Lindenhurst Schools Superintendent Recognized Upon His Retirement

Lindenhurst Union Free School District, Mr. Giordano is set to retire at the end of June. His career in Lindenhurst began in 1997 when he was hired as an assistant principal at Lindenhurst High School. In 2002, he became the high school building principal and served in that role until 2014 when the Board of

Education unanimously appointed him superintendent of schools.

As superintendent, he has overseen the implementation of significant advancements in the district that have consciously improved services and advanced the rates of student success.

Many thank Sonora Smart Dodd for making Father’s Day happen. In 1909, while attending a Mother’s Day sermon in church, Dodd felt fathers were equally deserving of praise. To honor her own father, a Civil War veteran and widower who raised six children alone, Dodd petitioned for a Father’s Day on June 5th (the anniversary of

her father’s death) in her native Spokane, Wash. The celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Another account says Grace Golden Clayton came up with the idea for a Father’s Day in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia.

Clayton was inspired to celebrate fathers after 361 local men perished in a deadly mine explosion.

Clayton brought the idea

up to the minister of her local church.

Historians say that Father’s Day may even be a much older idea.

St. Joseph’s Day, which was celebrated each year on March 19 in Catholic nations of Europe since the medieval era, and

later elsewhere around the world, commemorates Joseph, the husband of Mary and father figure to Jesus. It was said that Joseph should be held up as the ideal example of fatherhood.

The Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates St. Joseph’s Day

on July 20. In the Orthodox Christian Church, the second Sunday before the Nativity is celebrated as the Sunday of the Forefathers — celebrating all of Jesus’ male ancestors, with an emphasis on Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish faith.

While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law.

2022 Long Island Hospitality Ball Continuing The Fight Against Cancer With The “Who’s Who” In Hospitality Join the LIHB in the fight against Breast Cancer for the 10th Anniversary Addition 2022 Long Island Hospitality Ball. For the 6th year we are benefitting the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY on Monday, June 27, 2022.

In the spirit of generosity, three industry peers will be honored in 2022 for their achievements. Greg Clement: VP, Commercial Operations New York State, Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits Keith Hart: President, Hart Agency /Chairman, Long Island Hospitality Ball, Ed Lowe Media Award: Carol SilvaEmmy Award Winning Broadcast Journalist, News 12.

This year the goal is to raise $500,000 for our recipient and partner in fighting cancer, CAROL M. BALDWIN BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FUND. THE LONG ISLAND HOSPITALITY BALL LIHB shows off its hospitality talents by

showcasing offerings from the region’s top restaurants, wine and spirit brands, nightclubs and entertainers as well as hotels and catering halls. The LIHB was founded in 2011 by Keith Hart and the LIHB Board of Directors.

Mr. Hart is a hospitality industry guru and cancer survivor.

His personal battle with cancer is now in remission and has inspired him to rally the industry to join the fight against cancer.

PSEG Long Island Is Prepared For Summer 2022 As the approaching 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy reminds us of the effects weather can have on the electric system, PSEG Long Island is announcing that it is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer.

The company’s ongoing electric infrastructure and storm hardening improvements help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year.

PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures.

“We are committed to providing reliable electric service every day, regardless of the conditions,” said Michael Sullivan, vice president of Electric Operations, PSEG Long Island. “The improvements we have made over the past eight years will help us deliver consistent, resilient power to our customers, today and in the future.”

Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as

by performing circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology.

PSEG Long Island’s infrastructure improvements for summer 2022 include: · New or upgraded transformers installed in Round Swamp, Navy Road, Ronkonkoma, Riverhead and Brightwaters substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand · 12 new distribution feeder lines installed in Ocean Beach, Far Rockaway, Round Swamp, Ronkonkoma, Brightwaters and Southampton areas to accommodate load growth · 4 kilovolt (kV) feeder converted to a 13.8 kV feeder line in Montauk area to provide additional feeder capacity · Overhead line replacement in Eastport to supply new load addition · New Round Swamp Road substation constructed with two new 69 kV transmission lines installed from Ruland Road and Plainview substations to serve new load additions in the area · Robert Moses to Captree 23 kV transmission cable replacement to improve reliability on Fire Island · MTA Beach 67th Street 33 kV transmission circuit relocation to support MTA station upgrades in Far Rockaway Storm Hardening Programs Completed

PSEG Long Island crews performing storm-hardening work on the distribution system.

Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 1,000 miles of distribution mainline circuits. From the first quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, the sections of circuits that are storm hardened saw a 44% reduction in damage leading to outages compared to the rest of the distribution system.

PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with

Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional more than 190 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment.

To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program

work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. Since 2014, PSEG Long Island removed more than 88,500 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed more than 21,000 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future

growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 14,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways.

PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summer-peak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities across New York City and Long Island.

Little Flower’s mission is to improve the well-being of those they serve, which they do through rigorous medical and mental health programs and services.

They believe that the devastating effects of trauma, poverty, racism, substance abuse, violence and lack of opportunity – particularly on children and families – can be healed with the proven use of effective therapy and support services. They provide care through a “What’s happened to you?” lens as opposed to “What is wrong with you?” lens.

Children who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, or have poor social skills, are verbally or physically aggressive, are on the autism spectrum, etc. are offered integrated interdisciplinary treatment in a therapeutic environment at the Residential Treatment Center (RTC) on their Wading River campus. An interdisciplinary treatment team of social workers, mental health staff, childcare staff, educators, medical professionals and a recreation therapist formulate individualized treatment plans that address the specific needs of each of those children. The underlying belief of the center is that a healthy community helps heal.

At the RTC, children reside in modern cottages designed to feel like home.

The cottages include individual rooms, common areas, a large dining room and a kitchen. Recreational programming there includes the Conway Recreation Center, athletic fields and courts and an outdoor swimming pool. The youth can also participate in off-campus recreation activities such as volunteer services and community involvement. The RTC also offers additional therapies and services, such as the Culinary Arts

program or music and art therapy.

Additionally, the youth also attend the Little Flower Union Free School District, a special act public school for students with special educational needs, which is also on their Wading River campus.

Additionally, Little Flower also offers a Mental Health and Medical Department that utilizes a traumainformed, multi-systemic approach to support to all foster children. Adhering to best practices, nurses coordinate and monitor medical care, including overseeing weekly well-child clinic, and provide screenings, child and caregiver education, assist pediatricians with routine physicals and provide body checks as needed. Children receive dental services and are referred to specialists when recommended.

In addition to the RTC, Little Flower also offers Community Family Treatment & Support Services (CFTSS) and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). Their organization’s service providers address various needs, such as daily living skills, coping skills, crisis prevention, socialization and employment needs, via telehealth, in the home, school and community.

The Long Island Museum Awarded Grant From Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has awarded grant funding to the Long Island Museum to support “In the Moment,” a free program which designed to creatively engage those living with dementia-related illnesses and their care partners.

“Art can be a powerful tool to enhance quality of life for individuals living with a dementia-related illness and their caregivers.

It stimulates the mind and creates opportunities for selfexpression and socialization,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president and chief executive officer. “We are

proud to support the Long Island Museum in delivering this impactful program to Long Islanders affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.”

“This AFA grant has allowed us to purchase a 75” Vibe Smartboard Pro to use as we return to inperson programming,” said Lisa Unander, Director of Education at the Long Island Museum. “We are building upon the lessons we learned through remote engagement and bringing the most successful aspects of these virtual programs to enhance our gallery sessions.

Specifically, we have seen

how powerful short video clips are as a way to engage and bring themes to life. With this grant, we won’t have to lose techniques we now heavily rely on, but instead will be able to incorporate these tools to create even more memorable multisensory moments together.”

The Long Island Museum is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages with an understanding and enjoyment of American art, history and carriages as expressed through the heritage of Long Island and its diverse communities.

Located in Stony Brook, they have numerous exhibitions,

concerts, film screenings, and educational programs for adults and children. The Long Island Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a Smithsonian Affiliate.

The $6,000 grant will support the Museum’s “In the Moment” program. Created in 2011, this innovative program takes individuals living with dementia and their care partners on guided tours of the museum’s collection of art, historical objects, and seasonal exhibits. Additionally, the program offers hands-on art workshops which afford opportunities for creative

expression, with all needed materials provided for free.

All programs are led by museum educators and designed to be engaging and cognitively stimulating.

Programming is currently offered virtually through Zoom and as a hybrid, inperson/virtual option. Since its inception, the program served more than 3,200 individuals, according to the Museum.

In April 2022, the Museum hosted its first hybrid In the Moment program with the Making Memories at the Movies event. Participants gathered in the museum’s event space to see clips

of films accompanied by facilitated discussions by licensed master social worker Marcy Rhodes, to help prompt memories and spark conversation. Participants also joined Zoom from home, assisted living and senior facilities to partake in this wonderful program.

AFA is able to provide vital services, like this grant, through the generosity of individual contributions, sponsorships and fundraising activities.
