Tis The Season For Giving

On Monday, November 21, 2022, Noelle Lambert and The Bryn Elliott Team launched a Holiday Donation Drive, benefitting the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, an organization that strives to end homelessness on Long Island, and to alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping others, but more specifically assisting the homeless is really important to me,” said Noelle, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “When you strip away all the excess and get down to the basics - the minimum that one should have in order to put their best foot forward every day - what remains is a home, along with food, and the like. There are countless people struggling and facing homelessness right now on Long Island and it just feels like the right thing to do to help them.”

The drive will run through December 19th and has five drop-off locations throughout Long Island. “This year the organization is desperately in need of non perishable food and personal care items,” said Bryn Elliott, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with The Bryn Elliott Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “They’re also looking for clothing, socks and winter coats. We’re hopeful that this drive will make a difference by helping people who need it; especially during the toughest time of the year to be homeless.”

BE IT ENACTED by the Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst as follows:

Chapter 141, Property Maintenance Section 4, Buildings and Structures; Paragraph K, Air Conditioning Units of the Code of the Village of Lindenhurst is hereby amended to read as follows:

§141-4 K. Air Conditioning Units.

Legislative Intent

The Village Board of Trustees has determined that it is

necessary to regulate the location of air conditioning units in Business Districts within the Village. The regulation of such is necessary for the protection and maintenance of the health, safety, and welfare of the inhabitants of the Village. Moreover, the regulation of such is necessary to promote the aesthetic values of the Village and to increase property values. The Village Board of Trustees finds that this Code section is reasonably aimed at achieving this goal and that the governance of the Village will be enhanced by enactment of the regulations set forth in this section.

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

We close out November, the month in which we honor America’s veterans, with some final information about our Charity of the Month, the Ronkonkomabased Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

Among its wide range of mentalhealth-related services, MHAW offers many forms of assistance for veterans in Suffolk County. These offerings address affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support, and other services.

To allow readers to get a humanscale picture of the real-life ways that MHAW supports local veterans in need, here are the stories of “John” and “Mary.”

“John” had served our country for more than eight years as a Marine, including witnessing the aftermath of the Beirut barracks bombings in 1983 that had killed 241 American personnel and dozens of others.

He proceeded to face major difficulty adapting to post-service life, and used food to help him cope. John became significantly overweight and homeless, with a hotel as his residence for two years. It was nearly impossible to find a house that accommodated his needs until he connected with “Housing Our Homeless Heroes,” an initiative that helps veterans regain their sense of independence with supportive housing.

Happily, John is now living in a stabilized environment with dignity and respect.

As a second example, “Mary” had been discharged from the service last August, had no income, nowhere to go, and unfortunately was living in her car. She reached out to the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, run in collaboration with the Economic

Opportunity Council (EOC) of Suffolk, a Patchoguebased social services organization.

Mary worked with the SSVF team to locate and obtain permanent housing. She also worked with a case manager and a health care navigator to apply for the VA’s service-connected disability program, where she was approved for 100-percent compensation. Mary was also connected to the Northport VA Medical Center, where she began receiving health care. In addition, Mary worked with an employment specialist who assisted her with her resume, job search, and interview prep.

As a result, Mary ultimately secured a full-time job. She has expressed her gratefulness to MHAW and to EOC of Suffolk for the critical assistance she received at the time when she needed it most.

After all they have given to America, our veterans deserve support from all of us here in Suffolk County and across the nation. With this in mind, we urge you to play a role in introducing local veterans in need to MHAW.

On Sunday, December 4th, the Village of Lindenhurst will herald the official start of the 2022 Holiday Season when, in partnership with several community organizations, it will host “Winter on Wellwood”!

Beginning at 12:00 PM, the Village, Chamber of Commerce, Business Improvement District, Fire Department, Historical Society, Kiwanis Club, Mayor’s Beautification Society, Memorial Library, and Moose Lodge will turn Village Square Park into a magical, winter wonderland of family fun for all ages!

The festivities will include hot chocolate, cookies, & photo ops with Santa and his winter

friends, holiday shopping & food vendors, an ice carving demonstration, holiday movies, musicians & carolers, and new this year, FREE Carousel rides!

The day’s events will end with the traditional Lindenhurst Fire Department Holiday Parade (kicking of around 4:30), and culminate in the crowning event, the Lindenhurst Historical Society’s 74th Annual Tree Lighting. This year’s honored Tree Lighters will be lifelong Lindenhurst residents, and lifetime Historical Society members, Tom & Maryann Weckerle.

Debut Theater Company Presents “Fly Away Home”

Debut Theater Company is opening its new play, Fly Away Home, on December 2 at BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst at 149 North Wellwood Avenue. The play will run December 2, 3, 9, 10 at 8:00 pm, and December 5 and 11 at 2:00 pm.

