When Life Gives You Lemons Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost so easily. ~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly
impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

Going for the Gold The 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea have not only inspired patriotism among students in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District but also scientific curiosity. Fourth-grade students of West Gates Avenue Elementary School and thirdgrade students of William Rall Elementary School recently took part in STEM activities designed to reflect the Olympic theme. In small teams, using materials such as
aluminum foil, pipe cleaners, and washers students created plans and constructed bobsleds, curling rocks and ski jumpers. Using the scientific method, the students tested their equipment, made modifications and retested until they were confident their creation would take the gold in a class competition. The fifth-grade students of Valerie Dietrich and Jen Cavallaro’s class at William Rall Elementary School got creative in a different
way. Those students used their researching skills to create group Google Slide presentations in which they explored their favorite Olympic events in greater depth following a set criteria. Presentations, which included music, video clips and photographs, were researched, designed and presented by each group to their fellow classmates in front of a “panel of judges” (the classroom teachers).

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Black History Celebration Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School recognized Black History Month with a celebration on February 28th that showcased the many talents of the student body. Performances featured the dance and step team as well as musical selections by the Madrigal Choir and jazz band. The celebration, themed “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” was hosted by Walter G.
O’Connell Copiague High School students Kyree Scott and Tiare Gordon. The Madrigal Choir presented three musical selections, including “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The dance ensemble’s performance was followed by the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and the Copiague Middle School step teams. The Drama Club presented powerful and inspiration quotes from famous
African-Americans past and present. For the final performance of the show, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School senior Osazuwa Eghafona played the bass guitar while his brother joined him on stage on the trumpet for a musical selection.
