiacchere along with their other trainers Laura and Dana are looking to give back to the community by training therapy service dogs that will assist veterans, firefighters, or police officers. Councilman McSweeney said, “As a 19year member of the FDNY you will see a lot of bad days. Normally we cope with our feelings by talking

to each other, however knowing there is help through a place like Royal Paws is comforting. I look forward to seeing more from them in the future.”

J-Squid, Vincenzo, Ranger, and Bruce are all training to become service dogs and soon will hopefully find people that they can help!

Albany Avenue Elementary School fifth grade students in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently received an exciting virtual visit from Emmy-winning screenwriter and author Tom Rogers, who spoke

with students about his novel “Eleven” and shared firsthand perspective into his creative process.

The fifth graders began the school year reading Rogers’ novel, and the virtual meeting with Rogers served as

an excellent opportunity to discuss the book in a unique way with its creator.

As part of the visit Rogers shared how he develops ideas, his writing process and how he became an author.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips

(NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips:

• Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry.

•Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases.

• Protect your computer when online shopping:

Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses.

• Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves.

•Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity.

•Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess.

• Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties,

restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car.

• Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera).

• Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home.

• Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.

The Charity of the Month for January is Pal-O-Mine Equestrian

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is a local non-profit organization that began in 1995 as a therapeutic horseback riding program for individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! “Our mission has been, and continues to be, to provide a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing,” said Lisa Gatti, Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian. “We proudly serve individuals with disabilities, those who have been abused or neglected, the military and the impoverished.”

Their location in Islandia offers an unequaled setting for equestrian activities, with a 20-stall barn on 13 acres, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of-the-art-footing and a rider hoisting system, 3 outdoor riding arenas, classrooms, accessible playground, a greenhouse and a wellness center. They offer the following programs:

Lessons: This program provides quality adaptive riding and unmounted lessons that benefit individuals with cognitive, physical, emotional and mental disabilities. Each one of their riding instructors excels in their field and continues with training and certification throughout their careers.

Equine Assisted Learning: This program incorporates horses experientially for educational and emotional growth and learning. Using unique approaches to create positive and constructive learning experiences for children and adolescents who are at risk of failing in the traditional academic setting, this program has changed the lives of countless individuals.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy: This follows a model designed by EAGALA,

Inc., the leading international EAP training and certifying organization.

Currently, Pal-OMine Equestrian has 7 Licensed Mental Health Professionals and 11 Equine Specialists who are certified in this model. Groups that are participating focus on the following issues: grief, trauma and abuse, eating disorders, substance abuse, addiction and codependency.

Speech & Occupational Therapy: Clients respond well to therapy incorporating activities with animals, and a variety of therapy goals can be addressed using this treatment strategy. Occupational Therapists and Speech Language Pathologists run this program to provide therapy services with the assistance of wonderful animals.

Military: For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/or physical injuries. This program is an EAGALA designated Military Program and offers individual, group and family sessions to help people heal.

Corporate Leadership: The way individuals interact and react with horses is very similar to the way they interact with their clients, customers, peers and work groups. People interpret horse behavior/emotions through the lens of their personal perception. How they interpret horses can often be a metaphor for their work, attitudes and relationships. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is proud to offer a Corporate Leadership program.

Start Strong in 2023

I love turning the calendar to a New Year. It means new opportunities to achieve my goals and to get rid of bad habits. But, before I come “In with the new,” I like to go “Out with the old.”

If you find it hard to hit the ground running in January, maybe you need to start with a clean slate to make life easier. Here are three things I do to get myself in position for a fresh start every year:

1) Look Back. Every December, I spend time reviewing the work I did that year.

What goals did I hit? Which ones did I miss? What were the biggest surprises of the year? How did my plans change? I do my review process before I

write a new plan to better set my expectations. If you want to know where you are now, and where you are going, it helps to know where you’ve been.

2) Get Organized. Even though I always start the year with everything organized in my office, at some point, things sometime get messy and out of place. January is the perfect month to fix what is broken, throw out what can’t be repaired, and put everything in its proper place. Cleaning up is a great investment in your business. It will save you time, money, and stress. Go around your office and write down everything that needs to be done. Then, get it done! Don’t stop until every item is crossed off your list.

