External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates

for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

Winters Bros. Makes Donation To Lindenhurst Tree Project

Winter Bros. Waste Systems, of West Babylon, recently made an $8,500.00

donation to the Village of Lindenhurst for the planting of new trees along

South Wellwood Avenue, through the heart of the Lindenhurst Downtown Business District, from Gates Avenue to Hoffman Avenue.

Earlier this year, the Village began a project to improve pedestrian and traffic safety on Wellwood Avenue, including the installation of pedestrian crosswalks, sidewalk bulbouts and median extensions, repaving and curbing of the road, and restriping and reangling of parking spaces. As part of this “facelift”, the Village had to remove the trees that adorned our southern Downtown. Many of those trees, however, were in failing health, or of a variety with height and rootgrowth that threatened the integrity and safety of our sidewalks and utility wires. Therefore, in an effort to replant trees that would benefit the Village in

longevity -- ones that will not become too large and cause future damage, and ones that are not of an invasive species – the Village consulted with a number of horticultural experts, as well as the Long Island Invasive Special Management Area (LIISMA), and garnered input from valued members of the community, before choosing two varieties to plant in our Lindenhurst Downtown – the Kwanzan Cherry Tree & the Snow Goose Flowering Cherry Tree.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “The Village of Lindenhurst extends its grateful thanks to Winter Bros. Waste Systems for this very generous donation towards the beautification of our Downtown. We appreciate their partnership in our commitment to the planting, preserving, and caring of trees in our community.”

Lindenhurst Rotary Club Hosts Annual Pet Event

The Lindenhurst Rotary Club recently held their annual Pups on Parade & Blessing of the Animals event. It was a beautiful day to celebrate our pets! An array of dogs and their owners enjoyed marching around Village

Square Park, led by Rotary Club Co-Presidents June Cullinane and Trish LaFlare. Participants were also invited to bring a gift to be donated to a local animal shelter, and used to help homeless pets in need of attention and love.

Trustee Douglas Madlon said, “This wonderful, outdoor event was warm and loving, full of children, and short enough to get all the pets blessed before any serious barking broke out.

Apraxia Awareness Day

The Village Board recently acknowledged May 14th, 2024 as “Apraxia Awareness Day” in the Village of Lindenhurst. Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is an extremely challenging neurological speech disorder that affects

1-in-1,000 children. The disorder causes children to have significant difficulty learning to speak, and is among the most severe speech deficits in children.

CAS, and who seek to bring about greater awareness of the disorder.

Mayor Lavorata said, “Our highest respect goes to these children, as well as their families, for their effort, determination, and resilience in the face of such obstacles.”

The Lindenhurst Historical Society And The Village Of Lindenhurst Will Cohost The Unveiling Of The 1901 Restored Long Island Rail Road Depot And Freight House Museum’s William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historic Transportation Marker

The Lindenhurst Historical Society is proud to announce that it is the recipient of a William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historic Transportation Marker grant. The grant funds were utilized to procure a Pomeroy Marker bearing an inscription that indicates the historic significance of the 1901 Restored LIRR Depot and Freight House and the role both the Depot and the Rail Road played in the 1870 founding of the City of Breslau.

The Historic Transportation Marker will be unveiled in a joint ceremony held by the Lindenhurst Historical

Society and the Inc. Village of Lindenhurst on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at the 1901 Restored Depot and Freight House located at Irmisch Park at the intersection of South Broadway and South Third Street beginning at 1PM. Included among the speakers helping to unveil the marker are Lindenhurst Village Mayor Mike Lavorata, Lindenhurst Village Trustees Doug Madlon and Maryann Weckerle, Lindenhurst Village Historian Anna Jaeger and Town of Babylon Historian Mary Cascone. Credited as Long Island’s first railroad museum, the

Depot and Freight House replicates the Lindenhurst stop on the LIRR, recalling its original location along East Hoffman Avenue, close to the grade crossing at No. Wellwood Ave.

