The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19.

This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak.

To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. The toughest part for pet lovers is that you must remember that you really should not be petting, snuggling, or sharing kisses or food with your pet!

The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time.

We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes.

Telehealth Is Available Through Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy Telehealth is a new resource available through Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy for anyone that needs therapy and wishes to receive the treatment in the comfort and safety of their own home. Telehealth offers a web based therapy session that is done via a webcam. Phones, tablets, or computers can be used.

The sessions are private and the only people that have access to the video call are the patient and the treating therapist.

Telehealth is available for any body part or condition, and is covered by insurance. While we navigate the challenges COVID-19 presents, under most insurances Metro Physical Therapy is able to waive any copayment associated with the treatment. This means sessions are available at no out of pocket cost to the patient in most cases. In the event a copayment can not be waived, a second session in the same week is being

- Discuss the situation openly. Avoiding the topic or providing blanket responses may fuel anxiety.

- Don’t give more information then is requested.

Check to make sure your children understand your response by asking them to repeat back what they have heard and let them know you are open to more questions.

- Help your school-aged child and adolescents set boundaries on their information flow in the same way you are setting your own boundaries.

Help them identify factual sources of information and set appropriate intervals to

check-in.

- Keep as many routines intact as possible. For children who are out of school, it is important to maintain other familiar routines such as mealtimes and bedtimes.

- Use technology to keep children in touch with a friend or older family members. This allows them to maintain connections while adhering to calls to stay at home to helpprevent the spread of coronavirus.

- Encourage physical activity and time outside, where possible. Staying active and having opportunities to be outdoors safely are helpful in mitigating anxiety and

building resilience.

- Use this situation as an opportunity to teach distress tolerance skills that will be helpful to your kids in any situation.

For those who wish to speak to a mental health professional, CHS offers a host of services including telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for Emergency Department (ED) patients, particularly after normal office hours.

Although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, cremation should take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason cremation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass.

Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains.” The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains”, as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body.

An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be a proper final disposition for those remains.

Convalescent serum therapy is a century-old treatment that has been used in patients during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, the diphtheria epidemic in the U.S. in the 1920s, and more recently, the Ebola outbreak in 2014.

“Transferring this antibody-rich plasma into someone who is still fighting the disease may give that person the

immune power to recover from the disease. This is especially important in the first several weeks of infection before one can develop high enough antibody levels to fight the virus.”

“Everyone at Stony Brook is laser focused on identifying every pathway possible to help change the course of this devastating virus,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences and Dean, Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. “Having a network of physicianscientists in place allows us to contribute on both

a local and global scale to accelerate the fight against COVID-19 and save lives.”

Stony Brook Medicine is collaborating with Chembio Diagnostic Systems, a public company based on Long Island. Javan Esfandiari, Executive Vice President and Chief Science & Technology Officer who says Chembio is pleased that its unique and proprietary Dual Path Platform, referred to as DPP®, to separately and simultaneously detect and measure IgM and IgG antibodies, specifically to COVID-19, was the assay of choice for Stony Brook.

“Our unique patented

technology uses one of our two analyzers (the MR1 and MR2) produced

by Chembio, to read the test results for both IgM and IgG from finger stick blood in 15 minutes and give a numerical result related to the amount of antibody in the sample,” said Esfandiari. “This takes away the individual subjectivity of results and increases the sensitivity and specificity of the test.

Chembio has now received authorization to market and sell the DPP COVID-19 IgM and IgG assay system in the US through the FDA notification process.”