In this original comedydrama by Anthony DiFranco, an aging woman who has spent her life running an off-off-Broadway theater tries valiantly to put one last wonderful show on her stage before the creditors close it down. Two young actors pitch in to help her, along with the broody priest from

the rectory next door, his long-suffering housekeeper, and a dauntless nurse. Life, work, art - this is a play about what they are and aren’t. And it is a play that suits the Holiday mood perfectly.

The cast includes Victoria Grazioli, Josie McSwane, Brandon Robinson, Martin Knapp, Missy Roche, and Erin Biener. Direction is by Deborah Rupy.

Northwell Direct, NYPD Announce Finest Care: Free, Confidential Counseling For Police Officers

Northwell Direct and The New York Police Department recently announced a new collaboration that will connect the 36,000 uniformed Members of Service with free, confidential counseling and other mental health services. Finest Care enables officers to call a confidential Northwell Health behavioral health access and navigation center to be assessed and linked to Northwell’s expansive network of psychologists and psychiatrists through the Northwell Direct provider

network*. Northwell Direct is owned by Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health care provider and private employer.

“Northwell Direct is honored to be able to provide New York’s Finest with the highest-quality mental health services available,” said Nick Stefanizzi, CEO of Northwell Direct. “By providing a confidential and easy-to-use navigation service, we’re breaking down barriers and changing how behavioral health is accessed. With Finest Care, the dedicated public

servants of the NYPD will be immediately connected to the help they need by making a simple phone call.”

The 24/7/365-day-a-week call center will be available for all uniformed Members of Service and all calls will be received and triaged by trained nurses and masterlevel therapists. If a Member of Service is experiencing an acute crisis, the nurse or therapist will be able to arrange for an appropriate and immediate medical response, including the dispatch of an ambulance or access to emergency telepsychiatry services.

“We are excited to be able to increase police officer access to Northwell’s stellar behavioral therapy teams, and wide choice of venues, helping us provide Finest Care, everywhere,” said Eli Kleinman, MD, MPH, NYPD chief surgeon.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County’s Annual Holiday Lightshow Expands Its Annual Celebrations

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and County Executive Steve Bellone are excited to announce the Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will be returning to Smith Point County Park in Shirley for the 19th consecutive year. This year, the drive-thru event which features more than a mile of illuminated holiday-themed displays, will take place through December 30th. In addition to the annual drive-thru holiday attraction, new to this year’s event, GSSC will also create an incredible walk-through Enchanted Forest and Holiday Village featuring 200ft light displays, photos with Santa, a picnic area for s’mores, music, and games at Southaven County Park in Yaphank. Along with being a favorite holiday attraction among families from throughout Long Island, the seasonal event serves as an important fundraiser for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to help expand the access girls throughout Suffolk County have to the empowering Girl Scout experience.

“The Girl Scout Holiday Light Show is an event we look forward to every year, and we are delighted to bring it back for families across Long Island to enjoy this holiday season,” said Tammy Severino, CEO and President of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “We are thrilled to be able to expand our annual traditions by introducing our new Enchanted Forest at Southaven County Park, which

will host even more fun family activities. We hope everyone will come to join us in this amazing holiday tradition and are looking forward to creating new memories with all of you!”

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s annual holiday light show is a drive-through show along a 1.5-mile trail at Smith Point County Park Campgrounds filled with dazzling holiday light displays, created by our Girl Scouts, Staff, and members of our communities throughout Suffolk County. The holiday event features more than 100 fun artistic, holiday-themed displays. This year, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County have added 5 exhibits that were conceptualized by local, award-winning Girl Scouts.

“I am so excited to welcome back the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Holiday Light Show for the 19th year in a row,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “This year’s show is expected to be even bigger and better with multiple exciting new holiday attractions. Not only is this a fun family tradition, it also serves as a critical fundraising event to ensure girls throughout the county are able to reach their full potential.”

The Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will be open daily through December 30th, excluding December 24th and 25th, from 5 pm to 9 pm. The Enchanted Forest will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 5 pm to 9 pm

through December 18th and will run from December 26th to December 30th.

Since outgrowing its space at Camp Edey in Bayport, in 2016, the fundraising event has been held at Smith Point County Park. The light displays are assembled and built-in part, by GSSC staff and dedicated volunteers from PSEG Long Island, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1049 and Local 25, and the Long Island Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. Proceeds from the Holiday Light Show and Enchanted Forest benefit girl leadership programs as well as provide financial assistance for girls to join Girl Scouts and attend our summer camp program.

illnesses in our communities, and they can have a severe impact on functioning and quality of life,” said Manish Sapra, MD, executive director of the behavioral health service line at Northwell Health.

“Police officers face unique stressors not seen in the general public. We are confident this program will help reduce stigma associated with seeking and accepting help.”
