MEMORIAL FUND RECEIVES FUNDING - Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund’s Gun Violence Intervention Programs receive funding award from Senator Brooks. It was a poignant moment when Senator John Brooks (SD-8) presented a funding award of $50,000 to the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund, Inc. in support of their gun violence intervention programs.Established following the school shooting that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund was named in memory of Scott Beigel, a geography teacher at the school who was killed protecting his students. The Fund’s mission and purpose is to help send atrisk youth who have been affected by gun violence to a sleep-away camp every summer. A native of Long Island, Scott’s life was deeply impacted by his regular attendance at sleep-away camp, and the community and lifelong friends he built there, so his family decided that creating a sleep-away camp where at-risk youth could be exposed to alternatives to gun violence would be the best way to honor his memory.Afierce champion of common-sense gun reform, Senator Brooks lauded the work the Schulmans are carrying out through the Fund, stating, “What began as an unimaginable tragedy — one no parent should ever have to endure — has turned into a beacon of hope. All you have to do is look at the children that they have already been able to help — some of whom shake so much from excitement due to the outpouring of love, trust, and support they receive at these camps from the counselors, and from the Schulmans themselves.
Kids who have taken the courses offered, and who have shown good behavior throughout the year, are invited back to continue their participation in the camps to cultivate the important, and ultimate, goal of building friendships and a community of support — just as Scott had done.

The Village of Lindenhurst has put forth a significant effort to support and revitalize the Business District. As part of these efforts the Village has completed numerous infrastructure improvements to attract business and enhance the appearance of the downtown, including the addition of brick pavers, road reconstruction, drainage, parking, decorative street lighting, planters, and recreational and cultural opportunities. Numerous new projects have enhanced the appearance and character of the Business District Village wide. The Board of Trustees has also enacted certain zoning amendments to create a more desirable and attractive Business District including the addition of multiple family residences. The Board of Trustees finds that careful consideration is also required to ensure the compatibility of Business District with the surrounding residential community. The competitive local business environment is spawning more and more businesses, in particular, a proliferation of business whose primary business purpose is massage. The Board is concerned that given the Business District’s close proximity to residential areas that certain businesses of this nature are of such a character that they will detrimentally impact the quality of life of the surrounding businesses and residences. The Board finds that such uses are often the source of criminal activity, such as unlicensed practice and prostitution resulting in quality of life complaints. These complaints negatively impact a community. As such, particular consideration must be given as to the regulation of massage related business Theoperations.Board of Trustees enacts this moratorium so that it might have sufficient opportunity to evaluate the permitted uses in the Business District and determine whether the use of Massage Parlors and Foot Spas should be statutorily amended, altered, modified, expanded, or repealed as part and parcel of a plan to continue to revitalize the area without negatively impacting the community. A moratorium would also permit the Board of Trustees to consider whether buffer zones or distance restrictions are appropriate to avoid proliferation of this use and encourage diversity in the Business District. This moratorium will provide an opportunity for the Village Board of Trustees to evaluate the Code changes needed without the possibility of new businesses opening that might conflict with the plan being developed. The Village Board has, therefore, determined that a moratorium be established prohibiting any new uses which business purpose is massage in the Business District. The purpose of this Local Law is to extend the expiration date of Local Law 2 of 2020 from August 11, 2022 to August 11, 2023. The purpose of Local Law 2 of 2020 and this Local Law is to promote and protect the public health, safety and welfare of the Village of Lindenhurst by enacting a local law which establishes a moratorium on certain uses in the Business District between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. The Village Board of Trustees had enacted the moratorium so that it might have sufficient opportunity to evaluate the permitted uses in the Business District and their hours of operation and determine whether the hours of operation of permitted uses in the Business District should be statutorily amended, altered, modified, expanded or repealed as part and parcel of a plan to continue to revitalize the area without negatively impacting its residential neighbors. That moratorium is set to expire on August 11, 2022 and must be extended to allow the aforestated review to continue. An extension to the moratorium would also permit the Board of Trustees to consider whether buffer zones or distance restrictions are appropriate. This extended moratorium will provide an opportunity for the Village Board of Trustees to evaluate the Code changes needed without the possibility of new businesses opening that might conflict with the plan being Thedeveloped.Village Board has, therefore, determined that an extension to the moratorium be established prohibiting any new permitted uses which operate between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. in the Business District. This moratorium shall be geographically limited in application to all properties within the Business District zoning classification. The Lindenhurst Fire Department celebrated the “wet down” dedication of their new fireboat now in service. The Firebrand 28 fireboat will be docked at the Lindenhurst Village Marina, and will reduce response time to water rescue, emergency medical, and fire incidents within the Lindenhurst canals and Great South Bay. The new addition will allow for increased pumping capacity forMayorfirefighters.Michael Lavorata said, “The fireboat is a much needed asset to the Lindenhurst Community, and the surrounding area. The LFD was able to purchase the fireboat thanks to a New York State grant from Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, and we are very grateful for her support of our fire Mayordepartment.”Lavorata added, “The fireboat is state-ofthe-art for rescues and emergencies. It is tax dollars being spent, but it is not local tax dollars, which will help our budget. Thank you also to the men and women of the Lindenhurst Fire Department for their ongoing, selfless service.”

The Charity of the Month for September is Harmony Cafe
Ruth Dulcide White Liebl, formerly of Lindenhurst, died July 3, 2022, at Page Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Fort Myers, Florida. Ruth was the wife of the late Otto Matthias Liebl whose family owned and operated Liebl Hardware store in Lindenhurst for decades. She was 91 years old.Following the sale of the hardware store, the couple retired to Cape Coral, Florida in 2002. Mr. Liebl died on December 20, 2014. In preparation for being separated by death, Ruth and Otto requested that once they were both gone, they be buried together for eternity. The soulmates will have this wish fulfilled on September 17 in Saint Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale. A private service will be held. The family was assisted by Fuller Metz Cremation and Funeral Services of Cape Coral, Florida.

Cafe, grew up in a working-class family, where money was tight and food insecurity was sometimes a cause of stress. Her vision for this organization is to have a storefront cafe that will serve healthy meals based upon a donation model.
Although they do not have a physical cafe yet, since they started in 2016, they have hosted countless “meal events”, primarily at the VFW Hall on Edwards Street in Patchogue. Their meal events are socially engaging events, usually running for about 2.5 hours multiple times a month. They are meant to bring the community together, while serving anyone who attends a fresh healthy meal. This nonprofit is also licensed to offer the FEAST Program. The FEAST Program is a comprehensive health program, which offers in-person classes. FEAST stands for Food Education, Access, Support and Together. “We at Harmony Cafe believe that a healthy life consists of whole foods, whole people and whole communities,” said Rosemarie. “However, many people don’t have access to healthy fresh food, don’t have a strong support system and feel isolated from the community. Unhealthy diets is among some of the key contributors to the dramatic rise in obesity and dietary diseases affecting people in our country today. In order to address these issues, the FEAST Program serves parents or heads or households through our comprehensive 12-week Wellness Program. It is a very successful program!” Their next FEAST Program begins on September 13, 2022 and will take place at their office, located at 20 Medford Avenue, Suite 108, Patchogue, NY 11772 from 6:00PM8:00PM.
