Town Of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta Launches Chamber Of Commerce Collaborative

The Town of Babylon initiated its Chamber of Commerce Collaborative with a meeting on Thursday, November 10 between the executive board members of various chambers of commerce located throughout the Town. This new initiative aims to bring together the common interest of the Town’s chambers to launch joint events and programming, including events with the SBA, throughout the year with the ultimate goal of enhancing small business growth and generating more networking opportunities.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and as revitalization continues to be a priority within the Town, it is imperative that we collaborate with one another to maximize benefits for local

businesses,” said Town of Babylon Councilman and Small Business Committee Chairman Anthony Manetta. “The Chamber Collaborative effort will bring together new ideas, help to solve common problems and serve as a thinktank to bolster the growth of small businesses in the Town of Babylon.”

The Town of Babylon Chamber Collaborative also serves to produce a dialogue of shared ideas and improvement between the chambers.

Part of these discussions includes how to increase membership and small business participation and drive new revenue growth for members.

President Richard Zimmer, North Babylon Chamber President Garrett Simulcik, Farmingdale Chamber President Joe Garcia, Copiague Chamber First Vice President Pete Buccino and Babylon Village Chamber Vice President of Events Ben Stein.

“This effort led by Councilman Manetta is much needed throughout the Town of Babylon,” said Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce President JoAnn Boettcher. “It will not only help our small businesses with new opportunities but allows the chambers to work together more closely to build more robust organizations.”

Farmingdale Chamber President Joe Garcia applauded the new initiative, “This is one of the only Towns I know of who in a coordinated effort

brought all their chambers to work together. This can make a big impact on growing our small businesses and foster true

collaboration.”

The Town of Babylon looks forward to the Chamber Collaborative and the cooperation

enabled by it producing bountiful opportunities for growth and success for the Town’s residents and small businesses.

Amid Persistent Inflation, Innovations In Medicare Advantage Can Help New York Beneficiaries Save Money In 2023

The latest economic data show that many of us are paying more for essential goods like groceries and fuel, and prices for many everyday products continue to climb, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, posing a challenge for New York seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries who often live on fixed incomes.

On Sunday, Oct. 23, the Lindenhurst Union Free School District hosted the USBands New York Regional Championships at Lindenhurst Middle School. Nine bands totaling well over 500 students took to the field in competition. As the host school, Lindenhurst took the field last and put on a fiercely energetic and flawless

that earned them first place in Division III-A with a score of 87.9, winning

awards for best music, best visual, best overall effect and best color guard. In addition, they won best individual music in the entire show.

Bi-lingual health insurance enrollers who specialize in assisting adults and children who are blind or disabled or anyone over the age of 65 are just

Lindenhurst Youth Center Received $2,100

RECEIVED $2,100 - The Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce and the OLPH Knights of Columbus held their second restaurant and pub crawl in downtown Lindenhurst at all the local places. It was decided early on by the leadership to support a local organization, and the donation was matched by All Town Towing! It is another example of cooperation between the community organizations and the local businesses unified for the betterment of the Village. The

ceremony was held at Rip Tides Cocktails and Grille.

Lindenhurst Seniors Named Commended Students In National Merit Scholarship Program

Three Lindenhurst Union Free School District seniors have been named commended students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

At the end of September, about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 highest scorers were chosen for this honor based on their PSAT/

National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test results.

All three students boast impressive academic résumés, including enrollment in numerous Advanced Placement courses, integral involvement in clubs and memberships in a plethora of honor societies.

The students selected

to receive this honor are Raymond Fleury, Mikolaj Pankau and Lauren Walker. The selected students received letters of commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic performance and are candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporate businesses.

A group of military veterans who are PSEG Long Island employees recently took to the water to raise awareness of mental health issues afflicting many veterans. The group was among 22 veterans participating in the fifth “22 PTSD Awareness Challenge” (22PAC) event, an arduous, 22-mile kayaking trip from Bridgeport, Conn. to Port Jefferson to help shine a light on veteran PTSD and end veteran suicide.

In teams of two, the 22 veterans operated pedal-powered kayaks in a physically demanding, five-hour cross-Sound journey. The hot sun, humidity and headwinds made the trip that much more difficult.

