FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips During Lockdown As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed.

“The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below.

Birds do not want to slide around, so a material that is coated and slippery, like glazed ceramic or glass, may not be too popular. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing.

Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds.

Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris.

Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests.

Robert was born on June 3, 1934 in Lindenhurst, New York, to the late Robert Beggs Graham and the late Frances Uge Graham.

Robert was a Christian and was a member of the Clayton Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army and played basketball for the Army Basketball Team that toured Italy playing against local and national teams. He was a graduate of Mercer University and inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988. He enjoyed athletics, and in his professional life he worked as a teacher and coach for thirty-seven years; ten years at Putnam County High School in Eatonton, thirteen years at Gatewood School in Eatonton, and fourteen years at Elbert County High School in Elberton. He was chosen to receive the “STAR Teacher” award, achieved one state championship for his basketball team and one second place finish, won fourteen region titles and five “Coach of the Year” awards. He coached softball with six sub-region titles and two region titles. Coach Graham also had the privilege of coaching an exceptional group of young ladies in track, and together they won four consecutive state championships, and the fifth year placed second in state. He was awarded “Coach of the Year’ for those five seasons in track.

He retired in 1998 and relocated to live in the beautiful mountains of Rabun County, Georgia.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, nonprofits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is well-rounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need.

Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, however her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity.

During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for.

Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!”

Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR STARTS EACH DAY WITH A STORY - After she learned school was not returning for the remainder of the year, Deauville Gardens East school counselor Lysa Mullady, who is also a children’s book author, was looking for a way to keep in touch with the students. “The only thing I could think of was to read stories on the computer,” Ms. Mullady said. “I brought a wagon to school and brought home all my picture books.” Ms. Mullady learned about Google Classroom and Screencastify and on the first day of instruction, she recorded a story and posted it to every classroom at Deauville Gardens East. She has read a new story to the students every single morning since that day. “At first, I felt a bit silly, reading to a computer,” she said. “Then I heard from families who said how much the stories meant to them.
