Officials from the Village of Lindenhurst, Town of Babylon, and Suffolk County recently participated in the official ribbon cutting of Hunter and Thief, a beautiful, new, modern cocktail bar located at 21 West Hoffman Avenue, in the heart of the Lindenhurst Downtown Business District.

Jonathan and Gabrielle Gonzalez are now set to open their doors after nearly four years of pandemic-related setbacks. Along the way, they received an $18,750 PSEG Long Island Main Street Revitalization Grant to help them financially to open their business.

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF also awards selected Music Educators with their ‘Educator of Note’ award annually, allowing those who go above and beyond for their students to be honored with a grant that can be used within the school or district that they work(ed) in.

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day

Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 nowfreed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen

soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgia-based Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-inchief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the

holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be. • Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History. com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s. Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

BACCA Awarded $50,000 By The New York State Council On The Arts For A New Theatrical Lighting System

Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, Inc. announced a grant award totaling $50,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to support the organization’s addition of a new theatrical lighting system at the multi-use BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst, NY. This grant is part of a record capital project funding announcement by NYSCA, which totals over

$42 million to 144 capital projects across New York State.

BACCA’s Arts Center hosts and provides support for musical performances, productions by community theatre groups, art exhibitions, and other events, and is located at 149 N. Wellwood Ave. in the Village of Lindenhurst. BACCA will celebrate its 50th year of service to community in 2024.

“Strengthening our creative sector increases tourism, boosts our economy, and enhances the rich heritage and cultural life of New York State,” Governor Hochul said. “These record grants will support a wide range of diverse and innovative projects at our arts and cultural organizations across the state, helping ensure all who visit will continue to have wonderful experiences for years to come.”

PSEG Foundation To Grant $1 Million To Local Organizations

The PSEG Foundation announced the 2023 request for proposals for the annual Neighborhood Partners Program, with grants available ranging from $500 to $15,000. Eligible 501(c) (3) organizations in New Jersey and Long Island, New York are encouraged to apply. Applications will be evaluated and grants awarded based on demonstrated program effectiveness, depth, breadth and overall alignment with the PSEG Foundation strategic pillars, which are environmental sustainability, social justice and equity and economic empowerment.

“We’re pleased to make $1 million in grant funding available

through our very popular Neighborhood Partners Program, where we see local heroes making a difference in the lives of others throughout PSEG’s service territories,” said Calvin Ledford Jr., PSEG Foundation president. “We seek to partner with people who have a track record of success and who present viable plans for addressing today’s largest challenges including those of sustainability, equity, social justice and economic empowerment.”

Last year the PSEG Foundation awarded more than 300 Neighborhood Partners Program grants. For example, America’s Grow-a-Row received funding for its fresh produce initiative.

This program provides nutritious produce to regional hunger relief agencies and at local free farmers markets in communities that lack reliable access to affordable fresh produce. In Long Island, Habitat for Humanity used its grant for the Reuse, Reduce, Repurpose Program to help divert more than 3 million pounds of waste from local landfills that were repurposed and sold at a fraction of the cost to benefit its clients, families and the local community.

“PSEG is the perfect example of corporate social responsibility in action. Their commitment to feeding those faced with hunger and food insecurity runs deep throughout their organization.

From the countless hours PSEG employees have invested by volunteering in the fields, to helping underwrite a portion of our farming expenses,” said Chip Paillex, president and founder, America’s Grow-a-Row. “We could not be more grateful for PSEG and the PSEG Foundation’s support that allowed us to positively impact approximately 100,000 people in need last year.”

L.A.L.L. Outgoing President Honored On Opening Day

The sun was not shining down on the Lindenhurst American Little League (LALL) Opening Day ceremonies, but the smiles were on the children’s faces, making Opening Day a joyous community event. Marking the official start of

Lindenhurst Fire Department 2023 Installation Dinner

The Lindenhurst Fire Department recently held their 184th Installation of Officers and Recognition Dinner. Congratulations to our newly-elected Lindenhurst Fire Department Officers, Chief of the Department David Collins, First Assistant Chief Robert Santos, Second Assistant Chief Jonathan Cutolo, Third Assistant Chief David Brink, Secretary Charles Vozzo, and Treasurer Sarah-Marie Callahan.

Mayor Lavorata thanked

outgoing Chief Michael DeGregorio for his many years of hard work and selfless dedication to the Lindenhurst Community as Chief of the Department, and congratulated David Collins for his installation as the new Chief.

Mayor Lavorata said, “Chief Michael DeGregorio and Chief David Collins have both shown great leadership over the past few years, always willing to help train and share their knowledge with others.

Both Chiefs helped guide the Lindenhurst Fire Department through the pandemic, keeping all responders safe while continuing to respond to calls.”
