CLASSES START THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 8 2019 The preschool program is run by the William Rall PTA and is a great way for your child to become acquainted with going to elementary school. During the program, children will practice basic kindergarten skills, and will learn colors and shapes, create alphabet based art projects, learn fun songs and have snack and storytime. They will also get to visit the lunchroom and order breakfast, have circle time in a kindergarten classroom, tour the school, and get to visit the nurse and other special classrooms throughout the year. The program ends in a cap and gown Preschool graduation in the school’s auditorium!

Recently, the Village of Lindenhurst Summer Camp concluded its program with the annual Awards Day ceremony.

Many well-behaved campers received trophies after concluding their summer of fun at the Village

Park. Mayor Mike Lavorata praised the campers, their families and the camp staff for their spirit of cooperation this summer.

The highlight of the day was the presentation of the Edward F. Kienle Memorial Campers of the

year. This year’s winners of the prestigious award are Danielle Steinmann and AJ Herig, who were both acknowledged as being cooperative, thoughtful, well-liked and helpful.

The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year.

Lindenhurst Village Camp Awards Day

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

SIMULATING A TORNADO SPIN - During Copiague School District’s elementary summer school program, students in Carly Lopez’s class participated in a hands-on STEM activity. TAKING FLIGHT - Fourth graders in the elementary summer school program at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District are using their STEM skills to design and test their own rocket ships. They were tasked with creating their own unique ship out of a soda bottle. After the design phase was complete, the students headed out to the field behind the school for launch. The bottles were filled with water and each student pumped their ship full of air as they flew high in the air.

There are important changes to the school tax relief program that every homeowner should know.

Changes To The Star Program!

• If you own your own home, it’s your primary residence, and your income is $500,000 or less, you are eligible for the Basic STAR Program.

• If your income is greater than $250,000 and less than or equal to $500,000, you will receive a check for the STAR credit instead of a reduction on your school tax bill.

• If your income is $250,000 or less and you are currently receiving the STAR exemption (a direct reduction on your school tax bill in the form of a property tax exemption), you can choose to register for the STAR credit to receive a check instead.

• The STAR exemption program is now closed to new applicants. New applicants can only register for the STAR credit.

• Homeowners with income greater than $250,000 and less than or equal to $500,000 who currently receive the STAR exemption need not take any additional action to start receiving the STAR credit in the form of a check.

• If your income is $250,000 or less and currently receive the STAR exemption but want to receive the STAR credit instead, you have to register with the NY State Department of Taxation and Finance to make the switch.

• The taxing authority is giving homeowners an incentive to switch to the STAR credit. STAR credits may increase as much as 2% each year, but the value of the STAR exemption savings cannot increase.

• Enhanced STAR is provided to homeowners age 65 and older for their primary residence if their income is $86,300 or less for the 2019-2020 school year.

• Enhanced STAR recipients are now required to enroll in the Income Verification Program (IVP).

• Homeowners need not register every year for the STAR Program. Once registered, they are automatically reviewed for eligibility each year.
