Hosted by the Copiague Chamber of Commerce, the fun-filled, petfriendly Festival recently took place in September in Babylon’s beautiful Tanner Park. During this exciting weekend, Tanner Park was magically transformed with plenty of amazing entertainment, events, and surprises including a carnival, plenty of vendors, live music, a Pet Expo in the Park, custom car shows, and much more. With the support of the Town of Babylon, our elected officials, our sponsors, and the local community, the festival has become an annual tradition. In coordinating its 75th Anniversary celebration with that of the Village of Lindenhurst Centennial anniversary, the Society will sponsor a self-guided tour of the graves of Lindenhurst’s American Civil War Veterans interred at Breslau Cemetery

Nearly forty Civil War veterans, some of which were present at Appomattox; witnesses to General Lee’s surrender to General Grant, ending the 4 year long American Civil War, called Breslau and Lindenhurst home. Thirty three of those veterans were laid to rest in Breslau Cemetery.

To help visitors envision what life was like for Civil War soldiers, veterans and civilians, the 119th New York Willis Company H. Civil War living historians

along with Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) re-enactors will be on hand to provide context and authenticity to help educate and inform visitors about the Civil War. Graves of the Civil War Veterans will be designated with markers providing their biographical background and experience. Docents will be available to assist visitors.

There are procedures to take at the scene of an accident; call police, exchange information, file a claim, etc.

But, what do you do AFTER you have left the scene of an accident? What are your next steps to get a repair and keep your expenses down?

The first obstacle you will face is filing your claim. Do you file with your insurer or the other party? If they hit you, you will want them to pay for the cost of repairs, a rental car and incidental expenses. Ideally, you will file with them and they’ll immediately take over responsibility for your expenses. Of course, life is not ideal. You should expect delays. Expect them. Don’t be impatient. The other company MUST reach their insured and

debrief them. Then, they must go through steps to assign responsibility, whether fully or in part. And, if the case is not cut and dried, the process may take years.

If you are injured, then you MUST file with your own insurance company. New York is a No-Fault State. This is a misnomer.

No-Fault means that, regardless of who is at fault, your own insurer will take care of your medical claims.

If you file the Collision claim with your company then they may go after the other company (a process called subrogation), but you will have to lay out your deductible and for rental expenses until a decision is made.

The Health Benefits Of Regular Walking

Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll through your neighborhood or a power-walk in the park, the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, says taking part in physical activity is one of the best ways to manage stress, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and boost your mood.

Improved technology and the growing popularity of fitness applications, electronic wearables and step counters have made counting steps an easy way to count health benefits, as noted through a growing body of scientific research. A study presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2021 (EPI), found that:

•Study participants who took more steps in short spurts lived longer,

regardless of how many steps they had in longer, uninterrupted bouts. The benefits leveled off at about 4,500 steps a day in short spurts.

•Compared to no daily steps, each initial increase of 1,000 steps a day was associated with a 28% decrease in death during the follow-up period.

•A 32% decrease in death was noted in participants who took more than 2,000 steps daily in uninterrupted bouts.

Middle-aged people who walked the most steps-perday had a 43% lower risk of diabetes and a 31% lower risk of high blood pressure, compared to those with the fewest steps, according to research presented at the Association’s 2020 EPI Conference. For women in the study, each 1,000-step interval resulted in a 13% lower risk of obesity, and those with the highest step count were 61% less likely to have obesity, compared

to women who walked the least.

People who took at least 7,000 steps a day had a 50% to 70% lower risk of dying compared with people who took fewer than 7,000 steps a day, according to a study published in September in the journal JAMA Open Network. Researchers found that a higher daily step count (over 10,000 steps) lowered the risk of premature death from any cause among Black and white middle-aged women and men.

“Walking is a great way to improve your health and your mental outlook, and it doesn’t take a lot of expensive sporting equipment to do it. October Fundraising Event Helps Pay For Funerals Of Loved Ones Who Died From Drug Overdose & Provides Grief And Loss Services For Families

After her grandson Gabriel died of an overdose in 2010, Grandmother

Paulette Phillippe remembers how her family had the additional struggle to pay for funeral expenses. That’s why in 2020, to mark Gabriel’s 10th anniversary in heaven, she formed Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) to help families in need on Long Island pay for funeral and burial services after a loved one dies from an opioid poisoning or substance use disorder. In 2021, GGT joined forces with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), together they have raised more than $100,000, assisting nearly 30 families to provide their loved ones one final gift.

local law which establishes a moratorium on certain uses in the Business District between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

The Village Board of Trustees had enacted the moratorium so that it might have sufficient opportunity to evaluate the permitted uses in the Business District and their hours of operation and determine whether the hours of operation of permitted uses in the Business District should be statutorily amended, altered, modified, expanded or repealed as part and parcel of a plan to continue to revitalize the area without negatively impacting its residential neighbors. That moratorium is set to expire on August 11, 2023 and must be extended to allow the aforestated review to continue. An extension to the moratorium would also permit the Board of Trustees to consider whether buffer zones or distance restrictions are appropriate. This extended moratorium will provide an opportunity for the Village Board of Trustees to evaluate the Code changes needed without the possibility of new businesses opening that might conflict with the plan being developed.

