Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block.

We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket.

These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line.

Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer.

Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.

Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing.

Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written.

In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on

writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me.

Too much pressure. No thanks!

I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts.

Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird.

I talk to myself - it’s how I write.

And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA)

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child.

This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.

BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements.

Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.

Their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month (unless it’s a Holiday) at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00 a.m.

On Saturday, May 18, Lindenhurst Memorial Library is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its building.

Lindenhurst Memorial Library had a grand opening celebration back on May 18, 1969, and they will be celebrating on the same day, 50 years later.

There are special historical displays from the May 18, 1969 grand o p e n i n g celebration in their lobby showcase, as well as a display detailing the fabrication of the Windows on Wellwood memorial to Lindenhurst’s veterans, that is showcased inside the library.

On May 18th, festivities will run all day with the following special events that the Lindenhurst community is invited to participate in: Tie-Dye T-Shirts sponsored by the Friends of the Lindenhurst Memorial Library, come ready to get your hands messy as you tie-dye a t-shirt to keep.

You can also choose to bring a shirt you already own to tie-dye, from 9:00 am – 11:00 am in the backyard. No registration.

Little Free Libraries: Little Free Libraries began ten years ago as a way for neighborhoods and communities to book share. After a conversation with Senior Center Director Barbara Polodino, the Library placed its first Little Free Library (LFL) in front of the Rainbow Center for the local neighborhood to enjoy. The concept is simple: people can take a book to read from the LFL, and they can also donate books to the LFL for others to discover and explore. The Library also worked with the Town of Babylon to place a special version of a LFL at the Respite Care Park, located at 200 East S u n r i s e Highway in Lindenhurst.

The first kind of park in the nation, the Respite Park was created for caregivers and those dealing with Alzheimers and its effects. The LFL in the Respite Park is located near the pond and Gazebo, and was originally stocked with materials about Alzheimer’s disease and self-care materials for caregivers.

Currently, through a wonderful partnership with the library’s Friends group, the Library was able to place an additional four Little Free Libraries throughout Lindenhurst.

Good Books and Good Deeds When the members of the Harding Avenue Elmentary School Book Café, led by teacher Jeanette Walsh, read “The Lemonade War”

by Jacqueline Davies they decided that they would have to conduct their own lemonade wars to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The students created posters and led the drive in the school that resulted in $483 in

donations.

Additionally, the fourth and fifth grade Book Café members created their own teams and lemonade stands and met at the Lindenhurst gazebo on a Sunday to sell their lemonade, bracelets and desserts for the cause.

All of their efforts paid off and the lemonade wars were a tremendous success as an additional $700 was raised for the cause. The members of the Book Café

presented the donations to the Lindenhurst Union Free School District director of health, physical education and athletics, Anthony Amesti, who has taken part in four Muckfest Philadelphia obstacle runs sponsored by The National Multiple Sclerosis Society and will compete in his fifth on June 8. Mr. Amesti runs in support of his sisterin-law who has multiple sclerosis.

Rainbow Center Celebrates 45th Anniversary Mayor Michael Lavorata was recently on hand to be part of the Rainbow Senior Center’s 45th Anniversary Celebration.

The Rainbow Center held an open house for the community’s seniors to learn about the Rainbow Center. The celebration included a luncheon, a presentation from Village

Historian Anna Jaeger on the history of the Rainbow Center, follow by coffee and cake. Mayor Lavorata said, “It is a privilege to be celebrating 45 wonderful of our Rainbow Senior Citizen Center and its service to our community.

Seventh grade students in Sean Mcgevna’s art class at the Lindenhurst Middle School recently enjoyed a visit from portrait artist Gary Long. Long is a retired art teacher from NYC, who currently teaches and exhibits as a full-time professional artist on the east end.

During his visit he

explored with students the mindfulness of portraiture and the ability to render a human face with a true “likeness.”

Long shared with students the “four valueable conceptual aids using the sight-size method of drawing/painting” which establish the foundation for accurate drawing. He
