Bethpage Federal Credit Union will help low-to-moderate income households prepare their tax returns by offering its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax filing services online for the first time. Now, in its 18th year, the program is open to all eligible Long Islanders, including non-Bethpage members.

Now through Thursday, April 8, 2021, trained and bilingual tax preparers will be available to assist eligible taxpayers with 2020 incomes of $57,000 and below, via pre-scheduled Zoom appointments. To schedule your appointment, visit lovebethpage.com/vita.

Additionally, Bethpage Federal Credit Union has partnered with New York State to provide free virtual workshops where taxpayers can utilize online software to file their own taxes. “It was very important to us that qualifying taxpayers be able to access free tax filing services during the pandemic,” said Rob Suarez, Assistant Vice President, Bethpage. “Since that decision was made, we worked to develop a virtual VITA program for our tax preparers to work directly with tax payers to seamlessly handle the filings. We’ve also been working closely with the IRS to head up an education program to help other organizations across Long Island go online as well. While most continue to struggle with COVID concerns, safety is our number one priority.”

Bethpage has secured over 50 trained volunteers from Adelphi University, Long Island University, Molloy College, and

New York Institute of Technology, who will work one-on-one virtually with tax payers to prepare the returns.

Bethpage VITA volunteers will also educate eligible working families about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) while preparing tax returns. The EITC is an anti-poverty program available to four out of five eligible Long Island households. VITA volunteers will work with taxpayers to ensure that eligible families are aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which could bring up to $6,557 into the hands of deserving Long Island families. Credit amounts are based on income levels, filing status and other factors. Eligible households can claim up to three years back of Earned Income Tax Credits.

Bethpage has also partnered with The Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, which is an umbrella human services organization consisting of over 100 member organizations.

HWCLI has teamed up with getyourrefund.org to help people file their taxes online with the help of HWCLI Staff and IRScertified volunteers from across Long Island. This year, taxpayers will be able to access their tax services from the comfort and safety of their own home by visiting https://hwcli.com/ vita, or reaching out by email or phone at taxhelp@ hwcli.com or 517/7380447.

In 2020, Bethpage completed 1,341 VITA tax returns and helped secure IRS total refunds of over $1,700,000. Bethpage also helped secure $163,419 in child tax credits in 202O, and $425,256 in Earned Income Tax Credits.

Since the program’s inception in 2004, over

24,266 individuals have filed their tax returns through Bethpage, resulting in $26,552,294 million returned to the Long Island community.

Qualifying taxpayers planning to take advantage of Bethpage’s VITA program must bring the following materials with them for review: photo identification, social security cards for you, your spouse, and dependents, current year’s tax package if you received one, wage and earnings statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R from all employers, interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099), a copy of last year’s Federal and State returns if available, bank routing and account numbers for tax refund direct deposit, total paid for daycare, and provider’s tax ID. Tips for Enjoying a Drive-In Movie Experience

(StatePoint) Social distancing guidelines across the country have made visiting a conventional movie theater difficult, if not impossible.

However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drivein movie theater.

The drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself.

While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space.

Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same.

“A drive-in movie is the ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions,” says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager

for MINI USA. To shed light on this rediscovered institution of cinema, MINI USA created a guide for drivers to help them make the most of the experience. Here are five of their top tips: 1. Arrive early. Many theaters allow guests to arrive up to an hour before the show begins.

Take advantage of this time to pick the best parking spot and stretch your legs. If the snack bar is open, grab a treat!

Attendees may also consider curbside pick-up from Five Guys, Panera, or Olive Garden, all conveniently located on the grounds of the Mall, before filing into the lot for the movie.

Throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District, students and staff took part in Kindness Week. They challenged themselves to participate in various acts of kindness such as saying hello to three people, paying someone a complement or writing a thank-you note to someone in the school.

At Alleghany Avenue Elementary School, where the theme was Spreading Kindness Alleghany and

Beyond, students took part in classroom lessons from the Beyond Our Neighbors curriculum supporting empathy and compassion for others.

Lessons revolved around virtual read-a-louds including one from school social worker, Florri Krefsky, who read “The Forgiveness Garden”

by Lauren Thompson.

Students put together a large banner to thank the school’s custodians for their hard work in keeping the school clean and safe.

Stanislav Kravechenko and Antonio TejadaToribio, from Christine Sanfratello’s science research class, have been selected to receive a $300 research grant from the New York Institute of Technology for their proposal: “Determining the Effects of Hypoglycemia in Diabetic Patients

Using the Model Organism C. elegans.”

According to the submitted proposal, “The significance of this investigation would be to develop a greater understanding of the effects of hyperglycemia on the quality of life of diabetic patients. It will impact the future of diabetes research and help to educate diabetic patients as to the importance for them to monitor their glucose intake and ensure a healthy life.”

The Dangers Of Dented Cans

Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers.

They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet.

In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream.

Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population.

The Twilight Wish Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have fulltime jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive,

emotional and physical ability to experience the wish.

Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

This organization has continued to do their good work throughout this pandemic. Today they are still helping others and when going to grant a wish, they are taking all the necessary safety precautions. Safety is a top prioity at The Twilight Wish Foundation.

Lidl Offers $200 In Extra Pay To Encourage Employees To Get Covid-19 Vaccine As states make COVID-19 vaccines more widely available, Lidl US recently announced a new initiative to encourage its employees to get the vaccine. Lidl is providing $200 in extra pay to all Lidl US employees who choose to receive the vaccine. The additional

payment will help offset the costs associated with vaccine administration, including travel costs and childcare. The company will also accommodate employee schedules for vaccine appointments.

This initiative builds on Lidl’s ongoing effort