The Village Board has, therefore, determined that an extension to the moratorium be established prohibiting any new permitted uses which operate between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. in the Business District. This moratorium shall be geographically limited in application to all properties within the Business District zoning classification. In establishing this extension to the moratorium the Board has also considered:

1. The need for conserving the value of buildings and land and the need to encourage the most appropriate use of land.

2. The need to attract retail business of such a character as to encourage, foster and promote the revitalization of the Business District while at the same time mitigating any detrimental impact on surrounding residential properties.

3. The need to ensure adequate parking and lessen congestion while balancing the need for business growth.

4. To provide adequate light and air.

5. To ensure physical compatibility with surrounding uses.

6. The need to reduce noise, litter, traffic and lighting which detrimentally impacts residential areas adjoining

Business District property.

7. To encourage historic preservation.

Section 2. Prohibitions.

Any permitted Business District use which is open for customers, or clientele between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., excluding bars, taverns or restaurants within the Business District shall not be a permitted use.

Section 3. Exemptions.

This local law shall not apply to bars, taverns or restaurants which are otherwise regulated by the special permit authority or existing businesses uses in operation at the effective date of this local law to the extent such uses are not in compliance herewith and otherwise legally permitted.

Section 4 Imposition of Moratorium.

a. For a period running from the effective date of this law until August 11, 2024, no application for the construction, erection, maintenance, or change of use to a use which is prohibited herein may be filed, accepted, or processed. For the purpose of this law, an application shall be deemed to mean any request for official action by the Board of Trustees, or other boards, departments, or agencies of the Village of Lindenhurst. No use which is prohibited herein and not otherwise exempt from the application of this local law may be maintained, notwithstanding §193-90 of the Code of the Village of Lindenhurst.

b. The Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst shall have the power to vary or modify the application of the provisions hereof after public hearing by resolution of the Village Board, in its absolute and sole discretion, provided that such variance, or modification is consistent with the Village zoning plan, and with the health, safety, morals and general welfare of the Village.

Section 5. Effective Date. This Local Law shall take effect on filing with the Secretary of State and expire on August 11, 2024.

Section 1. Purpose.

The purpose of this local law is to extend the expiration date of Local Law 4 of 2022 from September 30, 2023 to September 30, 2024. The purpose of Local Law 4 of 2022 and this Local Law is to promote and protect the public health, safety, and welfare of the Village of Lindenhurst, by enacting a local law which establishes a moratorium on Massage Parlors and Foot Spas in the Business District for a period of one year.

The Village of Lindenhurst has put forth a significant effort to support and revitalize the Business District. As part of these efforts the Village has completed numerous infrastructure improvements to attract business and enhance the appearance of the downtown, including the addition of brick pavers, road reconstruction, drainage, parking, decorative street lighting, planters, and recreational and cultural opportunities. Numerous new projects have enhanced the appearance and character of the Business District Village wide. The Board of Trustees has also enacted certain zoning amendments to create a more desirable and attractive Business District including the addition of multiple family residences. The Board of Trustees finds that careful consideration is also required to ensure the compatibility of Business District with the surrounding residential community. The competitive local business environment is spawning more and more businesses, in particular, a proliferation of business whose primary business purpose is massage. The Board is concerned that given the Business District’s close proximity to residential areas that certain businesses of this nature are of such a character that they will detrimentally impact the quality of life of the surrounding businesses and residences. The Board finds that such uses are often the source of criminal activity, such as unlicensed practice

and prostitution resulting in quality of life complaints. These complaints negatively impact a community. As such, particular consideration must be given as to the regulation of massage related business operations.

The Board of Trustees has enacted the moratorium so that it might have sufficient opportunity to evaluate the permitted uses in the Business District and determine whether the use of Massage Parlors and Foot Spas should be statutorily amended, altered, modified, expanded, or repealed as part and parcel of a plan to continue to revitalize the area without negatively impacting the community.

The moratorium is set to expire on September 30, 2023 and must be extended to allow the afforested review to continue. An extension to the moratorium would also permit the Board of Trustees to consider whether buffer zones or distance restrictions are appropriate to avoid proliferation of this use and encourage diversity in the Business District. This moratorium will provide an opportunity for the Village Board of Trustees to evaluate the Code changes needed without the possibility of new businesses opening that might conflict with the plan being developed. The Village Board has, therefore, determined that a moratorium be established prohibiting any new uses which business purpose is massage in the Business District. This moratorium shall be geographically limited in application to all properties within the Business District zoning classification. In establishing this moratorium, the Board has also considered:

The 30th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) of Eastern Long Island took place on Sunday, Oct. 1 at Grangabel Park in Riverhead. MSABC is a celebration of courage and hope, and a movement that unites communities to end breast cancer as we know it, for everyone.

Over the past three

decades, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’s 3- to 5-mile walks have collectively grown into the nation’s largest and most impactful breast cancer movement – providing a supportive community for survivors, caregivers and families alike. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer funds lifesaving breast cancer research and

is committed to advancing health equity through essential programs and services.

At this year’s event, there were more than 350 attendees and a total of $115,000 was raised.
