Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home.

While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) welcomes oncologist, Nicole Carreau, MD to its practice. Dr. Carreau will be practicing at 12 East 86th Street, Central Park.

“I will bring expertise in the use of immunotherapy.”

Medicine has been Dr. Carreau’s passion and inspired her to pursue it.

“I was always interested in science and I wanted to build a career in which I could make a difference in people’s lives every day,” said Dr. Carreau.

Dr. Carreau’s research in both Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients included leading a team of investigators across 17 centers in the US and Canada. Her research could allow patients who were previously considered transplant-ineligible to become candidates for the procedure, resulting in

“There are so many subtypes of lymphoma, each of which behaves differently. It affects people of all ages and both genders,” said Dr. Carreau.

She credits her experience from practicing at three locations: Perlmutter Cancer Center, Bellevue Hospital, and the Manhattan “VA” Medical Center.

Dr. Carreau also credits her skills and expertise during college and medical school. At the University Of Connecticut School

Of Medicine, she attained several honors, being the recipient of the Carl F. Hinz Jrs. Scholars in Medicine Award.

During her residency at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Carreau was the recipient of the Student Teaching Award and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. As Chief Fellow at New York University, Dr. Carreau received the ASH Abstract Achievement Award.

Children performed on a stage flanked by rainbow balloon displays. Posters throughout the gymnasium had inspiration messages like “Everything starts with a dream” and “Keep calm and dream big.”

began, guests enjoyed a photo slideshow set to music featuring class photos and pictures of activities throughout the year. Dr. Collins had high praise for the students, who worked hard this year and completed the first step on their journey to becoming Amityville Memorial High School’s Class of 2031.

Alfredo Torres, MD Joins NYCBS Alfredo Torres, MD has joined the team of medical oncologists at New York Cancer & Blood Specialists.

Dr. Torres will be practicing at our Port Jefferson, Setauket, and Smithtown locations. Dr. Torres is a third generation physician in his family and knew early on, that medicine was his passion.

A native of Venezuela, Dr. Torres credits the skills he has developed to limited access to medical resources.

“I grew up in a country filled with opportunities and hope. There were highly professional and skillful physicians, but Venezuela always experienced scarcity in medical technology, diagnostic resources, and infrastructure,” said Dr. Torres. “I had to rely purely on clinical diagnosis to provide the right medical care for my patients.”

He attended medical school at Universidad de Carabobo, where he was a research assistant investigating immunology.

Dr. Torres came to the United States because of its innovations in hematologyoncology. “I believe that my training and now practicing as a physician specialized in

Dr. Torres experienced his own heartbreak with cancer; his grandmother passing from colon cancer and his grandfather from leukemia. “This has allowed me to empathize with my patients, truly relate to their diagnosis, and become an ally in their journey to finding a cure and/or improving their quality of life,” said Dr. Torres. He believes that each patient and diagnosis is different, and providing holistic support is needed for diagnosis and treatment.

While residing in

Venezuela, Dr. Torres was a volunteer for the Funcamama-Breast Cancer Foundation and Fundación de Niños con VIH. In the US, Dr. Torres completed his residency and fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was awarded “best poster presentation” of ACP Journal club presentations.

He was also the grant recipient from the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation for Use of Virtual Reality to decrease chemotherapyassociated anxiety, symptom distress, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

Welcomed Into Honor Societies The end of the school year is a time of celebration and reflection and as such, award ceremonies were held throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recognizing student academic successes.

Lindenhurst High School recently inducted its newest members into the National Honor Society.

Holding the celebratory lit candles, the inductees streamed into the school’s cafeteria to join parents, friends and teachers for the special

ceremony and celebration.

Students of this year’s National Honor Society Executive Board gave speeches and conducted the official induction of new members. Principal Dr. Clinton Grant and administrators congratulated the students. Speeches were made for leadership, character, service and scholarship, the qualities that placed the students in this prestigious group.

During a special ceremony at the Lindenhurst Middle

School, 53 sixth- and seventh-graders were also welcomed as the newest members of the National Junior Honor Society. In order to be considered for induction, students must maintain a 90 average, show leadership and participate in extracurricular activities.

During the ceremony, students Adam Herig, Riley Colford, Michael DiGuiseppe, Sarah Murphy and Lauren Walker explained the pillars that the NJHS is built on.