Depot Museum Site Manager Ed “Skip” Meinhold will help host the ceremony. “We are excited to kick off the Depot’s 50th Anniversary Year with the Marker’s unveiling,” said Mr. Meinhold. “Our museum staff is looking forward to an exciting summer season at the Depot and hope to culminate our 50th Anniversary year in an even larger celebration this October.” The 1901

Depot and Freight House Museum are opened to the public from June thru October on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. Admission is free.

The Lindenhurst Historical Society has enjoyed a valuable and mutually advantageous partnership with the Inc. Village of Lindenhurst. United in a shared vision to preserve, the partnership has produced three instances whereby buildings relevant to Breslau’s/ Lindenhurst’s founding and subsequent development as the 4th largest village in New York State were protected

from demolition and preserved as museums.

The Lindenhurst Historical Society is proud to manage all three buildings as museums; The Lindenhurst Historical House Museum (reopening Fall 2024) at 272 South Wellwood Avenue and at Irmisch Park, the 1901 Restored Long Island Railroad Depot and Freight House Museum and the Old Village Hall Museum(reopening Summer 2024).

“All our museum buildings are all historically valuable in their own right,” said Village Historian Anna Jaeger, “but also provide intrinsic

and germane exhibit space along with valuable storage for the Society’s collection of local artifacts, objects and historical items.”

As we approach the midpoint of 2024, it’s a great time to conduct a review of your business goals. This process allows you to reflect on your achievements, identify areas for improvement, and realign your strategies to give you the best chance for a strong finish to the year. Here’s a five-step checklist to guide you through a midyear review:

1. Financial Check Up

• Review Income

Statements and Balance

Sheets: Compare your actual revenue and expenses against your

projections. Were you on target or are there big differences between what you thought would happen at the beginning of the year and what happened? If there are significant differences, understand the reasons behind them.

• Cash Flow Analysis: Make sure you have enough cash flow to cover your expenses for the rest of the year. Look at money coming in vs. money going out and make any adjustments to avoid having negative cash flow.

• Budget Review: Adjust your budget based

on the first half’s results. What worked and what didn’t work in your business? Don’t be afraid to cut back in areas that are underperforming.

2. Measure Your Work

• Sales: What were your topselling products or services through June? Were there any surprises—good or bad? Now is the time to make changes to your plans for the second half to give you the best shot at hitting your numbers at the end of the year.

• Customer Feedback: What are your customers saying about you, and your business? Are they

happy? What changes do they want to see in your business? What do they say about your competitors? The more you know about your customers, the better you can service their needs.

• Employee Performance: How did your employees do for the first six months of 2024? Any surprises there? What do they need to succeed in the second half of the year? Do you need to address any complaints or make changes?

3. Run Your Business

• Review Your Work: How can you run your

business more efficiently and productively? Are there areas that eat up money? Review your work week and ask this question, “How can I do this more efficiently?”

• Tech Review: Are there areas of your business that could use a technology upgrade? Have you looked at the different ways AI (artificial intelligence) can make your business more productive? Today, tools like ChatGPT can reduce the time you spend on marketing and operations by 80-90%.

• Inventory Management: Review your inventory. Make sure you have the right amount of stock to meet demand without overstocking, which ties

LHS Symphony Orchestra Gets The Gold At NYSSMA Festival

Lindenhurst High School’s symphony orchestra, under the direction of Kristin Lombardo, recently earned the Gold with Distinction rating at the 2024 NYSSMA Majors

Festival at West Islip High School. Gold with Distinction is the highest rating the organization bestows on performances by student-musicians.

The NYSSMA Majors Festival differs from others

throughout the year by specifically providing a venue for larger ensembles to perform before panels of NYSSMA adjudicators. This is the first time Lindenhurst’s symphony orchestra has

performed at this festival in seven years.

The Lindenhurst student-musicians performed three pieces for two NYSSMA adjudicators. The adjudicators evaluated the orchestra

and provided comments on the pieces.

“Congratulations to our very talented symphony orchestra and their dedicated instructor, Ms. Lombardo,” said Robert Lombardo, Director of

Fine and Performing Arts at the Lindenhurst School District. “This is a major accomplishment for these student-musicians, and one I hope they will remember throughout their musical careers.”
