Award For Acting Role

Albany Avenue music teacher Tyler Smalling from the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently won an award for Best Supporting Actor in a Play presented by BroadwayWorld’s Regional

Awards for his role in a black box production, “The Scarecrow and Mrs. Gale,” which he participated in at a Lindenhurst theater called South Shore Theatre Experience.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Located at 286 Middle Island Rd in Medford, the Long Island Chapter works to raise awareness, recruit new puppy raisers and volunteers and support one another’s work on behalf of the Canine Companions’ mission. This Chapter is a lively network filled with opportunities for social engagement from puppy classes to fundraisers. Beyond the satisfaction of doing good work for Canine Companions, lifelong friendships are often formed among chapter members.

The benefits of having a service dog can be indescribable, often life-changing. Canine Companions provides dogs for an array of disabilities; they o er service dogs for adults, children and veterans with a physical or auditory disability or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education settings. The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year.

In recent years, Yucca, a Facility Dog, became a new furry member of the Phillips Avenue Elementary School in Riverhead, NY (placed by Canine Companions). She helps students learn responsibility, come out of their shell and even helps those that experience issues at home, such as past traumas or emotional/social issues.

“Having a dog there to just talk to or pet can really help the children,” explained teacher Emilee Raynor. “Yucca loves our

students and they know she is not judging them, so they take more risks when working with her than with their peers.”

Yucca is incorporated into daily lessons, such as language practice, when students read to her and describe the commands Yucca is following. “I have already seen the huge impact that Facility Dog Yucca has made in the classroom. Students are so excited to come to class. They work hard for Yucca and understand their responsibilities.”

Yucca’s impact is among countless success stories. If you are looking to make a di erence, you can become a Puppy Raiser with the Long Island Chapter today. Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love.

Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

Early-Stage Engagement Event Takes Place March 15

The Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will be holding an inperson event called “Memory Cafe” as apart of the Early-Stage Social Engagement Program on Wednesday, Mar. 15 from 2-3 p.m at The Arbors at Islandia East.

The Early-Stage Social Engagement Program offers a fun and comfortable way for people living in the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia to get out, get active and get connected with one another through a variety of social events and community-based activities.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, announced that it will holding an art show and auction on Thursday, May 4th, 2023 from 5:30 PM–8:30 PM at its facilities located at 829 Old Nichols Rd, Islandia, NY 11749. The Stable Spirits Art Show and Auction Fundraiser will feature the artwork of local artists of all ages and art mediums and styles. In addition to the art show and auction, the event will include a selection of

wines from local vineyards paired with small bites by Sommelier Jun Xi Chen, assisted by restaurant professionals and fellow Culinary Institute of America graduate, Megan Henne. Event ticket prices are $60.

“We are very excited to give local artists an opportunity to show their work, while also helping Pal-O-Mine raise funds for our new 2,000 square foot educational center, which will expand our onsite therapy and vocational services,” said Pal-O-Mine founder and CEO Lisa Gatti. Under the guidance of Splashes of Hope artists, attendees will also participate in an interactive mural process creating art

to hang in the new center. For artists interested in participating, they can submit three to five pieces by completing a submission form and emailing images of their artwork. The deadline for all submissions is March 15, 2023. Artists will be notified of acceptance by email on March 17th, 2023. Artists must agree to donate 20% of each sale made at the event to Pal-OMine and donate one piece of art to Pal-O-Mine for use in future fundraisers.

Accepted artists will drop off their work at PalO-Mine on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023 between 9 AM and 5 PM. Each artist will have space in one of PalO-Mine’s barn stalls to

display their art. Tables and professional lighting will be provided for artists’ use during the event. Artists must bring any additional display materials they

Third Annual Restaurant Crawl

61st Long Island Artists Exhibition

Opens March 4th At The Art League Of Long Island

The Art League of Long Island’s 61st Long Island Artists Exhibition, a biennial event, features 2-D and 3-D works created by artists from Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens. The exhibit will be on view in the Art League’s spacious Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery through April 7. The reception takes place Saturday, March 11, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. A Gallery Talk with the exhibition juror, Neill Slaughter, takes place on Thursday, March 30, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. The gallery, reception, and gallery talk are open to the public, and admission is free.

Exhibition juror Neill Slaughter, has selected 61 works out of the 675 submissions entered by 208 artists. The works selected for display in the gallery encompass a variety of artistic mediums and styles of art created by established and emerging artists.

THIRD ANNUAL RESTAURANT CRAWL - The OLPH Knights of Columbus and the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce held their Third Annual Restaurant Crawl in downtown Lindenhurst. Thanks to all the restaurants, coffee, espresso bars, and breweries that took part. South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one

of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the reason for applying for the

scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript of grades, and at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one.

About the Juror: Artist Neill Slaughter graduated with a BFA degree in 1975 from the University of Georgia and received his

MFA in 1978 from Indiana University in Bloomington. From 1978 until his retirement four decades later, Professor Slaughter taught fine arts courses and art history at the university level (both in the US and England) as well as exhibiting his drawings and paintings nationally and internationally. In 1993 Professor Slaughter moved to Southampton NY from Los Angeles to begin teaching for Long Island University where he was chairperson of the Art Department twice during his quarter century tenure with LIU. Slaughter, now Professor Emeritus, resides in Southampton NY. During his forty years of teaching, Professor Slaughter spent a considerable amount of time traveling throughout the world to teach, conduct research and paint. His extensive travels have influenced what he paints, which often reflect the social conditions of his surroundings. Among his awards and honors, Professor Slaughter has received a Ford Foundation Fellowship in 1977-78,

a Scottish Arts Council Grant in 1980, an LMU Research Grant to Africa in 1988 and a Fulbright Fellowship to India in 1992. In 2003 Professor Slaughter was the awarded the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching granted by Long Island University. In 2008 he mounted a thirty-year retrospective, which included a full color catalog funded by Long Island University. In 2017 he was granted Professor Emeritus status by Long Island University. He has presented live art history lectures since his retirement including “A Triumphant Triad” at the Parrish Art Museum in August 2022 comparing and contrasting three great Gilded Age artists, Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn. Neill Slaughter has had more than thirty solo exhibits and participated in more than ninety national and international group exhibitions. His artwork is in numerous public and private collections throughout the world.