3) Go Digital. Please don’t tell me that you are still using folders and filing cabinets for documents that can be stored on your computer and in the cloud. In 2023, your goal must be to “go digital!” Find a cloud solution (e.g., Google Drive, Carbonite) and back up all your files. This is a great idea for two reasons: first, you can access the files anywhere and from almost any device. Second, if your computer crashes or your building burns down, you won’t lose valuable documents. If you don’t use the cloud for access and storage, this should be your number one priority.

Benefits Of Leisure Activities

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive

function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults

who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

PSEG Long Island is sharing tips for customers to save money and reduce their energy consumption every day of the year.

National Cut Your Energy Costs Day was launched to encourage consumers to explore energy- saving opportunities. In the past eight years, since PSEG Long Island was established, business and residential customers throughout Long Island and the Rockaways have done just that. More than $380 million in rebates have been distributed to customers through PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency programs. That’s

a savings of more than 2.1 billion kilowatts of energy since 2014 – and enough electricity to power more than 270,000 homes for an entire year.

These tips can help customers save money and energy any time of year:

· Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer.

· Reduce “phantom power” by using energy

efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off.

· Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats.

· Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%.

Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more.

· Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed.

· Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room.

· Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money.

· Install a high efficiency air source heat pump (ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s

Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Additionally, PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort PLUS program offers enhanced rebates for customers who meet certain income qualifications.

Independent annual evaluations by Demand Side Analytics (DSA) have found PSEG Long

Epidemiologist Karina Bak visited the Lindenhurst Youth Center to talk to kids about their favorite part of being a member of the center and their opinions on topics of interest to local students. Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition is determined to bring accurate information to students looking to become more active in their community or perform community service. Lindy Cares peerto-peer programs prepare

youth to effectively communicate with local officials to create an environment where they believe they can thrive.

This get-together was the first-ever collaboration between our local coalition, Lindy Cares, and the Program Director, Anthony Ferlito, representing the board of directors of the youth center. The kids had a blast and were excited about sharing their thoughts and views, which will be compiled by Karina and presented for action

planning to the board of directors. Since Lindy Cares was incorporated in 2013 and registered as a 501 C 3 not-for-profit community coalition, the first lesson learned was that if you want to serve the needs of a specific population, it’s essential to take the time to ask them what they need. More to come in 2023 for this exciting new collaboration and partnership. The youth will take an active role in planning and implementing their ideas for programming.

It is estimated that between 10 and 12 percent of all people are left-handed. Although that makes southpaws an undeniable minority, the number of left-handed people is creeping up.

confer an advantage for athletes. Wayne Gretzky, Sandy Koufax and Martina Navratilova are just a few of the many accomplished left-handed sports legends. Sports scientist Florian Loffing with the Institute of Sport Science, University of Oldenburg in Germany found that in sports where there is a short time constraint, lefties appeared to excel. That could be why he found 26 percent of the top male players in table

Health Risks And Benefits

According to a 2010 study published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found those who were left-handed had an increased risk for dyslexia, ADHD and certain mood disorders. It could be tied to the hemispheres of the brain and how 30 percent of left-

handed people are partial to the right hemisphere or have no dominant hemisphere for language functioning.

Conversely, lefties can bounce back from stroke or other brain-related injuries more readily than righties, according to data published in 2015 in Scientific Reports. A study published in Laterality found that left-handed people are less likely to suffer arthritis and ulcers.

More Creative

Lefties are more likely to be artistic or innovative. Research published in the American Journal of Psychology found there is some evidence that lefthanded people are better at divergent thinking, a method of idea generation that explores many possible solutions. The Left-Handers Club, a prolefty advocacy group, also found that left-handed individuals tend to be drawn to careers in the arts, music, sports, and

information-technology fields.

Ambidextrous Inclinations

The world is geared towards being righthanded, with buttons on jackets, doorknobs, desks in school, and more designed with righthanded people in mind. Therefore, many lefties become ambidextrous simply because they have to, according to data published in Reader’s Digest.

The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless strives to end homelessness on Long Island, and to alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The organization’s distribution center where the donations were brought is located at 600 Albany Avenue in Amityville,

and is also known as their boutique. People in need can make an appointment to come to the boutique and leave with clothes and other items, such as non perishable food and personal care products for free. LICH is here to work directly with people in need, as well as with case managers, shelter staff members, school employees, church members and the like who are helping these individuals.

”This organization does so much good and it was a pleasure to contribute towards their important mission,” said Bryn Elliott, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “So many people have clothing and miscellaneous items that they aren’t using, while others are in real need; it’s just a matter of coordinating a collection. However, it’s clear that the holiday spirit helped our drive quite a bit.
