AN ALL-STAR SEASON - The Lindenhurst High School Varsity Baseball team recently completed an outstanding 18-win season. They made it to the Conference 1 Finals, where they lost to powerhouse Commack. Lindenhurst had five players honored with various awards given by the Suffolk County Baseball Coaches Association. It was quite a season for the Lindenhurst team and their All Stars. It was the first time since 2010 that Lindenhurst had two First Team All-Long Island baseball players. Congratulations to all the Bulldog Baseball players for a home run of a season. Medicaid Auto Enrollment Ended

Automatic enrollment for Medicaid recipients has ended. Auto enroll was put in place during the pandemic to ensure continuous health coverage, but now Medicaid, Child Health Plus, and Essential Plan members must re-certify or they will lose coverage. Members of special populations like Aged, Blind, Disabled must also re-certify to keep coverage. Keep LI Covered, a grassroots effort led by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC), in partnership with Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling and the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, wants all

eligible Long Islanders to be aware of their coverage deadlines and what agencies provide FREE re-certification assistance. Call 631-435-3000 to be connected to the appropriate agency.

New York State began mailing recertification notices to enrollees and will continue to do so until June 30, 2024, as each enrollee’s re-certification deadline nears. Enrollees should call the Keep LI Covered phone number – 631435-3000 – to re-certify so they don’t lose coverage.

“We have about 900,000 eligible enrollees on Long Island. It’s a huge

undertaking, but we don’t want anyone who is still eligible for coverage to lose their health insurance simply because they failed to re-certify. The recertification rules were relaxed during COVID, but we are now back to the annual re-certification process,” said Stacy Villagran, Chief Operating Officer, Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council. She is overseeing the island-wide recertification effort that is funded by a grant from the Community Service Society of New York, and its multiple funders who care deeply about this issue. #keepLIcovered.

Lindenhurst Student Artist Named Winner Of The Congressional Art Competition

Lindenhurst High School student Sierra Calderaro from Tara Biscardi’s photography class recently won the annual Congressional Art Competition for District 2. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries.

In recognition of this prestigious honor, Sierra’s work will be displayed at the United States Capitol for one year, and she is invited to the White House for a special luncheon to honor

As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.

The non-profit organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.

“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacrifice so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

further their mission, there are two upcoming events, one online and one in person, which o er a great way to do so.

Giving Bark Thursday: Held on July 13, this is a 24-hour online event geared towards raising awareness and funds for America’s VetDogs. Throughout the day, anyone who makes a donation on their website (up to $30,000) will have their donation matched. Additionally, if you would like to create your own fundraiser, in hopes to raise funds on this special day, you can do so by clicking “Become a Giving Bark Fundraiser” at VetDogs.org/GivingBark.

America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk: You can also help America’s VetDogs make a di erence in the lives of veterans and first responders by participating in the 9th America’s VetDogs Run & Dog Walk, held on July 29 at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. This 5K is an In-Person and Virtual Event and dogs are welcome to join you on your run/walk too! The Benefits of Walking Around Your Neighborhood

With warmer weather and extended hours of daylight, now is the best time of the year to take a walk around your neighborhood. It helps that there are so many wonderful physical and mental health benefits from walking. Here are fun ways to make the most of walking this summer:

Walk with a Friend – If it’s hard to get a walk in by yourself, find a friend to join you. They can be different friends each day or the same friend every day. You can walk your dogs together or catch up with what’s happening in your lives. Thirty minutes a day on a walk with a good friend is good for your soul!

Listen to a Podcast or Audiobook – If you are no longer commuting to work every day, it can be difficult to find time to listen to your favorite podcasts or audio books. Treat your walks as a daily meeting and set a timer for 30-60 minutes. Then hit play on your phone and get transported into another world as you get your steps in.

Spot Changes in the Neighborhood – Did you notice that your neighbor painted their house? Did you see the new addition that is finally finished? Sometimes it’s hard to spot things that you drive by every day. But, when you are walking, you see everything! You may also run into a neighbor or two. One of the nicest benefits of walking around the neighborhood is taking time to talk with neighbors.

Take One Call/Day Outside – Whether it’s a conference call at work or speaking to a friend, don’t sit at your desk or on the couch talking to them. Put your walking shoes on and get the added benefit of Vitamin D by talking while walking around the block. You can even schedule outdoor calls each day and treat your walks as meetings.

Explore New Neighborhoods – How many neighborhoods are there to explore in our town? This summer, pick new neighborhoods to walk around and make mental notes of things that you see at other homes and want to incorporate into your own home. It might be a garden, the color of a front door, or a bay window. You can find the best of everything by walking in different neighborhoods.

Walk Through Town – You can see new stores up close, go window shopping, and say hi to local business owners and neighbors you see along the way. Try to walk downtown one day each week.

Town Of Babylon Boosts Boater

Safety

Town Announces Participation In Operation Dry Water And Renames Bay Constable Vessel For Brianna Lieneck

The Town of Babylon, alongside Bay Constables from the Public Safety Department and boater safety advocate Gina Lieneck, hosted an event at Tanner Park Marina to raise awareness about the importance of boater safety. A crucial part of this is preventing boating while impaired (BWI), the leading cause of injuries and tragic incidents on waterways. To combat this, the Town announced their participation in

Operation Dry Water from July 1-3 to remind the public of the importance of boating while sober and adhering to regulations to avoid devastating impacts.

“Operation Dry Water is a year-round national campaign centered on raising awareness and enforcement of boating under the influence,” said Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney. “It focuses on reducing the number

of incidents and fatalities related to drug or alcohol use on the water. Alcohol and drugs can turn a great day on the water into the tragedy of a lifetime.”

In addition to the announcement of Operation Dry Water, the Town of Babylon renamed one of the Bay Constable vessels in honor of Gina Lieneck’s daughter, Brianna, who was tragically killed in a boating incident involving an impaired driver. Since

her daughter’s passing, Gina has been a pivotal force in boating safety and helped pass Brianna’s Law in 2019, requiring all operators of motorized watercraft to complete a state-approved boating safety course. Gina was pleasantly surprised with the vessel renaming of The Breezy Brianna and thanked the Town of Babylon for their continued partnership in the fight for boater safety.

“The Breezy Brianna

will be out on the Great South Bay all summer long, making sure that boaters operate sober and safely,” said Councilman McSweeney. “The boat shall carry her name as a symbol, remembrance and testament to our commitment to safer boater practices in our community.”

“We need to start holding people accountable for their actions,” said Gina Lieneck. “If we give them a lesson, this can deter

them from getting on the boat and drinking or being under the influence of drugs. There is no reason why we should not have sensible laws in place, and there is no reason why people should get away with killing someone or injuring them.”

The Town of Babylon looks forward to promoting boater safety throughout the summer and participating in Operation Dry Water in the beginning of July.