The number 22 is significant for this event because it is the estimated number of military veterans who take their own lives each day.

Here’s what the employees had to say about the event:

Devin McLaughlin of East Moriches, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, participated for the second

time this year.

“Some people I met in the service are no longer with us because they lost their battles with depression,” said McLaughlin. “In a small way, doing this ride helps me think of them and lets me know I’m doing my part for them and for other veterans facing challenges.”

Michael Probst and Tom Leuschner, both U.S. Army veterans, are co-workers and Holbrook residents who supported the cause this year.

“I did the 22 PAC for my brothers and sisters in the armed forces and to support a great cause,” said Probst. “I hope this event helped to bring awareness to this issue because 22 veterans a day taking their own lives is completely unacceptable and preventable.”

“I was so proud to be a part of this great cause,” said Leuschner. “This is the least I could do for our veterans who have done so much for us.”

Tom Sketch of Seaford, a U.S. Navy veteran, was one of the kayakers.

“It’s a great event to bring awareness to the

challenges veterans face after their service is completed,” said Sketch. “It was a little more difficult than I thought it would be but we had beautiful weather and I am glad I was able to complete it!”

Matt Testagrose of Shoreham, a U.S. Army veteran, participated in the event.

“It was great to see my fellow veterans and coworkers come together to show support for PTSD awareness,” he said.

Leo Tolson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Center Moriches, said, “The trip was exhausting but I wanted to do something to help raise awareness of how many veterans need help.”

PSEG Long Island is proud to count military veterans among its workforce. Its employees are dedicated to providing customers with safe, reliable power and also committed to the communities they serve by engaging in community service activities and raising funds to support and help their neighbors.

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW)offers a wide range of assistance to veterans in Suffolk County, home to more veterans than any county in the state. These offerings address affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support and other services.

In this article, we’ll look at Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), an initiative in which MHAW collaborates with the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. SSVF programs provide housing and support services to eligible, low-income veteran families who are homeless, or who are about to become homeless.

Regrettably, America’s veterans require a number of support services. The National Library of Medicine recently estimated that up to 16 percent of U.S. service members who had been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq now have post-traumatic stress disorder or depression. Their other health concerns include suicide, traumatic brain injury, substance use and instances of interpersonal violence.

While Long Island has made significant strides in addressing homelessness among veterans in recent years, “Suffolk County still has its population of homeless veterans,” said Marcelle Leis, a retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant who serves as MHAW’s Director of Veteran Services. “They’re living in train stations or they might be living in the woods. Yet even though they’re in need, these individuals often don’t trust government or community agencies enough to step forward and request assistance. And they often don’t feel safe going into shelters.”

The United Veterans Council, along with the Village of Lindenhurst, sponsored this year’s Veterans Day Remembrance Service, held at the Gazebo in Village Park.

issues, poverty and their need for supportive systems.

Some SSVF services include personal financial

planning, credit counseling and income support services. Qualifying veterans may also obtain legal assistance, housing counseling and healthcare navigation.

In relation to employment, SSVF also offers vocational and rehabilitation services through the state’s Department of Labor Employment Training Assistance by way of Suffolk County’s One-Stop Employment Center.

Also, SSVF provides case management services, as well as peer support and outreach services through MHAW’s Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Veterans may also receive assistance obtaining VA and other public benefits though the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

SSVF can also help veterans with temporary financial assistance in the form of rental assistance, utility bills, security or utility deposits, moving costs and childcare support. Eligible veterans may be single, or part of a family in which the head of the household, or spouse, is a veteran.

Once again, Lindenhurst honored the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. The event brought together local veterans of each

branch of the military, and included prayers, soloists Gerry Ferretti and Sinead Buckley, the playing of taps, and the traditional wreath laying at the Lindenhurst WWI monument located on South Wellwood Avenue.

The Veterans Day holiday grew out of the commemoration of Armistice Day, when WWI fighting between the allied

countries and Germany ended in the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “It is right to pause and honor all those who have selflessly served in the United States Armed Forces. We especially remember all those that sacrificed it all for our freedom.”

As we enter the holiday season, and the world becomes a little more hectic, hopefully in a good way, remember the words from the 1927 poem below, Desiderata, by Max Ehrmann.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
