Weddings have a tendency to be expensive endeavors.

According to The Knot’s 2018 Real Weddings Study, the national average cost of a wedding is $33,931. Nearly half of that ($15,439) is spent on the reception venue alone.

As expensive as wedding receptions can be, couples should know that there are many ways to reduce reception costs without sacrificing fun.

1. Choose Foods Wisely Pour over the details of catering costs. The Knot says the average price for catering will be $68 per person. If you opt for an appetizers and cocktails reception, you may be able to shave several dollars off the bill. Look closely at the pricing for buffet versus plated meals.

Buffet service often means having a greater quantity of food on hand, which could drive up the cost. Find out if the catering hall can work

with your budget to provide cost-conscious options, like familiar comfort foods instead of gourmet fare.

2. Serve A Custom-Made Cocktail A themed drink, such as punch or a classic spirit with a reimagined, weddingfriendly name, can be less expensive than offering full open bar service. Some couples also opt to pay for only wine and beer rather than a full open bar that includes liquor and mixed drinks.

3. Book A Weeknight Weekend weddings are easier on guests’ schedules, but not on couples’ budgets.

Couples can save thousands of dollars by hosting weeknight weddings instead of weekend affairs. Book the venue from Monday through Friday, as even Sunday prices have escalated. The further away from the weekend, the lower the prices are.

The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility.

Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need.

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more.

The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened.

When someone becomes

a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

WEDDING FLOWERS - Couples are moving away from traditional centerpieces to floral chandeliers and curtains made of blooms for their weddings.

Move over bouquets and centerpieces, flowers are taking over weddings in a big way. While wedding trends come and go, flowers will always have a place at the wedding table.

The blooms brides and grooms choose and how they decide to display them can say much about the couple’s style. Many modern couples are opting for statement pieces with their flowers to rival the big and bold ideas they’re incorporating elsewhere into their occasions, such as in cakes and clothing. In fact, floral designer Tom Uberuaga says traditional hurricane vase centerpieces are outdated and only focus the eye on the middle of the table. First Boater Safety Course Under Brianna’s Law

The Village of Lindenhurst hosted the first Boating Safety Course of the year since the enactment of “Brianna’s Law,” which took effect on January 1, 2020. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 01-04 presented the course at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Center. Those who attended received a special visit from Gina Costa-Lieneck, the Long

Island mom responsible for helping to make the water ways safer. After Gina’s 11-year old daughter, Brianna, was the victim of a fatal boating accident in 2005, she began the work to bring awareness of the need for mandatory education for all boaters and small craft operators.

The new NY State law will phase in requirements that all operators of motorized

watercraft must complete a state-approved boating safety course. This new rule is designed to help reduce the amount of preventable accidents on the water.

Special thanks to Gina Costa-Lieneck, Lori Novello, of Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary members for making the class a success.

New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) opened its newest cancer care center at 750 Old Country Road, Riverhead on Monday, January 20th, 2020. Located on Long Island’s east end, the center will feature the most advanced cancer treatment on Long Island.

As patients enter this modern, state-of-the-art cancer center, they will be greeted by friendly, professional staff in our luxurious lounge.

The new NYCBS center encompasses numerous amenities and services to patients that provide a comfortable and attentive environment that is more conducive for healing.
