When I started my business in 2021, I read as many articles as I could about finances and cash flow. I heard dozens of horror stories about people who went out of business because they ran out of money; I didn’t want to join them on the failed business line.

I wrote down some great tips about finances and cash flow that helped me deal with all the uncertainty over the past few years. Here are a few tips that almost any business owner can use today:

Keep Two Eyes on Your Receivables. Thankfully I don’t have to extend credit to my clients; my business is transactional. When the sale is done, I get my check. If you have customers on credit, avoid having a “net 30” client become a “net 60” client, or worse. When times get tough, payments will slow down. Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together.

The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.

In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.

Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.

“I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and

smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)

2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.

3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. Keep Two More Eyes on Your Payables and Purchases. All business owners should know exactly how much money needs to go out every month between fixed and variable expenses.

If cashflow is starting to get tight, avoid making unnecessary purchases, especially ones that can wait a few months. Besides, it’s possible that the cost of whatever you plan to buy will come down in a few months as more and more people slow their spending. Remember, in tough times, cash is king.

Take the 30-Day Test

one should do today! If something happened in your business, good or bad, how much money could you raise immediately or in the next 30 days? If your delivery van needed a new engine, your commercial freezer broke, or if you landed a huge account and needed to hire people and buy more inventory, could you do it? These are great

questions to ask BEFORE they happen.

Admittedly, when I started my company, managing my financials wasn’t something I enjoyed doing. So, I hired a bookkeeper and an Accountant (now my Accountant also does my bookkeeping). It means having an extra set of ears and eyes watching over my

business and making sure I avoid as many financial nightmares as possible. It also allows me to build on my financial security and take advantage of opportunities in a down market.

Debut Theater Company Presents Moonrise At BACCA Arts Center

Debut Theater Company is opening its new play, Moonrise, on April 14 at BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst at 149 North Wellwood Avenue. The play will run April 14, 15, 21, 22 at 8:00 pm, and April 15 and 23 at 2:00 pm.

In this original drama by Anthony DiFranco, a close family onceremoved from Ellis Island gets a shock when a beauty in a red dress shows up uninvited at a family funeral, with a story that pulls their idea of themselves inside out. In the upheaval that follows, they all have to work hard to find reconciliation, hope, and love.

The cast includes John Torres, James Rappa, JoAnn Celentano, Alexandra Thomas, Michele Brisco, and James Brautigam. Direction is by Deborah Rupy.

Councilman McSweeney Partners With The American Red Cross To Save Lives

When Councilman Terrence McSweeney first took office in 2018, his motivation was not politics, his motivation was leaving this town a better place than how he found it. McSweeney said, “As a New York City Firefighter for 19 years and Volunteer Firefighter for 23 years, public service runs in my blood.”

Fast forward to today, McSweeney is all things public safety. Last year he partnered with the American Red Cross to

offer free of charge to every home, sufficient coverage of smoke detectors for the entire home. The program was successful but not as much as he would have liked. This year, with what seems to be Covid-19 deep in the rearview mirror he said the program has been much more successful, keeping the American Red Cross busy and both partners in this program couldn’t be happier. “Day in and day out, it is the Town board’s mission to keep our residents safe. Smoke

detectors save lives by providing an early warning sign that something is wrong. According to the national fire protection Association, 50% of all fires occur when people are sleeping.” McSweeney added if you are looking to have smoke detectors installed free of charge call his office at 631-957-3081. FIRST RESPONDER FRIDAY - On Friday, March 3rd Councilman McSweeney, the SCPD 1st Pct., and the Lindenhurst Fire Dept. EMS visited Mrs. Megan Maronski & Mrs. Jean Christiansen’s 6th-grade class at the Lindenhurst Middle School. Councilman McSweeney thanked the classes for participating in P.S. I Love You Day and writing letters to our 1st Responders. He then spoke about his role as a 1st responder as a firefighter with the FDNY. The Suffolk County Police Dept. spoke to them about the roles and responsibilities of our police officer and the Lindenhurst Fire Dept. spoke about the roles and responsibilities of an EMT/Paramedics. McSweeney added, “Look at the people here today. We call 911 when we have no one else to turn to for help, or we don’t know how to handle the situation ourselves. What would the world look like without our 1st responders?” The class was very intrigued and had many great questions about the roles of each responder.
